Clan: The Dark CarnivalQuest Number: OneResponse:"Well if that isn't a loaded question, I don't know what is." Viperstar said, thoughtfully. "I'm not sure I'm willing to tell you that, considering there are certain barriers in place in my mind that won't
let me wax poetic on the grisly details." His tail swished, and he glanced back at the other two cats with him. Depth Strider stepped back slightly, as he didn't really want to relay that tale either, but Luck of the Draw stepped forward with a glint in his eye.
"The worst thing I've ever done, eh?" he asked, tail held to the side, and a slight swagger in his steps. "Look, I ain't a murderer or anything like some of these bozos, but I can give ya a tale that's pretty hair-raising in its implications." He smirked lopsidedly, and lifted a paw, glancing at Viperstar for permission.
"... Go on then.
I'm not telling her mine."
Luck snorted. "Right, right, 'course you ain't. Anywhoodles." The pale cat pulled his tail under himself as he sat, and smirked again. "It was quite literally a dark and stormy night. It'd been rainin' off and on since the last afternoon, and I had a big heist that evenin', so lemme tell you I was already in one of my moods. It was like lookin' out into pea soup, all foggy and ick. My boys an' I had come a long way to the wharf. It wasn't as long as some of our trips, but we had to be in hidin' before the heist, 'r else there was gonna be big trouble with our contractor. And he wasn't the kinda person you wanted big trouble with, if'n you catch my drift." His tail pulled out, and lashed a bit.
"There we were, was just me n' my guys, and all of a sudden there's sirens blazin' out all over the place! It was a setup! So we take off runnin' like our tails were on fire! Tell you, I ain't never ran so fast before or since. One o' my guys fell by the wayside, and we had'ta stop n' get 'im, cause I ain't leavin' none of my boys behind, you see? So there we are, carryin' one o' ours, and then BAM. Right in the middle of our group, drops this big ol' attack dog! Right behind 'em is there master, and they're barkin', and I'm lit out runnin' like you ain't gonna believe! Here's where I did the big thing."
He stepped forward, tail twitching at the tip, standing straight up, and ears far forward. "That dog come runnin' at us, and ma'am, I was
gone. I left my buddy in the lurch there. Somethin' I said I'd never do, and just
booked it for the nearest pier or place t' hide. I didn't even think about my buddy 'til they were all done searchin' for us, and I didn't even go back for 'em. It was then that 'my boys' started t' think I was a bit of a jerk, and stopped takin' jobs with me. Guess that's what lead to my fall, and... yanno... eventual..." He drew his front claw across his throat.
Depth Strider winced a bit. "You left your fellow felon alone to be caught by police or... worse? How awful.."
"Yeah, well... it was him 'r me, and I ain't sittin' in no jailcell." Luck defended himself, one ear going back. "But yeah, that's the worst thing I ever did."
Quest Number: ThreeResponse:"Aaah. Jealousy. I'll take this one - if you don't mind, Leader." Depth Strider said with a forward bow of his head. "It was a flaw of mine I often dealt with. The ocean is not kind, and those who are granted serenity within it - be in from material gains, or those of emotional wealth - are often looked down upon as a means to express the frustration of not having the kind of luck required to attain them." His eyes looked down at the ground for a moment. "Such was the case with my eldest brother. As I was the middle child, I was not the favorite among the royals. That belonged to my eldest sister, but my brother had much the same outlook on life, and much the same attention was given to him over the time in which I knew him and was not relegated to military duty."
He lifted a blue paw daintily, and canted his head to one side. "One such thing he was gifted with was a companion. A mer from a rival pod, indentured rather than slain, by my parents behest that yes, my brother
was still a child, and
did still need companions and 'friends' as they put it. I would not, with clear sight back to my past, have called this poor child a 'friend' in any case - but back then my eyes were clouded to the truth, and saw only what I was taught to see. Thus, younger me saw a friend that I desperately longed to have. Swimming at every beck and call, everpresent, ready to answer questions and the like. It was something I sorely wanted - as my only 'friends' were the ones I trained with, and ours was not exactly a conventional friendship."
Viperstar nodded a bit. "So you were jealous that your older brother had someone that was always with them." he surmised. "I'd say that's pretty mean of your parents to do to you."
"Just so." Depth said with a nod. "But it was the way things were done. Acting upon that jealousy was strictly forbidden. So I bore it in silence, even as my eldest brother grew, changed, and eventually married his captive. I... am loathe to admit that I was absent for the wedding. It was churlish of me, but I did not wish to attend to view a thing that I was still... upset about, even though my adolescence had long since passed. My brother, as an adult, had a right to choose a mate that befitted his status and his desires - but that did not stop me from ruing the very notion of his happiness. Jealousy does, as they say, turn eyes to green, and greedy hearts can break otherwise sturdy walls."
"... I'm gonna pretend I understood any o' that." Luck of the Draw said, with a confused look. "And I'ma say you ain't in the wrong there. If it'd happened t' me, I woulda done the same. Only prolly kinda been mean to that mer too. 'Cause how dare, yanno?"
"... Just so." Depth stated again, glancing first at his groupmates, and then back to Hana. "It does not do my heart any gladness to know I was so cruel - but my younger self felt justified in my hatred and silence at the matter. It would not do to behave in such a manner now that I know what I now am aware of... but alas, it
did inform a great number of my decisions as a child."
