(I'd like to change this dog's gender to male, since they haven't been bred yet, so I wrote this using masculine pronouns!)
With a name like his, many expect Meteor to be a force of destruction. The truth is a little less straightforward.
Meteor is a dog, after all, and a physically powerful one at that. He loves nothing more than launching himself off docks and out of hay lofts just to experience that brief, precious moment of weightlessness. (Yes, he leaves craters when he lands. No, his owners aren't amused by it.) On the rare occasion he can't jump, he runs, and he's knocked more than his fair share of people head over heels with his need for speed. Worst of all, sometimes he combines the two, taking great running leaps over cow catchers or roads that usually end with him eating dirt.
Needless to say, Meteor's a frequent flier at the vet clinic closest to the farm.
But beneath the energy and the clumsiness, it's abundantly clear Meteor cares. His show name, 'Wandering Star', comes from his long-standing habit of checking in on his humans. Any time they're out of sight for too long, he'll find an excuse to slink away and check in on them. A quick sniff, maybe a pat on the head, and he's satisfied. Then he can go back to whatever task he interrupted. Cram enough people together, and he ends up 'wandering', patrolling from one end of the farm to the other making sure everyone's safe and accounted for.
It's a habit almost as endearing as it is frustrating. It's also saved lives.
Raven Ridge Stables is situated in the high desert. Summers are hot, dry, and above all else busy. There are foals to halter-train, mares to re-breed, first cut alfalfa to harvest, and the list goes on. Locals are accustomed to all of this. They don hats and cooling vests, chug water like it's going out of style, and nap during the hottest part of the day. Smart out-of-towners adjust quickly. More stubborn ones... well, they're the ones that Meteor checks in on the most. They're the ones he noses towards water troughs or stock ponds. They're the ones he herds into shade. They're the ones he jumps on until they listen to their bodies and stop hefting hay bales in 110* heat.
And if they ignore all of his warnings? They're the ones he ends up rallying the troops to rescue.
Meteor may be a menace to kneecaps everywhere, but when he comes charging into the stable barking like a dog possessed, everyone comes running. If their Wandering Star has stopped wandering, it's for a darn good reason.
(Let us all hope and pray he never figures out how to misuse this ability, shall we?)
