it seems almost ridiculous at first, that someone like chase would be working at a rehabilitation centre. at first glance, he seems almost resentful, judgemental, broody and antisocial. he is not the biggest fan of people, which perhaps is the reason he came into animal husbandry to begin with, but even so, the way he carries himself and presents to strangers is... strange. especially with the knowledge that, for those who know him well, he has a big heart. he carries many burdens of those around him, but is hardly the type to show any kind of pain, emotional or physical. his work comes from the heart, but to observers it seems logistical, the way he thinks through every action, almost mechanical in his precision. be it the cleaning of enclosures, training of animals, he is sharp and unwavering, intimidating when he is in his element, which is clearly with the animals, training and caring for them. he is a perfectionist and will not stop until everything is spotless - sometimes this can hold him back. it is obvious he enjoys his work, though. to any visitor, friend or relative, he openly brags about how great his job is, how fulfilling. though lost animals, accidental or intended, hit him like a brick, and he often retreats into himself when this happens, disconnecting from everyone around him, lest they see his pain for weakness.

but he has many flaws - like anyone else, he is immensely flawed, and though he tries not to bare his 'weaknesses' to others, it is obvious to anyone good at reading people. he has many habits derived from stress and a tough past, his most obvious being smoking, a vice he cannot shake, lest he become restless and irritable, though he will push aside this need for his work. bottling up his problems in order to focus on his work does him no good. he tells no one, diving deeper into his work, taking on longer shifts, sleeping less. eventually it overwhelms him, and when he breaks, it is no good for anyone, least of all himself. it seems like he isn't aware of it himself, but others are. his mother calls often, as he lives away from home, so that she can ensure his wellness. as for the rest of his family, perhaps they do not care, or perhaps chase just doesn't mention them. either way, he says very little about himself to others, preferring to focus on those around him, learning about their lives and sharing in their happiness.

sometimes, another side comes out of him. his smiles are radiant as much as they are rare, and when joy shines in his eyes, it is a pleasure to witness. behind all of his walls, there is a kind boy, desperate to break out - but these times are gone just as quick as they arrive, and it is as if he is shaken up by showing the most personal, sacred parts of himself. anger bubbles, sadness wells, and he is gone. will someone change that?

it's not that chase doesn't like sawyer, but he isn't sure how to handle the boundless energy the man seems to have. being a little introverted himself, and easily worn out by people who are so positive, he's honestly kept his distance so far, working closely with his own team but trying his best to stay out of his hair.

chase could really make a friend in london. something about the man's personality just seems to click with him - perhaps it's his kind and caring nature, how he is always looking out for those around him, but chase can really appreciate it. he can see that london is a hard worker and, strangely, wants to make the man smile, be part of the reason he enjoys coming to work. despite being older than him, he can respect and even admire what he's made of himself. perhaps he hasn't seen london's moments of rage, or maybe he can just overlook them and pretend they don't exist.
