Adventure of a Lifetime kudos to whoever guesses the title correctly
The forest was never still. Life was always moving in the forest, always alive, never silent. Out of the brush came a young squirrel searching for nuts. He stood on a small rock, his little nose in the air. Suddenly his eyes caught the gleam of an acorn at the root of a mighty oak tree and he disappeared into the ferns. The undergrowth waved with the wind whispering through the tree trunks and gently rustling the protective canopy above. After a moment, the same ferns that the squirrel disappeared into rustled again, revealing the squirrel with a nut grasped in his tiny paws. His eyes were more excited now, brighter than before. He hopped down the rock and into a root hole at the base of a maple tree.
Now the forest was quiet, as if it was lying in wait for something big. The wind was the only sound, still wreathing through the forest like a snake. Faintly one could hear footsteps. Faint thumps gently pattering the leafy forest floor. Over time they grew stronger, with the occasional snap of a twig broken beneath the beast's giant foot. Then the sound became clearer - it wasn't footsteps, it was hoofsteps. The ferns waved wildly as a beautiful stallion stepped out. His mane, which reached past his chest, was gently buffeted by the wind. The wind tugged his tail in that direction too, which gently dragged on the ground. The stallion's red-blue marking atop his head was dominated by the rest of his body being white, with the exception of the point before his tail. Muscles gleamed beneath the creature's skin and flexed as he lifted his front leg to clear the rest of his body from the ferns. Bright, intelligent eyes the shade of scarlet scanned the clearing. On the beast's mighty head was a simple rope bridle, reaching over his ears and across his nose. There wasn't a bit in the stallion's mouth, for his rider had deemed him a "wild creature" and he had no need of the controlling bit. The bond between them was as strong as steel, there was no need for a bit to tell them that. The long rope reins snaked down the stallion's muscular neck and slowly looped around and stopped in the hands of a young girl. Her hair was the most remarkable thing about her; it was nearly as long as the stallion's mane. It reached down to past her hips, wavy brown locks that the wind played with. Her eyes were a gentle shade of green and blue, and there was a wildness about her that strengthened the bond between her and the stallion. Her hands were small and delicate, but they grasped the reins with such dedication to her fine steed that it was clear nothing could ever separate them.
"Come now Poderos, let us go on our ride." She whispered to the stallion, Poderos. Gently her heels touched the stallion's sides and he moved off, his head up as he walked. Together they walked, passing through glades and clearings. The girl leaned down to let her hand brush a bobbing flower as Poderos walked, and at one point they saw a deer walking in the glade. In the shade of another mighty oak tree, they stopped, the girl gently pulling back on the reins. She leaned forward and attempted to connect her hands around the stallion's neck, but was unable to reach. She patted her four-legged friend and dismounted, her boots hitting the ground with a soft thud.
Poderos looked at the girl with his intelligent scarlet eyes, then turned and began to graze. His lips made a soft smacking sound as he plucked the lush forest grass. The girl cleared a spot beside the tree and sat down, leaning against its supporting trunk. She looked to the side and saw a beautiful young flower, struggling to reach the sunlight. Gently she parted the weeds in front of it and allowed it to stretch through. Smiling, she turned to face Poderos, who was grazing still. Suddenly he lifted his head. His ears perked up and angled towards the sound. The girl watched him curiously, and came to stand beside him.
"What is it, my friend?" She asked him, struggling to find what had caught the steed's attention. His ear flicked towards her but he did not answer.
A few moments later, the girl had mounted again, and the two were off riding. She asked Poderos to trot this time, and his muscular legs ate up the ground. They stopped after a while, for the girl could see the edge of the forest and her village. She slid off of Poderos's back and sat by a rock, inspecting some tiny inchworms slowly moving their way across it. Poderos kept one ear flicked behind him as he grazed, and he did not leave the girl's side. Suddenly the undergrowth twitched. Poderos's head shot up and he stared intently at it. The girl watched too.
The undergrowth parted as a small squirrel appeared. Immediately the poor creature froze in sight of the big stallion, but he moved slowly towards the girl. She waited patiently for him to approach, gently telling Poderos that it was alright. She held out her hand on the leaf mulch as the squirrel set something in it. It was a beautiful stone, shining a clear, reflective blue. The girl inspected it for a moment but then she looked at the squirrel, gratitude in her eyes.
"Thank you, dear friend." She whispered. The squirrel continued to stare at her, and she rummaged around in the undergrowth to find a few nuts lying around. She gave them to the squirrel who scampered away. He looked back at her once, then was gone.
"Come, Poderos, it's time for us to return to the village. We have had quite an interesting day, I might say." She said, patting the big white stallion. The girl pocketed the stone, and gently clicked Poderos into a gallop. The two disappeared over a rise towards the village, and were gone.
