Free-to-Use Character Creation Guide/Shell - Posting welcome

Postby The Great ME! » Mon Nov 18, 2013 10:11 pm

UGH, IT’S FINALLY DONE. HELL TO THE YES. I’VE BEEN SLAVING OVER THIS THING FOR LIKE A WEEK STRAIGHT TRYING TO MAKE IT PERFECT AND INCLUDE EVERY DETAIL POSSIBLE KNOWN TO GENERAL CHARACTER CREATION I COULD THINK OF SO HOPE YA’LL ENJOY AND FIND IT USEFUL. PEACE OUT.
(No, but seriously, this is like 20 pages long of writing and character creation tips and I-don’t-even-know how many hours of my life, like holy crap)

I’ve seen a lot of “Roleplay Guides” around the forums but never one specifically for a character creation shell for a person to just copy, paste, and fill out anywhere that was free to use, so I decided to make one that others can use since creating a good character sheet can be a real hassle sometimes. Many people don’t want to make one beyond basic info. Others just don’t know how to make a good, detailed character sheet. Others create roleplays and allow others to submit their own form for various reasons.

Some people like to keep it simple, but I like to get down to all the nitty-gritty little detailing and cover all my bases to really make my characters come alive and be diverse.

This doesn’t have to be used towards just roleplay either. I find when trying to create characters for stories or just create a bio for a drawn character, it can be useful. I tried to be incredibly thorough and cover just about everything that could go into character development, but if you think of one that’s not up already, feel free to suggest it.

I also color-coded it by section of related character creation categories(and tried to make them "visible" colors not too hard on the eyes, much easier said than done, I started running out of colors!), to make it a bit easier, or so went the intention anyway. I’ll also post some examples in the following posts. Really this is most meant just as an easy-to-use guide of what to take into consideration when creating characters, even those things you either didn’t think about or didn’t want to before, as well as provide some examples of what makes or breaks a good character, going off of common mistakes and amateur ideas of what “makes a character loveable” that I’ve seen around a lot.

For further character-development help, as far as common or overused character tropes, Do’s-and-Don’t’s, and what works(or doesn’t) for character and world-building in general, I find myself favoring Springhole.net
It’s got some really awesome guides and advice, I highly suggest it.
One such very simple Springhole Guide that can help you to create characters that WORK can be found here:
Character Creation and Development Theory(Or, How to Make Characters 101!)

Note: I mainly made this with humans in mind, but feel free to modify for animals or unique creatures/aliens/whatever as you see fit. This is merely to give you a starting point and guide to work with for developing your characters. Change it up for yourselves as much as you’d like when you actually use it. You can use it off-site anywhere else if you want to as well, totally fine with me(not like people won’t do it if I said they couldn’t use it off-site anyway).

Note2: Some sections(such as "addictions") might be considered innappropriate to fill out on Chicken Smoothie if you have characters with particular habits or histories, but I've included them in case you want to use this form on OTHER websites which allow it. If you are unsure about whether or not it is a section you should or are allowed to fill out, you can read Tess' rules on it here: Roleplay Rules for ALL Human/Humanoid Roleplays. If you are still unsure, you may want to ask a staff member. Better safe than sorry ;)

Note3: Don't fret if this form looks really long and scary to fill out. Believe me, I know more than most anyone that it's a tedious form to fill out. Those who want to make it shorter and only fill out the sections they want to are fully free to. The full form in it's entirety is only for those that are REALLY serious to the umth degree about their character creation, but I wanted to make sure I gave sections that might appeal to any and everyone.

Say
"it's all you can take"
Better take some more

Cuz I know what it's like to test faith
Had my shoulders pressed with that weight
Stood up strong in spite of that hate

Night gets darkest right before dawn
What don't kill you makes you more strong
And I been waiting for it so long

General/Base Information:

Birth Name: (The name they were legally given at birth by their parents)

Name Origin: (Why was the name chosen? Where did it come from? Does it have a country of origin? What does it mean? Or was it made up out of the blue and means absolutely nothing? Repeat for name changes, nicknames, and alias’ if they are applicable)

Current Name: (Have they always kept the same name? Did their name change? If so, what did it change to? Nicknames don’t count as a name change.)

Name Change Reasons: (Why did they change their actual, legal name?)

Nickname: (An alternate name that they are sometimes, or prefer to be called. This can be a shortened version of their already existing name(“Sam” instead of “Samantha”) or a different name entirely unrelated to theirs, but that fits them or they are commonly called)

Alias: (NOT to be mistaken as a “Nickname”. A false name given to protect ones identity, such as when a person gives a fake name when arrested, or a detective working a case gives a fake name and pretends to be someone else when trying to find out information)

Birth Date: (What day, month, and year was your character born?)
True Age: (How old is your character?)

Appeared Age: (Does your character look their age? Do they look older than they are? Younger than they are? How much older/younger do they look? What makes them look older or younger than they are?)

Horoscope: (What celestial zodiac sign does your character belong to?)

Chinese Zodiac: (What is your character’s Chinese zodiac animal for year? What is their secondary zodiac animal, for month?)

Actual Gender: (Was your character born a girl? Born a boy? Born a hermaphrodite?)

Appeared Gender: (Does your character look their gender? Are they a girl who looks like a girl, or a girl who looks like a boy? Are they a boy who looks like a boy, or a boy who looks like a girl? Are they very gender-neutral in appearance?)

Desired Gender: (Is your character content with their gender? Would they rather be the opposite gender? Is it just an idle thought, or have they actually tried to dress like or become the opposite gender?)

Race: (What race is your character? Note: “White”, “Black”, “Tan” are NOT Races, they’re “skin colors”. Norwegian, Swedish, German, Finnish, Polish, French, Irish, Scottish, Swiss, et cetera would be an example of “White” races. African, African-American, Egyptian, et cetera may be examples of “Black” races. “Tan” races could be a long list of things – Mexican, Pacific Islander, Arabic, Indian, Vietnamese, Native American, et cetera may be “Tan”(depending, some are lighter or darker in every race).
Sub-Race: (This might be a secondary or later-developed race such as a Werewolf or Vampire, while Race would be their race of origin or location such as African, Chinese, Caucasion, et cetera. Likewise, if you have a shapeshifting creature with multiple forms, the main race might be something such as a dragon, while the "sub-race" or secondary race/species might be human, if they take on a human form)

Heritage/Ethnicity: (Specific family/bloodlines and race history and where your character’s ancestors came from or were at. This includes social and monetary status as well.)

Nationality: (What country is your character legally a citizen of?)

Physical Appearance:

Image: (Optional, but some people like an image. Still, it’s best to know how to describe your character, not JUST use an image. So don’t get lazy, make sure you fill out the other sections too.)

Skin Tone: (This can range anywhere from “Albino”/really pale/pasty all the way to skin that legitimately is “black”, or somewhere in-between like ashen(kind-of-grey tinted skin, like when deprived of too much sun), sunkissed(very barely tanned), to mocha, to semi-dark. Whatever suits your fancy.)

Natural Hair Color: (Pretty self-explanatory. If going for realism, people are born with any shades or variations of black, sometimes gray, brown, blond, red/orange/ginger, and platinum/white. If you don’t care about realism…well then, go wild.)

Unnatural Hair Color: (Has your character changed their hair color? Dyed it? What did they change it to?(can be anything, really))

Hair Length: (Long? Short? Medium? BALD?)

Hair Style: (Strait? Curls? Loose? Tied up in a ponytail? Tied up in a braid? BALD with nothing to style?)

Natural Eye Color: (In realism, eyes would be any shade or variation of brown/hazel, green, or blue in humans. If you don’t care about realism, then just go wild!(just please, for the love of whatever diety you worship, steer clear of the rainbow eyes. Not nearly as attractive as you might think. Blek. It’s really just an eye-sore(aaaah, see what I did there?))

Contact Eye Color: (Does your character wear colored contacts?)

Eye Shape: (Everyone’s eyes have a distinctive shape. Wide, narrow, slanted, long and narrow, small, large, almond-shaped, marble-shaped, y’know, just whatever)

Head/Face Shape: (Does your character have a bit of a chubby, rounded face? An angular face? Something in-between?)

Body Frame: (Does your character have small features and narrow hips and shoulders? Do they have broad, thick hip and shoulder bones? Petite, or beefy?(not necessarily meaning ‘fat’, mind you))

Height: (How tall is your character?(inches or centimeters))

Weight: (How heavy are they?(pounds or kilograms) Overweight? Underweight? Perfect weight? This BMI calculator can give you a general idea of what’s realistic, just input the height and weight you chose and modify as you see fit: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/obe ... micalc.htm )

Muscle Mass: (Is your character athletic and muscular? Or are they lazy and flabby? Keep in mind, a character who loafs on the couch eating Bon-Bons and potato chips all day, every day isn’t going to be a skinny, muscular super-model and athlete, they have to actually get up, eat healthy, and work out!)

Skin Condition: (Probably something not often thought of, or that people don’t want to think of. Is your character kind of scuzzy? Do they have baby-soft skin? Maybe they have kind of rough skin? Maybe it’s broken out from hormones? Who knows o3o )

Hygeine: (How clean does your character keep themselves or how much attention to they give to their cleanliness and health? Directly coensides with skin condition)

Scars: (Does your character have any sort of scars from past injuries? It could be small and unnoticeable, or it could be huge and glaring, maybe something that your character is even ashamed of…or maybe they brag about it and show it off.)

Tattoos: (Any purdiful tatt’s to show off? What is it of? Where is it located? Is there any sort of special meaning behind the tattoo? Does it symbolize something or mean anything?)

Clothing Type:

Piercings: (Earrings, gauges, snakebites, brow piercings, belly button piercings, tongue piercings, et cetera?)

Worn Accessories: (Anything that’s just an addition to the main clothing(besides piercings), such as necklaces, scarves, hats, glasses, monocles, belts, bracelets, arm socks/sleeves, bandanas, et cetera)

Preferred Tops: (Anything they like to wear that is worn on the top half of the body around the chest, everything from bikinis to tank tops, to long-sleeves and turtlenecks, to army vests or big chest-plate armor. Or, heck, maybe nothing at all.)

Hated Tops: (Anything they DON’T like to wear that is worn on the top half of the body around the chest, everything from bikinis to tank tops, to long-sleeves and turtlenecks, to army vests or big chest-plate armor. Or, heck, maybe nothing at all.

Preferred Bottoms: (Anything they like to wear that is worn on the lower half of the body around the legs/groin, everything from bikinis to skimpy skirts, to shorts and jeans and khakis, to army pants or chainmail greaves. Or, heck, maybe nothing at all(Hide the children!).)

Hated Bottoms: (Anything they DON’T like to wear that is worn on the lower half of the body around the legs/groin, everything from bikinis to skimpy skirts, to shorts and jeans and khakis, to army pants or chainmail greaves. Or, heck, maybe nothing at all.)

Preferred Shoes: (Any sort of foot-wear that the character likes to wear, from moccasins and socks, sandals and flip-flops, 1-inch heels to stilettos, to tennis and skateboard shoes, to sports cleaves or combat boots, maybe even armor-plated shoes. Or perhaps barefoot.)

Hated Shoes: (Any sort of foot-wear that the character DOESN’T like to wear, from moccasins and socks, sandals and flip-flops, 1-inch heels to stilettos, to tennis and skateboard shoes, to sports cleaves or combat boots, maybe even armor-plated shoes. Or perhaps barefoot.)

Wherever they're from, they've picked up an accent, or basically verbal quirks and manner of speaking, of the area they live, even if they don't realize it! Reputation: (Are they *generally* well-liked and respected? Or do others hate them and talk ill of them?(This is how most OTHER characters perceive yours, not how your characters perceive themselves. And don’t assume EVERYONE will like them. Everyone has enemies. Even God’s and Angel’s – whether you believe in them or not - have enemies, so why wouldn’t your character have them? So avoid putting down “Everyone loves him/her”.) Why do others feel this way about them? Have they earned this reputation and image? How have they earned it?)

Group’s Morality: (Are they good? Bad? Does your character’s group think of them as good or bad? Why?)

Reputation with the Ally: (What is your character’s reputation amongst their allied group? Are they respected despite being from different alliances? Does the enemy group hate them? Are they allies out of actual like and respect for each other, or are they only allies out of temporary necessity, with very fragile loyalties? Why?)

Enemies: (Meaning rival or enemy GROUPS only(personal enemies and rivals will be in a different spot).)

Group’s Morality: (Are they good? Bad? Does your character’s group think of them as good or bad? Why?)

Reputation with the Enemy: (What is your character’s reputation amongst their enemy group? Are they respected despite being from different alliances? Does the enemy group hate them? Why?)

Legal Record:

Criminal Charges: (What sort of crimes have they been caught and convicted of, if any? How serious are they? Is it just something minor and stupid, like stealing a pack of gum that got them a warning? Guilt-by-association? More serious crimes? Accessory to crime? Car theft? Armed robbery? Maybe they’re so bad as to have been charged with murder?)

Overall Health History: (Were they quite healthy and rarely got sick? Do they still rarely get sick? Did they catch colds a lot? Maybe they had something a lot more serious than a head-cold. Perhaps they got a serious infection in the past? Maybe they battled cancer and won? Maybe they were just chronically ill, with no explanation as to what caused it? Maybe they suffered mental or emotional disorders that affected their physical health as well? Or just mental and emotional problems in general, not necessarily limited to physical)

Effects: (How significantly do their drinking habits affect other areas of their life? Has it gotten in the way of relationships(such as caused a breakup), or other adverse effects? Have they had health problems because of it, such as alcohol poisoning? Has it caused them any legal issues, such as drunk driving charges or accidents? Maybe fatal accidents? How has it affected them? Do they become violent when drunk? Happy and bubbly? Maybe even premiscuous?)

Drugs?: (Has your character taken any other kinds of drugs(perscribed medications only count if they're abused or taken more than perscribed, otherwise don't count them. Properly used medications and perscriptions go under Medical Record>Treatments)? What drugs do they use?)

Powers:

Overview: (If any; what are these special powers? What do they do? How to they enhance the character?)

Population Frequency: (How many others might this power occur in? Just your character? An entire race or species? Only in certain individuals, depending on certain factors?(age, gender, color, et cetera))

Ability’s Reputation: (How are your character’s powers viewed? As a good thing, or a bad thing? Why? Does your character have the same feelings as others about their powers?)

Skills and Talents:

[i]Note: Not all "talents" or "skills" have to be something like art, music, or sports. Here's an extensive list of possible talents, and it's not limited to ONLY these things either: http://www.michaelhartzell.com/Blog/bid ... u-May-Have
Natural Talents: (“Talents” doesn’t mean a character automatically knows how to do something. A “Talented” artist doesn’t just pick up a pencil at the age of two and draw Leonardo Da Vinci’s works perfectly in a few days. Talent just means it’s easier for them to learn over time without as much guidance. Talents can also be undiscovered by the character, but still exist.)

Learned Skills: (Can overlap with Talents, but doesn’t have to. Any skill that a character has worked at trying to be good at, and knows how to do.)

Hobbies: (Things that the character may enjoy doing on the side, but doesn’t necessarily always focus on it, or plans on making it into a career or taking it seriously. Basically, casual skills, like doodling for fun, or sewing just because it relieves stress)

Forever Failed Skills: (Anything the character isn’t good at, or can’t do, no matter how hard they try. Everyone has something they can't do.)

Checks and Balances:

Greatest Strengths: (Your character’s BEST, BEST traits. Traits that are probably obvious to everyone else. It can be anything; skills, appearances, intelligence, reputation, health, whatever! Just try not to go overboard, try to be reasonable and realize when enough good traits is enough. Your character has awesome traits, it doesn’t mean they’re “Perfect”)

Greatest Weaknesses: (The downfalls of your character, those things that no one wants to have, but that doesn’t mean they don’t(Anyone who tries to take this part out or say their character has no flaws or weaknesses is going to get slapped by a slimy, smelly week-old squiddy(lol)). Some traits may be easily visible to others, some are more hidden away. It can be anything; skills, appearances, intelligence, reputation, fears, health, whatever! Try and balance it out about-evenly with good traits.)

Personality Development:

Personality: (How does your character behave, think, and feel? What are their positive personality traits? What are their negative ones? How do they react to others? To being alone? Do they act differently in public than in private? Do they act differently on the surface than how they feel inside? Are they honest? Or liars? Why do they have the personality and beliefs that they do?)

Fears: (What are they afraid of? Are these fears minor, or serious/phobic? How do they respond to these fears? For example: an arachniphobe. Do they get a little edgy, and go get a shoe to squish the spider with? Or do they scream, hyperventilate, and demand someone else squish it for them because they’re too scared to get close to it? Are they SO fearful that they take extreme measures to prevent experiencing these fears? Are they on medication for some of their phobias? Are they seeking special treatment to get over their phobias? Have they had a huge impact on how they live their lives, or how they function in the real world?)

Sexual Orientation: (Heterosexual/straight? Gay? Lesbian? Bi? Pansexual? Asexual/Abstinent? Etc)

Relationship Interests: (What is your character looking for in a relationship? Committed, loving, life-long relationship with a loyal, nice guy? A risky bad-boy who’s into all kinds of “interesting” things, and living on the wild-side, but maybe not incredibly loyal? Uncommitted, “open” relationships? One-night stands?)

Type Turn-On’s: (What types of people, physical or personality-wise, is your character attracted to or prefers? Why?)

Type Turn-Off’s: (What types of people, physical or personality-wise, is your character really NOT attracted to(on an exclusively romantic level)? Why?)

Social Standing: (What type of person is your character, socially? Are they that really popular person surrounded by tons of friends and partiers? Are they semi-liked and have a good number of friends, but maybe not SUPER-popular? Are they very exclusive, and don’t have many, but very good friends? Maybe they’re a loner, and don’t like others?

Friend Interests: (What type of people does your character like to hang around? Outdoorsy, sports-type people? Cheerleaders? Book-worms? Scene/Emo/Goth type of kids? Gangsters? Nobody? Etc. Why?)

Social Dislikes: (What types of people does your character really NOT like to be associated with? Why?)

Religion: (What is their religion/what god’s do they worship, if any?)

Faith: (How strongly do they believe in their religion? Are they simply spiritual? Are they an extremist? A skeptic? Did they choose their religion, or was it chosen for them? Do they simply claim their religion to be “one with the crowd”? Are they simply following a religion because it’s their parent’s religion, or societally expected, but they don’t want to be a part of it?

Absolute Loves: (No, I don’t mean people. I mean their absolute, favorite things that they love to do excessively, be around, think about, and learn about. Such as someone might be obsessively into horses, or perhaps into fixing up cars and tinkering with technology.)

Likes: (What are the things they enjoy, or look forward to, or favor over other things, but more casually than their most-loved things? Why do they like these things?)

Favorite Foods: (What do they enjoy eating most, perhaps even to the point of obsession or excitement when they think about it?)

Favorite Media: (Do they enjoy television? Music? Video games? Or exclusively board games, books, or real life stuff? What, out of those media(types/genres of shows, movies, music, video games or consoles, etc.) do they like? Why?)

Favorite Activities: (Anything they like to do. It could be sitting at home, playing on the computer, or going outside and hiking, or going swimming, or going to the mall to hang out with friends, etc. Why?)

Absolute Hates: (Anything they can’t stand more than ANYTHING else. Maybe they really, really hate loud noises, or perhaps they can’t stand children, or they get irritated by disorder and uncleanliness, or bad/reckless drivers, or the color pink, etc)

Dislikes: (What are the things that annoy or anger them, but not as much as their Absolute Hates? What do they try to avoid, or show disgust towards? Why do they hate these things?)

Hated Foods: (What sort of foods can they not stand? That disgust them or that they just don’t particularly like the taste of?)

Disliked Media: (Do they hate television? Music? Video games? Do they not like books, or tabletop board games, or other real-life activities? What, out of those media(types/genres of shows, movies, music, video games or consoles, etc.) do they dislike? Why?)

Disliked Activities: (What sort of activities or events do they NOT like to participate in? Why?)

Immediate Family/Relatives Relationships:

Parents: (Birth parents only; Do they know their parents? Both of them? Only their mother? Only their father? Who are they, and what are their names? Are their parents married? Divorced? Separated? Are both their parents alive? Does your character like or dislike them? (Try not to put “Unknown” for either one if it can be avoided(especially/at least with major characters, though minor/background/"Only-seen-once" characters without major roles you could probably get away with excluding it), even if deceased or not around, or not talked about, as it usually only shows laziness in character development. A character STILL had a mother or father, even if they aren’t mentioned or unknown to the character. They STILL exist(ed).))

Year of the Rooster
Neat, organized, alert, perfectionist, scientific, responsible.
Can be critical, egotistical, rough, opinionated.

When it rains it pours
When the floodgates open
Brace your shores

That pressure don't care when it breaks your doors
Say
"it's all you can take"
Better take some more

Cuz I know what it's like to test faith
Had my shoulders pressed with that weight
Stood up strong in spite of that hate

Night gets darkest right before dawn
What don't kill you makes you more strong
And I been waiting for it so long

Year of the Rooster
Neat, organized, alert, perfectionist, scientific, responsible.
Can be critical, egotistical, rough, opinionated.

When it rains it pours
When the floodgates open
Brace your shores

That pressure don't care when it breaks your doors
Say
"it's all you can take"
Better take some more

Cuz I know what it's like to test faith
Had my shoulders pressed with that weight
Stood up strong in spite of that hate

Night gets darkest right before dawn
What don't kill you makes you more strong
And I been waiting for it so long

Frequently Asked Questions:

Note: If you ask a staff member something SPECIFICALLY about this guide and recieve an answer, please PM it to me or quote it as a reply to this thread so I can add it to the FAQ. That way, you can easily see if it's already been asked/answered and the staff don't have to waste their time answering something which has already been asked and answered, especially since they might have to waste their time reading through the whole guide to provide an answer to begin with. It will save everyone, including maybe you, some time and effort. Thank you~

Can I make a character for your examples to post up? :o
Most certainly! ^^ Just make sure they follow CS' rules of remaining appropriate for younger viewers.
