"Oh look, a doodle, this spot must have been special to someone" might have been somewhere along the lines of what went through your head for the first couple of trees you saw odd, indiscernible little patterns of scratches on tonight, but that sort of interpretation may or may not have had a bit of room to change after you passed the dozenth or so tree covered in these weird little doodles. It's a clear and bright enough night to see that pretty much all of the trees ahead on the path have them, too.
