time they lost;
Everything about this week was dreadful, absolutely and disgustingly awful. Mako couldn’t stomach anymore- it’s not as if anyone would’ve stopped him from leaving the boys home- would they? After losing his parents, he was sent here, and God, did this place leave a nasty taste in his mouth.
Who gave them the right? Why did his parents leave him? Of course they had no choice. He had watched them be buried. Some days he wished he could curl up with them, often he slept out of the home at night, squeezing his thin frame between the barred windows and visiting them... talking to them. He was always found in the morning, dusty and devoid, passed out above their graves.
The headmistress hated it- in fact- he was sure everyone hated him. Whether it be his unsightly tusks, tired framework, or morose moral he was unsure, but it didn’t matter. He wasn’t welcome here- he never asked for this... he didn’t want to be here.
Mako strengthened his resolve, approaching town for the first time since it had been so violently intruded upon by those ruthless orange devils. The hungry monsters which took his parents... he winced, the earth was still charred and beaten, shops still forlorn and some nothing more than a post among rubble. He had to do this, for his parents... He couldn’t leave them without saying goodbye. It was early, of course, for without getting caught he had to leave the home at dawn.
There was someone curious out by the docks today- someone he didn’t recognize... oh well. He snuck up to the old man running produce, timidly asking if he had any flowers. The older kalon didn’t, but sent him to a smaller booth off the town square. He exchanged his meager savings for a bouquet, heading next to the stationary shop.
Again, there was the stranger... he didn’t seem harmful, though. In fact... something within Mako compelled him to approach the kalon. He let it be, wandering around the shop to find what he could afford... he bumped into the stranger. Looking up, Mako panicked and began to tear up- he hadn’t meant to bother anyone and he was so used to being yelled at...
The kalon, Charles, began to apologize, holding the younger boy close and listening to Mako even through his tears. Seemingly, Charles was a bit of a softie, and offered to stay with Mako, introduce him to the crew, give him refuge from the home and everything which plagued him here... Mako couldn’t hold on forever, could he? Charles ventured out to the graves with him, leaving the bouquet and a note which Charles had helped Mako write... and off they went, Mako was... free.
