Then
Seanni was flabbergasted. "You have what?" she asked, for what must have been the fifth time.
"A dragon egg," said Waxinnan, a flirty man who claimed to be a Harper, with a grin. "A bone fide bronze egg."
"How do you even know it's a bronze?"
"Darlin', when you work at a weyr like me," Waxinnan drawled, "you get to know the difference between a metallic and non-metallic."
Seanni bristled. "I'm not your darling," she hissed. "I'm Weyrwoman Seanni of Black Rock Weyr."
"Woah, there, Weyrwoman," said Boldosh, a former Fishercrafter. "We don't mean no harm. See, we were just passin' through the territory, looking for some place to settle for the night. And if you have a weyr..."
Seanni grinned. "You asking to join?"
Boldosh nodded, exchanging a look of excitement with his three companions. "If you're willin' to have us."
"Of course I am!" she exclaimed. "Always. But Wax," she said with a glare, "I will never be your darling."
Waxinnan put his hands up into the air in a gesture of resignation. "Alright, alright," he said. "And we'll be giving the egg to you. Best it's placed in the care of a weyr than with one of us."
Seanni laughed. "C'mon. Rosanth could probably fit you all."
***
Nebereg knew it was time. He was wearing the traditional white clothes provided to all candidates at a Hatching Day, and was standing on the warm grounds of the weyr. They had decided to convert a small section into a hatching ground, where all abandoned or otherwise found eggs could be hatched, while weyrborn dragons would be hatched outside, where their mothers could care for them. Rosanth hummed outside, a deep sound that vibrated through the ground. As the human inhabitants held their breath, the large egg wobbled. Wobbled. Cracked. Eggshell dropped onto the ground as the hatchling inside struggled for freedom. And then...
A bronze head poked out of the shell, chirping nervously. He looked around, pausing for a moment as his gaze settled on Borrin. The farmer looked alarmed and started waving his hands and the hatchling swung his head away. Nebereg's heart started again, as it became clear that the hatchling wouldn't choose Borrin. No. The hatchling chose Nebereg.
My name's Predath, said the baby bronze dragon, looking up at Nebereg. And I'm hungry.
It was the most glorious day of N'reg's life.
***
Half a turn later, Predath was perched on top of a nearby hill, with N'reg sitting astride. Seanni and Rosanth were beside them, and N'reg was again reminded at how long it would take for Predath to reach his full growth. While he had stopped doing nothing but eating and sleeping after his fourth month, the bronze still ate every other day and was growing just as quickly.
"Is Predath ready?" asked Seanni.
Are you? asked N'reg. This was going to be their first flight together, and he could hardly wait. Supposedly, dragons and their riders used to wait until the dragon was a year old before they could fly together. Since the Final Pass, the age had steadily declined until six months for golds, bronzes, and browns, when most of them had reached a large enough size to fly with their riders while blues and greens had to wait the full year as they were smaller.
Yes, replied Predath. I'm ready to fly!
"He's ready," said N'reg out loud to Seanni, excitement clear in his voice.
"Then let's fly!" Seanni's arm dropped in the traditional signal and the dragons sprang into the air.
Now

Predath beat his wings, trying to catch up to Rosanth. The slightly older gold slowed down, privately amused at the younger bronzeβs attempts to impress her. Perhaps she would allow him to catch her for her first mating flight. She sometimes wondered what it would be like. She had heardβand seenβfrom Seanni that mating flights were chaotic yet wonderful, full of unbridled passion. And of course, she would have to pick the right mate. As there was only one other male dragon in the weyrβPredathβhe would have to be her mate unless another male came.

"It's a very well-made ship," commented Boldosh.
Jesni beamed. "Thank you!" she said. "We bought it a few turns back and it's worked wonderfully since."
Baridna peered over the sides, waving her hands at a shadowy shape below the waters. "It's so wonderfully calm out here," she said with a delighted sigh. "If it were like this all the time, I would have changed my Craft!"
Jesni and Boldosh laughed together. "Storms can be pretty nasty," said Boldosh.
"And learning which kinds of fish live around the weyr was quite the experience," added Jesni. "I must have caught a thousand (poisonous fish)! Thankfully, there are dolphins everywhere here so they showed me the best places to fish."
"They do that?" asked Baridna curiously.
Jesni nodded. "Theyβre super smart. They even know when a humanβs pregnant! Remember the stories about Mirram of the Final Pass? She found out that she was pregnant when a dolphin told her, and the dolphins have helped so many other dragonriders when they wanted to have children."
"How come?" This time it was Boldosh, who waved his hand at Jesni to continue explaining.
"Well, a short ride between is quite effective at avoiding pregnancy." This was all Jesni would say, as the topic was quite uncomfortable to speak of. So many accidents happened when a female rider didnβt realize she was pregnant and continued her duties on dragonback.
Boldosh and Baridna nodded in understanding.

"I should be back with the corn," Borrin grumbled.
"It's going to be fine," Ershar said reassuringly. "A day of gathering won't do too much."
"But what about the bovines?"
"They won't eat it. That fence of yours is secure enough."
"And," added Renolla, "none of your grumbling will help us get more food." Ershar snickered and Borrin sighed.
