011. though no longer a follower of the christian faith, she grew up in a strict evangelical christian
household with a track record of never missing a sunday service. her parents have always had a str
ong religious zeal coupled with a devotion to personal virtue and a contempt for anything secular.
she and her younger sister were in biblically based education since youth, attending the private c
hristian school trinity academy in the capital. it wasn't until she moved out of her childhood home
and began her undergraduate academic pursuits at the washington institute of technology that she
had the freedom to explore her identity. she and her sister annika both faltered in their religious p
ractice during their college years although it wasn't until her sister met her now-husband that she r
econverted to christianity. as emilie fully drifted out of religion later in life, her sister annika ende
d up wading in deeper. though her sister was the first person to know she left religion behind, now
adays she is less supportive and a lot more hell-bent on converting her whenever she does decide t
o show her face in the capital. granted, emilie has tried throwing her sister a bone by doing things
like suggesting to go to church with her only because it might get her off her back, but most of the

011. at a young age, kat and her brother lukas became orphaned. after their parents perished in p
ursuit of renegades who abandoned their cause they had little choice but to rely on the cult for sup
port. cultists in the mother and daughter circles preyed on them during their time of grievance and
loss, manipulating the siblings to carry out gruesome deeds and turning them against each other in
the process. influential high council members exploited their insecurities and grievances to put a w
edge in their relationship. by the age of ten, kat had her initiation ceremony, a practice reserved f
or those born into the gang and thus considered the ‘purest’ of their followers. a sacred rite of pass
age between youth and maturity, she received her first set of tattoos on her right arm during the sk
in stitching ritual that night. during the sacrifice, the high council prophesized her to become the s
ervant circle's next sasteshi priestess, an honorable position tasked with carrying out the bloodiest
of rituals known to the black scriptures. lukas was enraged. having studied the practice of sastesh
under his late mother and other priests in the group for the entirety of his adolescence, it's no won
der he felt slighted. the high council, having known this, purposefully named kat in his place under
the pretense of the will of zaohr, a sure-fire way to destroy the bond between the two siblings. jus
t as they expected, lukas deemed his sister undeserving of the title, regardless of the fact zaohr ap
pointed her to the position through his human vessel and the leader of the gang, ward. a few years
later he was written off as a common servitor to the draelyn prince during his own initiation cerem
ony, adding extra salt to the wound. kat came to think of him as jealous, unhappy, and downright i
nsubordinate. he failed to show her the proper respect that came with her position and by the time
he was seventeen, he was continually acting peculiar, coming across as closed off, withdrawn, and
guarded. his resentment for kat sparked his doubt in the cult's leadership, and having been continu
ally cast aside by the other members of the gang, he was long beginning to quietly rebel against his
belief system. after years of showing disregard for the principles of their cult, the high council final
ly had reason to eliminate lukas from their ranks in order to seize kat's complete and utter dedicati
on to the cause. without the knowledge of the rest of the gang, they decided to take disciplinary a
ction against her brother, sentencing him to be a part of the gang's next sastesh rite, offered in att
empt at expiation and in punishment for his suspected heresy. before that night, she would receive
her second sastesh tattoo on her opposite wrist, an encircling black band marking a three year peri
od of leading the ritual. unbeknownst to her, she would soon become her brother's executioner. ap
pproximately in the year 2426 lukas died during the somber nocturnal ceremony, followed by a gra
nd feast intended to establish communion with the draelyn prince. that same night kat impulsively
fled zaohr's sanctum and shrine, a manageable task given how each of the gang's members were in
a hallucinogenic state during the sastesh. 012. seeing how disposable her brother's life was and jus
t how powerless she was in having to take his life away, kat had no choice but to face the reality a
bout the life she's led thus far. the severe punishment meted out to her brother for breaking the ru
les was her 'i never thought this would happen to me' moment, no matter how bad of terms they w
ere on prior to his death. the loss of her brother made her realize the rules the cult enforced were
arbitrary and stacked against their own members, however this revelation also dismantled her who
le life at its core that night. 013. after finding refuge at the closest town, kat would go on to spen-

ltural shock she would experience from entering the general wastelander population, le
aving the cult and abandoning her old lifestyle on a whim. living isolated from the rest o
f society made everything outside of zaohr's sanctum an unfamiliar way of life to her. in
the cult her identity was developed for her without much choice, forcing her to take in
commitments based on the ideals of the groups leadership without having a chance to e
xplore alternatives, and as such she has only ever known beliefs that should be accepte
d without question. once the security blanket of her assumed identity was removed fro
m her, she spiraled into an intense identity crisis. kat didn't know what to do without b
eing able to rely on the norms, rules, and expectations to which she had become so acc
ustomed throughout her life. she did not integrate into the traditional wastelander cult
ure easily. the differences between her previous life and her new one became increasin
gly apparent, and high anxiety levels led her to grow disconnected from her environmen
t. what eagerness she had to leave the cult quickly turned into unpleasant feelings of f
rustration and anger as she continued to experience a number of unfavorable events wi
th other people that she perceived as strange or offensive due to the way she was raised
according to the black scriptures. she felt she had no true place in the outside world bec
ause she was met with difficulty at every possible turn. as a result of struggling to adjust
to her new lifestyle, she became someone prone to bouts of hostility, irritability, anger,
impulsivity, and withdrawal. kat got stuck on the past and wanted to return even despi
te it all. she almost cracked too, thinking that returning to the bringers of salvation wo
uld be the only way out of the psychosomatic and psychological consequences of her de
parture from the cult. she had to learn the hard way what is and what is not considered
acceptable by the general populace, as well as how she ought to conduct herself. for a
long time she found it impossible to accept wastelander tradition and culture, but in th
e end she had no choice but to manage if she wanted to survive in the outside world.
