ambrose is an orphan who likes to refer to himself as a 'street rat', but he doesn't mind his lack of parents. in fact, he likes the ability to not worry about being watched or worried about. as long as he avoids an orphanage or foster home, he's set. he used to be cared for at an orphanage after the death of his mother and abandonment by his father, but he managed to fake his death in a fire four years ago when he was ten and has since been viewed as dead by the system. to get by, he occasionally begs and does odd jobs, and sometimes even steals. he actually loves the rush of thievery, but doesn't want to get caught, so he typically only takes snacks or a little money from gas stations. once he pickpocketed a phone and a wallet, but he felt guilty afterwards and ended up attempting to return the phone and some of the wallet's contents by claiming he found it and giving it to the police station. sometimes that event makes him wonder if he would be happier in another crime-free life, but he always banishes the thoughts and convinces himself that he's happiest this way.
ambrose is often seen as shifty and distrustworthy, which is very accurate. despite his youth, he prefers to interact with adults and has a tendency to be manipulative to get what he wants, which is normally money. his first 'business' was a lemonade stand where he sold overpriced lemonade made with cheap ingredients while claiming to use quality ingredients - he even used fake reviews! he has quickly advanced to stronger things, and has been known to sell information to dangerous kalons. he is skilled in self defense and has had to use it in the past, resulting in a few odd scars and a healthy dose of caution. the eyes on his legs and tail are just markings, of course, but he likes to pretend he can see out of them and sometimes even manages to convince himself that they're more than markings. he sometimes paints an extra eye on his forehead to appear threatening and feel stronger. he is fairly carefree and doesn't really fear death, but he enjoys deep conversations about the futility of life. unfortunately, these chats are rare due to his lack of friends or trust, especially because he refuses to open up because he's worried about the possible repercussions of sharing any secrets. he believes in a god, but doesn't worship one, and doesn't include himself in any particular religion. however, he likes to discuss philosophy. while he sometimes yearns for companionship, he doesn't want anyone to drag him down and doesn't want to deal with the downsides of friendship. he has been known to have pets occasionally, but he has never kept one long, always forcing himself to give them up because he knows he can't properly care for them. his favorite was a corn snake he dubbed maize that he ended up leaving at the door of a pet shop. he actually visited it every day until it got adopted, proving that he isn't as heartless as he tries to appear.
among anyone who he might interact with more than once, ambrose acts closed off and even hostile. he has an air of nervousness and uneasiness about him that is known to set others on edge, and he avoids speaking when unnecessary most of the time. if anybody ever calls him rose, he will go off on them - otherwise, he is known to keep a cool temper most of the time, typically to the point that he makes the opposing party uncomfortable. a couple years back, he became acquaintances with a kit named emmett, a graffiti artist that he attempted to steal from. the two ended up bonding, but ambrose ended up halting the relationship before it could grow. it was probably the closest thing he had ever gotten to friendship, and sometimes he wonders if he made the right choice. another kalon he's had multiple interactions with is bersaglio, an old kalon who owns an orchard. he started off stealing apples from her orchard, but one time she caught him and, thinking of him as a troubled youth, tried to talk to him about his problems. despite multiple attempts, she couldn't get him to open up, and eventually she started leaving him baskets of apples because she was worried about him going hungry. while he can't help but feel a little grateful to her, he still refuses to talk to her when she tries to bait him into conversation, and he only returns because her orchard is a reliable source of food.
ambrose loves astronomy and sometimes attempts to save up for a telescope, but he always ends up spending the money on something else during a bout of annoyance at himself for focusing on a hopeless dream. however, he still tries to keep up on current news about space and loves to learn more about what lies beyond the earth. when deep in thought about the universe, he tends to feel meaningless, but that isn't so bad to him - he likes not feeling important, and he's glad that he doesn't leave much of an impact on others or the world. he hopes he won't be remembered, because that suits him just fine.
