Submissions: Pica and the squirrel. [618 words]

Pica was just minding her own business daydreaming and nibbling at the autumn grass, when out of the corner of her eye she saw a a slight movement under the old oak tree at the end of the field. Curious, and always a lover of nature, she trotted over for a better look at what was scurrying around. When she got closer she saw a bushy little tail bobbing through the beautiful golden fallen leaves. She'd never seen this strange fluffy creature before, as this was her first year at New Wave and back where she was from they did not have squirrels. She stood and watched it go about its business, until it practically ran into Pica's hoof. At this point the fluff ball looked up, her eyes went wide and with a squeak she turned tail and sprinted up the oak tree to a branch well out of Pica's reach.

Pica noticed the poor thing had dropped an acorn as she scarpered so she nickered softly and picked up the acorn gently between her teeth. She slowly walked over to the tree where the bright eyed creature was sat on its hind legs shaking in fear. She tried to be friendly in the best way she knew, so she blew gently out her nose ruffling the little thing's fur. Then she placed the acorn in a nook in the tree trunk and stood and gazed at this wonderful little thing. The squirrel watched her nervously then took a tentative step towards the acorn. Pica didn't move a muscle and this clearly gave the squirrel courage. It scarpered down, snatched the acorn and then retreated to a safe reach. After several long minutes of watching each other intently Pica wondered what she could do to gain the little creatures trust.

Suddenly she had an idea! She bent her head down and started nosing clumsily through the leaves on the ground until she came across another acorn. She repeated her actions from earlier and gently placed the acorn on the tree for the squirrel. This time it bobbed its bushy tail and bounded over to sit within reaching distance of Pica. She kept searching until she had collected a grand total of 7 acorns for the little thing, and as she placed the last one down for it, she slowly reached her nose out to the squirrel. And lo and behold her kind deeds had won over the delicate little animal, and it gently touched her nose to nose.

Over the following few weeks Pica would regularly go visit her fluffy companion, though only when she was alone, as she did not want loads of the others coming to scare it off (well also she secretly didn't want to share her adorable discovery). The squirrel showed Pica where she stored her food in the tree trunk, and also showed her the little hole where she planned to sleep through the winter. As the days grew shorter and the air colder Pica noticed the squirrel spent more and more time in her little hibernation hole. Then one day when all the acorns had long since been stored away, and the morning chill nipped at Pica's ears, she came to the old oak to see her fluffy friend deep asleep. She nickered softly a goodnight wish to the curled up ball of fluff, and went back to the cold crisp grass. She was sad to say goodbye to her friend, unsure when they'd see each other again, but soon she was back to dreaming of where her next adventure would take her. And her collection of bits and bobs now had a new addition - a perfectly round shiny little acorn.
