Summer
Summer is here! During the summer, your villagers will likely catch even more prey and the odds of deaths during births will continue to drop.

A heatwave stretches across the land, killing most seeds that have just been planted. Farmers and gatherers alike will be disappointed, but hunters will grin as they look at how many prey animals now wander across their land after a fruitful spring. Beware of potential new enemies; it would be wise to play nice and build up reserves for the winter.

Welcome to the summer months! I hope everyone enjoyed Halloween. <3 I have a question to ask @everyone: would it be worth it if I made a spreadsheet that people could add to, tracking all known animal lineages? This would be for story purposes only so that people can create in-game breeds.

    xxxxx Kanikau lazily drifted in the open ocean allowing her hair to float freely. Her home was now an underwater cave, lua wai, underneath a bright coral, but this was surprisingly a downgrade. Kanikau’s thoughts once again focused on moku hau’oli, her happy ship that was lost. No, not lost…taken by one that she had one trusted. A small school of fish was startled by her sudden grunt. She propelled towards them not intending on catching any but chasing them nonetheless. Soon the fauna would know better than to stay in the immediate radius of her new home, otherwise she would grow lazy catching such easy meals. Instead, she swam closer to the surface, closing her eyes as the water grew warmer with each stroke and sunlight shining stronger on her eyelids. She raised one webbed hand, talons glinting in the water, and it broke the surface of the calm waters. The rest of her torso hesitated before following her hand. Immediately her thick, curly hair weighed down her head. Kanikau dunked her head back into the water long enough to wrangle most of her hair into a manageable grasp and rose once more.
    xxxxx The waters were deserted which was rare for such a nice summer day. She was sure boats would soon flock to the coral reef once more bringing divers, both experienced and novice right to her grasp. She swam to a cluster of rocks and pushed herself up onto the flattest one. Her gills uncomfortably flapped against her neck as they struggled to breathe in the above-world air without the need to filter the oxygen through saltwater. While breathing above-world air wasn’t preferred for any siren, it was possible for a short amount of time. Kanikau could now be out of the water for around five minutes continuously with the fifth minute bringing a rush of lightheadedness. It was just enough time for her navy hair and flowy slip to start to dry in the sun. She frowned and kicked at the level surface of the water. She was in the shallows, but she was used to the deeper ocean and its rough tendencies. But soon enough, the surface was calm, and she was able to see her reflection.
    xxxxx Kanikau hadn’t had a chance to properly assess her appearance since she was driven out of moku hau’oli and its many fractured mirrors. There were going to be a lot of things she would miss from her sunken ship, many long-lost human artifacts. Her face had another layer of coldness to it, accentuated by a new scar cutting across her dark skin from her left corner of her mouth to her cheek. Her cheeks were sunken in leaving her cheekbones and bright amber eyes very pronounced. She touched her fingertips to her face. She would have to stock up on food before winter came and chilled the waters. Her fingers traced the scar’s path, then down her neck to rest on her māhū pō. Well, she wasn’t sure what the technical term was, but māhū pō was what she had christened it. Her māhū pō was also the same bright amber as her eyes and it resembled a glowing stone wedged at the center of the base of her neck. Her māhū pō helped her see in dark waters as her eyes were still remarkably human. Speaking of darkness, shadows were starting to crop up at the edges of her vision, and Kanikau looked up at the sky. No clouds, but, oh!, breathing was starting to become more difficult. Her five minutes were up, and Kanikau lowered herself back into the water.
    xxxxxWater…her territory and her curse. She was only two when she was turned herself by a siren that left her abandoned in the vast expanse of open waters. Luckily, Sereia and her…no, don’t think about them! She chastised herself. What she was sulking about was never remembering any of her time as a human in the above-world. Because honestly, how far was she going to get with her legs fused together and her air endurance of five minutes? The only connection she ever truly felt to the land was exploring every abandoned room of moku hau’oli and imagining how every trinket was used. But now she couldn’t even have that! Kanikau clicked angrily to herself. Oh, Sereia was going to pay, she vowed, she’ll regret her pod ever raising me!
    xxxxxA noisy motor interrupted her small tantrum occurring underneath the waters, and she spun to see a tourist boat chopping up the water. A mischievous grin spread across Kanikau’s face allowing her sharp teeth to glint. She couldn’t take on Sereia alone and how could she resist such easy prey to turn?

    In the darker reaches of the ocean lies a gargantuan human vessel that sunk to the sea floor long, long ago. Its spacious and well-protected insides made it a temporary home to many sea creatures, but none have truly marked it as their own until the village of Sereia's foundation. Due to the dark, cozy interior, the sereians believe it to be a suitable home to live as their species has always thrived in cave-like systems. But they don't live in complete darkness as bio luminescent algae covers a good portion of the walls, ceilings, and floors - providing the ship with some light.

    Sereians have natural hair textures, colors, and skin; the rarest hair color being white.Their eyes, however, can be of any color. The scales on their tails light up when prompted and they use this ability to communicate underwater by flashing them in an array of patterns to convey speech. They can verbally communicate with one another above water, but as they almost never go there, they much prefer their way of communicating through scalespeech. Sereians often grow out their hair as long as it can cover their eyes, as hair works as a sort of shield for them whenever they need to swim to brighter locations. Their hands are webbed with sharp, black talons, and their teeth are even sharper. Able to snap forward like a goblin shark's, with rows of teeth inside, sereians aren't the kind of mermaid you'd want to make your enemy.

    Born rather than made, sereians come from eggs and hatch as seemingly normal fish - retaining that appearance throughout the first year of their life. During their second the head begins to emerge from the mouth, with tiny hands occasionally poking through the gills. As they rely on fish eyesight during this time, their eyes have yet to open and they're furiously dependent on the care of their parents or other podmates. To neglect a baby sereian so young is a punishable offense, one that will likely result in exile. As they grow into toddlers (3-5), they become exceedingly curious and playful and require constant vigilance to ensure that no harm comes their way. They're also welcome to accompany adults in watching them gather and scout from afar, but their official training starts once they turn thirteen.

    Sereians often feast on other fish, squids, and crustaceans, always in packs to yield better results. It's also a form of strengthening bonds between them, because even though they're often territorial and defensive to those outside of their pod - they're ferociously protective of those in it. A bond shared with a sereian is a bond that can last a lifetime - provided you don't do anything to strain it.

    evangeline was sitting in a chair letting, alice wrap her arm with cloth. they had found a herd of oxen not too long ago and in an attempt to shoo them off evangeline had gotten injured. after scaring them off they managed to rescue young ox who was injured. evangeline suggested that they’d keep the young animal as its use might prove to be useful in the near future.
    “and you’re done.” alice stated, standing up from her crouched position. “your arm should be fully healed after a few weeks.”
    the queen looked at her wrapped arm. “thank you so much alice.”
    alice smiled but didn’t say anything.
    there was a knock at the door. “come in!” evangeline called.
    arlo walked in nodding his head in greeting to alice. “how are you feeling?” he asked.
    “it was just a scratch.” evangeline stood up moving towards the window. “do you think you can take up border patrol today? i know you’re already busy with scouting and such.”
    “ah, no it's fine. nickolas likes having a lot of work.” arlo replied. “i’d better get going then.”
    evangeline watched him leave. alice stepped forward. “you know… we’d better get a general here soon, that way you can have someone taking care of the border patrols already.”
    the queen moved back to her chair. “i’m perfectly fine doing the patrols, i don’t like staying cooped up in this castle all the time.”
    “i know you do.” she paused. “it would just be nice to have someone in charge of that field.”
    “you’re right.” evangeline sighed. “maybe we’ll find someone soon.”
    “let’s keep our hopes up.” alice smiled.
    evangeline looked down at the forest green carpet on the ground, she had asked the gods once before for a scout and luckily arlo had arrived. perhaps it would work this time.

    anai was watching winair and jericho converse, she was sitting on the steps just outside her home counting the arrows she had. the female was using her elemental powers to blow flower petals off the bushes into jericho’s face. she glanced over at altair, the female dog was licking her paws. “come on altair… we’re going to go out.”
    the dog perked up, her tail wagging at the sound of anai’s voice claiming they were leaving. anai started heading in the direction of winair and jericho stopping near them. “hello.”
    winair stopped blowing the flowers. “hey there!”
    “what are you guys doing?”
    “just talking.” winair replied. “what are you doing?”
    “i was about to go out hunting.” anai paused. “you want to come?”
    “uhm, well jericho and i were going to go out gathering.”
    “oh! thats fine i was just curious.”
    jericho patted winair’s shoulder. “it’s fine, you can just catch up to me when you’re done.”
    “really?”
    “sure.”
    winair turned back to anai. “i can go with you now!”
    anai smiled gratefully at jericho. winair looped her arm around anai’s and began leading the girl out of town.
    “i’ve never gone hunting before!” the air elemental exclaimed, she glanced at the huntress’s bow. “do you use that?”
    “yes.” anai replied. “do you know how to use one?”
    winair pouted. “no.”
    anai laughed. “it's okay… maybe i can teach you.”
    “that would be amazing!” winair smiled.

    havensake

    A village birthed by an ancient pact between nature and man, Havensake is a land of outcasts and misfits, those that live on the fringe of society and reside in the shadows of those who live more grandiose lives. The Sanctuary may seem small and powerless given to their relative seclusion and reliance on the Gaia tree, but do not give in to first impressions; Havensake is a village that lusts for blood and is not afraid to venture into foreign lands to receive it. They are no weak fools, and they have an entire network of spirits and ghosts to back up that fact.

    Located in the midst of a sleepy meadow, Havensake’s countryside is dotted with farmland and strawberry fields, teeming with life at every corner and growing greener and greener and greener. Rain is frequent and plentiful, bringing with it poppies and azaleas in the wake of every tempest. Every so often when walking through this massive, sprawling meadow, one can hear the whispers of the dead on the wind, carrying them deeper and deeper to eventually arrive at the massive tree where the Havenists calls home.

    Yggdrasil stands tall in the heart of the territory, the direct center of the land where all of Havenist territory stems from. It is a gargantuan and powerful tree with wisteria vines hugging its middle and large, Technicolor leaves. Said to pull all worlds together into one place, Havenists believe that the many wisps and spirits that call Yggdrasil home are every dead and deceased spirit to have ever existed on Earth, and these many orbs can be seen floating about the tree everyday. Believing all people who are buried beneath the roots of this great tree to receive a wonderful afterlife, the Havenists bury both friends and foes beneath the tree, although enemies rarely get headstones. At the base of the tree, there is what Havenists like to call the ‘lower town’, merely a hub of trading activity from visitors that Havenists do not meet with aggression, as no Havenist will allow a foreigner up into the ‘upper town’. Then there's an opening in Yggdrasil, a split to reveal the tree is hallowed out and extends on into a spiral staircase. This branches out into multiple pathways and unveils a complicated network of houses and gardens and all kinds of crevices that the Havenists reside along with their spectral family, safe and secure in the source of their religion— a festive villlage wounding into the inner flesh of the tree is at work here. Where spirits only showed whispers of themselves on the net of the outside branches, they run wild within. Wisps can be seen everywhere too, their multitudes of colors often streaking the innards of the tree walls, walls already well lit under the cluster of fairy lights and the jars of fireflies that are pinned up above.

    Havenists do not like to call themselves fighters, but I inherently, they are; entire festivals are dedicated to seeking out foreign lands and executing foreigners to bury beneath Yggdrasil in an effort to give them a better afterlife. As such, Havensake tends to leave a foul taste in the mouths of other civilisations and are rarely interacted with beyond trading of goods.

    Ranks;
    The Archdruids: Two leaders elected democratically through the Reapers. One is entirely focused on the village itself, while the other is the village’s religious master. They balance eachother out and ensure no decision is too hasty.
    Newts: The two apprentices to the two leaders, trained from being elected to ascending to an Archdruid by their respective Archdruid. Here they learn all they need to lead the village in the future.
    Shaman: The healer of the village.
    The Reapers: À council of twelve, elected by the Archdruids and serving until death. The Reapers advise the Archdruids, ensure peace is being maintained, and preside trials in the case of a law being broken.
    Harbinger of War: War Chief.
    Warriors: Same as always.
    Harbinger of Knowledge: Scout Chief
    Scouts: Same as always.
    Harbinger of Food: Hunting Chief
    Hunters: Same as always.

"I-ah, do--do you want to take a ride on Siarlith with me?" stammered out Rorria, holding onto the chair. She and Fella had started dating a few sevendays ago but the relationship was so new and fragile that she was afraid of saying the wrong thing and breaking it.

Fella gave a half-grin. "Is it okay with Siarlith?"

"Yeah," Rorria said with a barked-out laugh that was amplified somewhat in the communal dining hall. In fact, the idea of a ride had been proposed by Siarlith who had said that if she--Rorria--wanted anything to happen, she and Fella needed to spend more time together. After all, the dragon had mused, that was how she had decided that Diasroth was a greedy bovine-eater and Zerith was an overgrown fire-lizard with an inflated sense of self-importance.

"Then it's alright with me."

Rorria broke into a grin and smiled even wider as Sia praised her for holding a short conversation. "Sia's outside," she said, even as the green touched down outside South Tower. "Let's go?" She held out her hand and Fella took it. Rorria once again marveled at just how smooth her girlfriend's hands were in comparison to hers; but then, she worked with leather and a dragon so of course she would have developed calluses over time.

Fella nodded and smiled slyly. "This'll be my first time up on a dragon," she said. "Benorri has been promising that we'll go up soon as part of my training, but nothing's happened yet."

Rorria smiled. "Imagine what her face is going to be when you tell her!"

Fella laughed. "I think she'll be more surprised than anything else! And probably a little worried. But I'm not planning on doing anything up there," she said reassuringly. "I just...want to see the sky like you do."

Rorria stepped closer, her heart pounding. "I...uh, hope you'll like it as much as I do."

Fella leaned in and gave Rorria a quick peck on the cheek. "I'm sure Siarlith is waiting. Let's go?"

"Yeah."

Rorria had to suppress a flash of frustration as she watched Fella clamber onto Siarlith. She was simply so slow!

Do you remember how long it took before you learned how to saddle me? asked Siarlith, turning her head towards her rider. Her eyes swirled with green and hints of orange-yellow that betrayed her irritation at Rorria. How long it took you before you learned to take me seriously?

Rorria winced as she recalled her many failures that F'dust and the other older riders had chewed her out for, from not cleaning Sia properly to attempting vaulting onto Sia when she hadn't had the years of training, flexibility, and agility that feat required. Not that she had been the only one, but it had still been humiliating. And now her own dragon was annoyed with her.

Rorria took a deep breath and then climbed up onto Sia nimbly. Fella was fiddling with the leather straps and had managed to strap herself in. Rorria sat behind Fella and put her arms around her girlfriend. "Sia's a bit rough in takeoff," she said quietly, "so you should hold onto this spike."

"Doesn't it hurt?"

"Not at all." Rorria chuckled. "You can't imagine how many times the whole weyrling class had to remind T'gin to hold on because he kept letting go to look around." She imagined that she could see Fella's smile as the other girl laughed softly. "And I'll be holding you, too. You'll be safe with us."

Fella nodded slowly. "Whenever you're ready."

Siarlith didn't need prompting. She leaped into the air, wings pumping frantically to gain height. It was easier, of course, to jump from a high position but weyrhold dragons couldn't be as picky. It was with some interest that Rorria had learned about how weyr dragons were noticeably different from weyrhold dragons; weyr dragons were typically larger and more suited for the cold but had a harder time walking whereas weyrhold dragons were the opposite. More than once, Rorria had considered apprenticing herself to a Beastcrafter in order to better learn about animal biology and adaptation but knew that she first had her dragon training to worry about.

Fella gave a small squeal as they climbed into the sky and Rorria could feel her girlfriend shaking in her arms. "It's going to be alright," she shouted over the wind. "I'm right here!"

Finally, after what seemed like forever but Rorria knew couldn't have been more than a few minutes, they leveled out over the Weyrhold. They were above the Towers and though she had never gone between knew from extensive lessons that this was typically an acceptable height.

"Look around," said Rorria loudly, giving Fella a gentle squeeze. "We're not climbing anymore."

Fella gave a tangible shiver and her head swiveled. She leaned down slightly and Rorria noticed that her knuckles were white as she held onto Sia's back spike. "It's so...beautiful," Fella breathed out. Rorria had to strain her ears to catch the words. "So dangerously beautiful. Like you."

Fella twisted in her seat and almost flung herself at Rorria. Their lips met. It was the most wonderful kiss that Rorria had ever received.

"I think you're almost ready to move on," said Benorri absentmindedly. "You'll be graduating in the turn, too."

Fella looked up from the star chart she was studying. "Really?" she asked. Her right hand, which held a pencil, started trembling slightly. "You really think so?"

"Absolutely," Benny replied. Something had changed with Fella in the past few days; she seemed more thoughtful and more focused, but also more pushy to get to the dragonrider phase which was when a Starcrafter apprentice would put their knowledge to the test. It was the moment when an apprentice would know which branch of Starcraft they would join: the theoretical branch, the Smithcrafter branch, or the dragonrider branch. Each had different talents that were required, but many students came in believing that they would go one way and end up going the other. So to see that Fella was pushing for this stage could either be seen as supreme confidence or worry. "But first, there's still several months worth of material to cover. Beginning with putting all of this--" she motioned to the star chart, "to the test."

"That would be Timing it, right?" asked Fella in a quavering voice.

Benny smiled. "Exactly." She paused. "You know? Let's start with the basics. What is Timing it?"

"It's when a dragon goes forward or backwards in time, as opposed to following the normal flow," recited Fella. "The rider needs special training on how to visualize properly because an improper visualization can lead to getting trapped in a loop or dying between."

"Correct. What is the first modern-day incident of Timing it?"

"Weyrwoman Lessa of Benden Weyr, Ninth Pass. She was a new goldrider then, and accidentally Timed it back to Ruatha twice--once to the morning Fax took over Benden Hold and once to the morning when she was Searched."

"Excellent," said Benny with a broad grin. "But were there any incidents beforehand?"

Fella blinked. "Uhh...yeah?" she said in a tone that implied a question. "If we know about time loops and that this is an innate ability of dragons, then it must have happened before."

Benny nodded. "You wouldn't believe how many apprentices seem to think that history started with Weyrwoman Lessa." Fella giggled. "Third Pass, actually, is our first known incidence of Timing it. Some Harpers revived a song from those times and someone noticed that there appeared to be an obscure reference to the practice in relation to a Healer. Likely, it had been discovered long before, possibly even as soon as the First Pass, but the practice remained secret in order to protect immature dragonriders who, for example, might think it smart to attempt "48-hour days" as we say; do twice as much work in half the time."

Fella cocked her head. "But why no--ohh because of time-stress?"

Benny grinned. "Exactly. As you already know, Timing it causes significant stress to dragons and dragonriders, due to the doubling of the bond. Non-riders don't suffer the same symptoms although some tend to be more irritable. Timing it for short periods of time doesn't appear to have any effects."

"And Timing it for short periods is okay because it lets dragonriders rescue people from natural disasters or go to places faster or--"

"Yes yes," said Benny quickly. "One branch of Starcraft, as I've already told you, works closely with dragonriders to identify and deflect any asteroids, or to plan out rescues from disasters such as fires and earthquakes in a way that maximizes the number of people saved with minimal harm to the dragon-rider pair and the passengers. Another plans expeditions to space and you may have heard that Landing Starcrafters are working with Minecraft and various Weyrs and Weyrholds to build a space-worthy craft?"

Fella made a "so-so" gesture with her hand. "Yeeaahh but I haven't heard the details. Does Black Rock do any work with them?"

Benny grimaced. "We're too new to have anything worth contributing for now. However, we have enough on our own lands to care for, with all the new peoples showing up on and inside our borders. We may end up with a branch of Starcraft here theorizing what's causing this phenomenon and of course the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader already work closely with the leaders of these Holds and cotholds to ensure they're protected and have enough resources to survive and grow."

Fella nodded. "Sooo...about Timing. What do I need to learn?"

"I hear that you're doing your Timing practical?" queried Ze'ku as he fixed the straps around Hosurth. Is that tight enough? he asked.

Hosurth turned to look at the saddle and shook his body. The straps hardly shifted. Yes, responded the blue. What are we doing?

"Yes!" responded Fella eagerly. "I'm going to practice making visuals based on star charts for both the day and night, future and past."

"Woah woah," said Ze'ku, raising a hand to halt the stream of words. To him, she seemed nonsensical. Day and night, future and past what? "Can you repeat that, but slower?"

Fella huffed. Teenagers were so moody. "I really want to work in disaster relief," she said, "so I need to take the Timing practical."

"All Starcrafters take it," interrupted Journeyman Bennori, "unless they fear heights or between in which case they're barred from certain branches."

Fella rolled her eyes. "Yeah yeah so that means I'm given four dates and times. Two times are during the day, and two are during the night. And one date is in the past and one is in the future. I needed to create a star chart for each date and time, construct a visual for each one, and then I'm going to pass it to Hosurth. The way Benny--uh, Journeyman Bennori explained it is that I confirm with Hosurth who confirms with you who confirms with me, and if Hosurth can go to the date-time, then I pass but if he can't, then I fail."

Ze'ku nodded. He remembered between training with Weyrleader N'reg and how he and his classmates had learned to construct visuals and confirm them with each other. It was a grueling process and he imagined that Fella had been through a similar, if slightly lighter, training regimen. "Alright. Do you know how to mount a dragon?"

"Yup!" Fella replied happily. "I-ah..." She fell silent and Ze'ku wondered who she had ridden with before. Certainly not him, and it was unlikely to be Sedah, Soyah, or F'dust because of their schedules. Perhaps one of the weyrlings? He shrugged internally. She knew and he could help her if she needed any.

"Up you go, then." He turned to Bennori. "Are you coming with?"

Bennori dipped her head. "Someone has to keep her in line, right?" Her eyes darted to Fella and her lips twitched with what was likely amusement. Ze'ku snorted and Fella rolled her eyes.

"Then you'll be behind Fella," said Ze'ku, "and I'll be sitting behind both of you. The saddle is specifically designed for up to four people."

"Can your dragon..." Fella trailed off.

"Hosurth," Ze'ku prompted.

"Hosurth," continued Fella, "carry that many people?"

Tell them I can carry as many people as I want, came Hosurth's cross reply. And that they should hurry up if we want to get in the air before nightfall.

Ze'ku smiled. "Absolutely," he said. "And let's get going."

Getting the two Starcrafters onto the dragon proved to be no trouble. Fella was clumsy but she had clearly been on a dragon before. Suddenly, he remembered that she had been picked up by a dragonrider, possibly him if memory served. But she had also been on a dragon far more recently than that. He'd speak to F'dust later about whether the weyrlings should be carrying passengers at this point in their training. Yes, their dragons were physically mature but many of the people weren't. They had to be more careful.

Hosurth sprang into the air and pumped his wings to rise into the warm summer air. They reached cruising altitude after a few moments and began circling the North Tower, waiting for Fella's input. Finally, an image came. It was an intricately detailed image of the North Tower at night from an odd angle. After a moment, he realized that Fella meant to come out perpendicular to the ground, to better see the position of the stars.     Season: Summer
    Weather: The summer has grown hot even during the nights.

    Announcement: If I made a mistake please don't be afraid to pm me! Hunters are happy with all the prey around, however gatherers will notice that seeds are struggling as the heat rises. Growing crops will even be a tad tough as the heat sucks out moisture.

Summer is here! During the summer, your villagers will likely catch even more prey and the odds of deaths during births will continue to drop.

Welcome to the summer months! I hope everyone enjoyed Halloween. <3 I have a question to ask @everyone: would it be worth it if I made a spreadsheet that people could add to, tracking all known animal lineages? This would be for story purposes only so that people can create in-game breeds.
