Eldthora stood back, squinting her eyes as she examined her work. "Alright, you're all done." She said, patting Calder's broad shoulders. The dark amber haired man nodded and rose to his feet, immediately greeted by a small, yet fierce woman. "Alva." Eldthora greeted, a happy smile on her face. The Hunting Chief, Calder, and his wife had joined the village the year before and had quickly integrated into the small group, making it feel more like a home. The High Queen looked up when she noticed a shadow looming at the entrance to her house.

Startling grey eyes stared at her from the shadows for a few moments before the owner stepped out. Eldthora relaxed when she saw that it was only Audun, Mournstead's only scout. He had joined around the same time as Calder and Alva but he hadn't mixed into the group as easily. He joined in on their conversations over dinner every night but he didn't go out of his way to help the other men fix the buildings, walkways, docks and ships. He chose to spend his time wandering across the rivers that surrounded both sides of Mournstead.

"I'm heading out on another patrol." Audun said, turning his back to the three.

"Wait." Eldthora got to her feet, brushing the dust and strands of Calder's hair. "Bjorn and I are coming with you. Until we have more scouts, I don't want you exploring without someone else. I've noticed that we have other villages nearby and I don't trust them yet." The young girl turned, picking up her animal skin bag and sliding her feet into her leather boots. Audun sighed quietly, turning his gaze upwards in a silent plea. The Hunting Chief and his wife shared an amused glance before heading towards the entrance themselves.

"Um, we're going to go on a hunting patrol then... explore some." Calder stuttered. Alva snorted, brushing flirtatiously against her husband's shoulder before moving past Audun and out the door. "B-Bye!" Calder piped before rushing after Alva. Eldthora snickered before shouldering her bag and picking up her dagger, following Audun out of the house as he left.

Audun sat on one of the rocks littered around the campfire Bjorn had just finished lighting in the center of the village. Eldthora and Alva were laughing and dancing around the fire, singing songs about heroes and villains that had been dead for many, many years. The dark red haired man reached into his bag, slipping a small book from one of the pockets. His grey gaze darted around for a moment, checking to make sure the other villagers weren't paying him any attention, before opening the book to a page that was marked with a small, pressed flower.

He ran his finger gently along a red petal, closing his eyes and breathing in deeply. As soon as his eyes closed, a young woman with black velvet hair flashed across his mind. She ran ahead of him, her beautiful laugh ringing out in the meadow filled with red flowers, the same that he had pressed and saved in his book. Just as the woman started to turn to him, her pink lips starting to part to call his name, his eyes opened and he found himself sitting once again in front of the fire, her laughter replaced with the laughter of the Mournstead villagers.

Seanni stumbled out into the courtyard surrounding her weyr. Over the course of two turns, she and her weyrmates had continued digging out the hill, which she had determined would be for staff, along with building huts for dragonriders and craftsmen. Though the hill spanned the river, there were also two bridges that they had built, one on each side of the hill. Across the river, Abesses had been building a pen for the bovine they had found.

Are you well? asked Rosanth, whose muzzle peeked out from around the corner of the hut.

"Yes, of course, my dear," Seanni muttered, walking over to her dragon and rubbing one of the head knobs. "Just tired."

How come?

"Seanni!" called Jesni from farther down the river. "C'mon! The ship sails today!"

Seanni glanced over at Jesni, who was standing on the deck of her modest fishing boat that they had bought from the nearby Paradise River Hold. While she wouldn't call it a ship, she wouldn't dispute that the purchase had significantly improved Jesni's mood. They'd make a good amount of marks if they could sell all the fish Jesni would be catching.

"Let's give the ship a good sendoff, Rosanth," said Seanni looking at her dragon.

Rosanth wondered what fighting Thread would have been like. It was the occasional fantasy she had, and she often thought of the legendary figures such as Lessa and Ramoth of Benden Weyr, who had saved Pern from ultimate disaster, or Jaxom and Ruth of Ruatha Hold, who had helped to discover AIVAS and usher in the new age. Though they had been the last to fight Thread, they had also known how to, well, fight Thread. She knew that Seanni sometimes wondered what her weyr's future would be like, as the dragon population as a whole had been on the decline, although seemed fairly stable for now. Rosanth had once proposed that dragons become explorers of the stars and Seanni had replied that a project to do just that was in progress. Perhaps Black Rock Weyr could be pioneers of this new age?

"Let's go more towards Mournstead!" called Seanni.

I can hear you perfectly fine, replied Rosanth, disgruntled that her rider had interrupted her thoughts. There was really no need to shout, as telepathy could work perfectly well. Nevertheless, she banked towards the right and a flicker of eagerness shot through her as she began the journey towards the territory.

The wind tore at Jesni's face as she navigated her small boat, The Dolphin, through the waves. She took a deep breath of the salty air and sighed with satisfaction. She had already caught a few fish, which would certainly feed the weyr for a few days at least. After turns of waiting, she finally commanded her own boat. This was certainly an occasion to celebrate. And what better way to celebrate than sailing out?

Myriam walked silently as she went on her border patrol. The previous day, Aarons story had chilled her. What if that bear came? She knew how to fight, and no doubt Aaron could too, but they were only two. A fullgrown bear would be too much. Deep in her thoughts, Myriam had failed to notice the two tall figures approaching on her right.

"Excuse me?" a gentle yet strong voice startled Myriam. She whirled around, hand dropping to the dagger at her side. She relaxed slightly when she noticed who it was, yet her hand stayed near the dagger. Elves! Myriam was a little embarrassed to have been caught by surprise, but she didn't show it and stood straight. "Who are you?" Myriam asked curiously. She would normally be more wary of strangers, but elves weren't known to be bandits, and if they had wanted to attack her they already would have done so.

"Zaos and Laedrya Faelen." The man replied calmly. Myriam looked at them, intrigued. They certainly were one strange pair. The man, Zaos, has short, curly black hair. His skin was deathly pale and he was very tall. His wife was equally as tall, but the similarities ended there. Her skin was ebony black and her hair light golden. When she looked at Myriam, the latter noticed the same unsettling red eyes as those of Aaron.

"What are you doing here?" Myriam wondered. Zaos frowned. "Wouldn't it be fair if you told us who you are first? I told you who we are, now is your turn." he snapped. Myriam was startled, and took a slight step back. He was rather aggressive... But gathering her courage, She took a step forward and stood up straighter. "You arrived on my villages territory just like that. This is my home and I do not permit you to speak to me that way." she snapped.

A flicker of doubt came up in Zaos' eyes, soon replaced by a slight look of respect. He bowed low. "pardon me, I had to test you..." he looked up, a slight smirk at the corner of his mouth. "not all humans are worthy enough to count two elves among their ranks." Myriam frowned. She really did not like his way of speaking, nor of doing things. "does that mean you wish to join me in the village?" she asked. Zaos nodded. "yes. Laedrya and me have grown tired of wandering on our own, we wish to settle down."

Myriam forced a little smile. "well thank you." she said. "Now, I suppose I should get you to the village. Follow me!" she said and started walking. As the two elves followed her, Myriam couldn't help but steal a few glimpses of the woman. She had never spoken and her fave had stayed impassive throughout the whole conversation... She definitely was once strange person, as strange as her husband.

~the next day~

When she woke, Myriam had the strange feeling this day wouldn't go well. She reluctantly got out of her bed, put her shoes on and left the house. Zaos and Laedrya were already up, but Aaron not yet. Zaos walked to Myriam. "What will we be doing?" he asked. "Well, I need to know what your strengths are first." Myriam asked. Zaos smirked. "I am a warrior." He said simply. His wife waited a second before speaking. "I work well with plants, I help them grow and know a lot of them." Miryam smiled a little at the woman. She had a very soft, gentle voice, so different from her partners. "You can be a gatherer, while you, Zaos, will be a warrior." Zaos nodded. Myriam had had to make a split second decision when appointing Zaos as a warrior and not a War Chief. In truth, she did not trust him completely...

"Oh, sorry I woke up late!" Aaron's bedraggled voice came from behind. Zaos turned and Myriam saw the obvious disgust on his face. She frowned a little. She turned her head slightly and it was then that she noticed Laedrya watching her. It was obvious the elven woman had understood why Myriam was frowning- yet, she said nothing and turned to look at Aaron. Myriam, confused and wanting to know more, turned towards Aaron as well.

"who is he exactly?" Zaos asked, bristling. "Aaron Crawford is my hunting chief. He arrived yesterday." Myriam explained. As soon as she did, she wished she hadn't, for Zaos' frown deepened. "Hunting chief? Does that mean there should be a War chief too, in your village?" he asked, his voice dangerously low. Myriam felt stuck. What could she say? She decided to go for the truth, he'd see either way. "yes. There normally is a war chief too, but we aren't enough to have one yet." she looked straight into his dark brown eyes.

Zaos was furious. His lips were a thin, white line and his eyes angry slits. He opened his mouth to talk- but was stopped by his wife's gentle hand on his arm. "it is no use getting angry over this, Zaos. You are above that." she murmured. Zaos forced himself to relax; his shoulders lowered, his hands unclenched themselves and his lips were not as thin as before. He bowed to Myriam. "excuse me, I should not have behaved this way." he said. Myriam, her eyes a little wide, nodded. "N-No problem." behind her, Aaron liked extremely confused.

"Now, Laedrya, I'd like you to go picking fruits or vegetables, and maybe find some seeds if you can. Zaos, please go on a patrol. Aaron, I'd like you to go hunting. I will ask my ancestors for some to help us." Myriam handed out the roles quickly and efficiently. It wasn't very complicated really, all had a certain thing they were good at doing. That was their role, their rank. The other three nodded, and soon all walked in different directions.

Summer is now in full swing, it has become increasingly hot these last few weeks. Crops will wither if they are not properly tended to. Prey will start to hide the day away as they try to avoid the coming heat wave. Nomads and wanderers will become more frequent as they try to settle down and escape the heat.

Since Halisi told him how she felt, Sultan started to notice how warm she was towards him instead of Ayo. She actually talks to him, always requests he goes hunting with her, and never gives him the annoyed look she gives Ayo. 'And she understands me...' When Sultan told her about how this whole village, all of it, was to protect his family and nothing more, she didn't judge. She didn't call him selfish, she didn't laugh, Halisi simply nodded and gave him respect for taking care of his family.
"This is the right decision." Sultan held the ring in his pants pocket, setting out with his spear to hunt as usual with Halisi.

As the two made their rounds through the hunting grounds, Sultan motioned for Halisi to stop for a moment.
"We don't have time to rest, we have to stalk up on more foods." She said, still moving forward. That's when Sultan grabbed her arm.
"I want to be with you." He called, clutching her wrist for a second. When she turned and stared him down, he relaxed and let go.
"Does that mean you love me back?" She questioned, almost not believing it. By her demeanor, she was obviously skeptical of his words.
As if to prove he was telling the truth, Sultan went down on one knee and grabbed the unboxed ring from his pocket. "Yes. I love you, Halisi. Will you marry me?"
Halisi's face relaxed and her eyes watered slightly; He could tell she was shaking a little too. "Yes! I will!" She told him, taking the ring and sealing their marriage with a kiss.

"The dolphins said I'm pregnant!" exclaimed Jesni to an astonished Ershar. "They really did! You know that they can tell--"

"Yes, yes," Ershar said absently, "I believe you." Pregnant? His Jesni, pregnant? He was going to be a father! He grabbed his wife by her body, picked her up, and swung her around in his joy. "I'm going to be a father!"

"And I, a mother," replied Jesni with a foolish grin.

"Our child--"

"Or children," she interjected.

"Or children," amended Ershar, "will be the most well-educated, healthy, and beautiful children on all of Pern!"

"What's this ruckus I hear?" asked Seanni from behind Jesni. The husband and wife spun around to find the goldrider holding her helmet and grinning slyly. "You're going to be a mother?"

Jesni nodded and even her surprise at seeing Seanni couldn't keep her from grinning.

"Congratulations!" Seanni looked around before huffing out a small laugh and raising her helmet as though she were giving a toast. "To Jesni and her child!"

"To Jesni and her child," replied Ershar happily, raising his hand in return. Jesni laughed and laid her head on Ershar's shoulder.

"Why do I have to carry the wherry?" complained Abesses.

"You're the Beastcrafter," said Borrin smugly.

"What does that have to do with anything?!"

The two were interrupted from continuing their argument when a voice called out: "Are you from Black Rock Weyr?"

"Yes," replied Abesses in a loud voice. Some twigs snapped and bushes rustled, and a young man with chestnut hair and dragonrider gear emerged. "Who are you?"

"Candidate Nebereg, sir," came the reply. "I'm from Southern Weyr and I hear that Seanni was granted permission to start a weyr nearby?"

Borrin liked this young man. Sharp and to the point. "Yes, you're right," he replied. "I'm Journeyman Borrin of the Farmercraft. We were just about to head back."

"Can I come with you?" asked Nebereg.

Borrin and Abesses looked at each other and shrugged. "Sure," replied Abesses. "Follow us."

"For such a small weyr, it's very well-maintained," said Renolla, the woman that Seanni was considering as headwoman, in a flat tone.

"Thank you," replied Seanni stiffly.

"Now, don't take it as offensive!" exclaimed Renolla, turning back to the weyrwoman. "It's a wonderful place! Marvelous design. I was simply surprised that with such a small weyr could devote enough time to cleaning in addition to keeping its members safe and fed."

"Well," said Seanni, cracking a smile, "we do try."

"I'll make sure that you don't have to worry about it any more," promised Renolla. "That is, if you'll be hiring me?" She cocked an eyebrow.

"Of course I am!"

in the weyr

Jesni lay in her bed, gasping for breath as ripples spread through her stomach. A dark brown hand covered her own and she turned to see Renolla's gentle expression. "When will it stop?" the fisher gasped.

"When the child is born," said Renolla softly. "You're doing well."

Jesni relaxed as the pain faded. She had been in labor for a couple of hours already, and she was now hoping that it would be over soon. She chuckled mentally; nine months of hoping for the baby to come, and now she wanted it out!

"What will you name it?"

Jesni hummed as she thought. "Ershar and I were thinking possibly Jesar for a boy, maybe Ershni for a girl. Or maybe just Eshni."

"Following the old tradition, huh?" Renolla was referring to the tradition of combining the parents' names to create a new name for the child.

"For the first."

Seanni waved at the small village--Mournstead--below before Rosanth turned without prompting. It was just as well, as they had reached the borders of Black Rock Weyr territory. She asked the gold dragon who would surely reach her full growth soon (already her head was as large as Seanni was tall) if they could go scout out Redmire. Funny; five turns into the weyr and Redmire hadn't grown very much. From the air, it didn't look as though there were even any buildings, although perhaps the Lord Holder simply had a hard time contracting builders. Well, maybe she could ask her-- No. Seanni shook her head. She needed to stop relying on her parents for anything. She wasn't Seanni of Southern Hold anymore. She was Weyrwoman Seanni of Black Rock Weyr.

Rider of gold Rosanth, the dragon added in an amused tone.

Rider of the beautiful gold Rosanth, Seanni agreed. Let's try between this time? Rosanth agreed and a moment later, transferred between. Black, blacker blackest, thought Seanni as they hung in the frigid space between here and there. And cold beyond frozen things. The two emerged from the darkness seconds later and she sighed with delight at feeling the sunlight on her skin. Rosanth chuckled, a rumble emerging that made her whole body tremble.

Weather:

Summer is now in full swing, it has become increasingly hot these last few weeks. Crops will wither if they are not properly tended to. Prey will start to hide the day away as they try to avoid the coming heat wave. Nomads and wanderers will become more frequent as they try to settle down and escape the heat.
