    @Argentsilk Hi!

    hey guys! is it a good idea to introduce new chicks to two chickens we currently have? one is a silkie rooster. we got about 8 of them back in April 2011/2012 I'm not sure which year, but since then all but two have passed away. they don't lay anymore, and we kind of just have them as pets now.
    do you think there's a safe way to introduce babies to them?

Just remember Chicks have different temperature needs. They also have a new immune system so you have to be careful and watch when you introduce any chicken into your new flock. My Silkies are from chick to 12 years old, and yes the 12 year old 'lays' 2 nests of 8 eggs a year. Depending on where you live check the local pound and let them know you are interested in adopting. Also you can put up an 'adoption' notice at your local farm feed store. Another idea is find a local 4-H club, the Poultry group chances are have 'culls' that need a good home :D

claypigeon wrote:hey! when we got our chickens they had nasty feet mites we couldn't shake. One has overcome it, but one, our friendlyier and Chubber one named Betty is still pretty tender on her legs and her scales are still uprooting.

any simple remedies? We tried feet bathing in oils and things.

I hate seeing her in pain. But I was also wondering, I'm a vegan that raises chickens and I was wondering if anyone else here raises chickens ( for fun or if their parents farm the eggs\meat) that are also against meat and animal products ? Any poultry raising vegetarians or vegans?

Those are a nightmare to get rid of.

What's worked best for me is to use a dog or cat spot on treatment on the bird. This poisons the blood which is what the mites eat and will kill them from the inside out, and usually spot on treatments last 30 days so they cover the lifespan of the mite and eggs. Those scaly mites, once they get that bad, are SO insanely stubborn. I had a hen lose a toe once due to those things. I quit messing around after that.

The scales will remain raised until the chicken molts, and they will be replaced with new scales then. Don't eat the eggs until the medication is well out of the body, you can scramble them back to the chickens if you want to, or throw them away. But its worth it for the health of the bird in my opinion.

Mites -

You have that spot on . In some breeds leg mites are treated wit a coating of Vaseline. Sadly some breeds seem more prone to leg mites, others vent lice. The big thing is you keep up with the basics of "Poultry Spa" a place that is sandy and has a bit of wood ash that a hen can dust bath in. That could be so cool if Chicken Smoothie could come up with a hollow log pet bed design that the poultry people could decorate with sand. I have even caught my dog rolling in the 'sand box' but I doubt she was doing it for mite control. :lol:

I tried vaseline. God, I tried everything. :/ Those things are the actual worst.

Feather leg chickens seem more prone to the leg mites in my experience than the clean shanked ones. I had a disabled chicken who always got feather lice though. She was missing her upper beak and couldn't take care of her feathers properly so the lice just moved right in. She was a Polish, and it drove me crazy for her entire (very long!) life. I'd kick them then the next spring, surprise, they're back!

Thanksgiving is around the corner so to speak - I'm soft hearted so I will probably make a batch corn bread just for them.

Anybody else treat their birds on Holidays?
