The laughter and joy around him had shattered like glass, gentle sobs rippling slowly from the huddled mess on the side of the pathway. A torn costume and dirt stained knees had instantly caught Alastor’s attention, his curious nature taking over - he walked over with careful steps, crouching and waiting patiently. The crying turning to gentle sniffles as the boy looked up.
“Are you okay?” Alastor queried.
“I can’t find my home.” The boy sniveled, wiping his nose on his costume.
“Oh… well, come trick or treating with me! We’ll find your home that way! It’s gotta be around here!” Alastor grinned, gesturing for him to join. The boy nodded slowly, a small smile forming as they began to stroll together.

Abion let out a small shrill of excitement before Alastor noticed the off-white house they’d arrived at, the lights inside glowing from the windows, warming the atmosphere.
“Is that your home, Abi?” He looked to his new friend for a response, before racing up to the door with a grin, his comrade falling in line next to him. Alastor rapped his knuckles on the door, waiting patiently for a response; he turned to Abi, shooting him a comforting grin as the door opened. A kind woman stood on the threshold, smiling as she held out a small bowl of candy.
“Hi, Miss Abi’s mom!” Alastor beamed; he jolted as the bowl of candy fell to the floor, the sweets scattering everywhere with the action. He immediately ducked down, collecting the fallen candies. Turning only to see the woman crying, tears streaming down her face just as her son had done earlier in the night, eyes wide and unsure he glanced between the woman and her son.
“Miss Abi’s mom?” “Where did you hear that name, dear?” “F-from Abi! He’s right there.” He beamed, pointing to the boy as he had walked slowly over, holding his arms up to be held, to be greeted home, to...
“Dear… Abi passed away a while ago.”
...walk right through her.
Abion’s face fell, cries of ‘mom’ escaped his lips, gently at first but turning desperate as the woman collected the bowl, dropped a piece into the bucket and closed the door. Alastor turned to the boy, reaching a hand out and watching as it too, had gone right through him.
“But ghosts don’t exist.” He mumbled, watching his friend crumble to the ground as if he were still living.
“I exist, Alastor… I exist. Please don’t leave me.” He begged.
“I… I won’t. I promise”

Alastor sat, the ticking of the clock in his room an eternal countdown as yet another Halloween passed. A familiar sense of lingering settled around his shoulders, the weight, a comfort in the middle of the night.
“Ghosts still don’t exist…” “Of course, Alastor.” “You don’t exist.” “Why are you talking to nothing then?” Head turning over his shoulder he looked to Abion, watching as he flickered in and out of reality with soft laughter.
“Because I promised.”
