to them, the fog was a source of life. it camouflaged their slender, white pelts. it provided shelter from the evils around them. for centuries they lived and evolved in the thick, white mist. over time, their eyes changed from the usual gold or brown, to something more suited to their environment. a light, mist gray. it is unusual, indeed, but those eyes help them see through the fog like no other animal in the forest. ever since that first mist-eyed pup was born, they not only survived, but thrived. food was abundant, and they liked to keep it that way. within the last decade, however, things have been different. new scents have popped up all over the forests. in the tribe's mind, the evils have arrived. new wolves, native to foreign lands. they were not accustomed to the fog. their coats stood out like smoke in the fog. they came in all shapes and colors, even their eyes were different. the tribe had been so used to their secluded paradise, that they had not been afraid of the strange-looking newcomers until it was too late. the nursery, full of pups born just the other night, had been attacked. no pup survived. the mist-eyed tribe wolves were frazzled by this. their camp had been well hidden, even the tribe members sometimes couldn't find it. but these new wolves.. they had something different, and it confused the tribe members something horrible. that incident was five years ago. ever since then, the fog has been fading, and younger tribe members have been disappearing, only to later be found dead and half-eaten. but it was the next dead wolf who really sent the tribe in a frenzy. the alpha. he'd gone out with a small patrol of three or four wolves, seeking to find a leader of the newcomers. only one wolf returned to camp alive, seriously injured. "shadows!" he said, "they are fast, oh so fast! they are shadows." but he was too injured for even the medic to heal. he died shortly after returning to camp.
now, the beta has taken over, and unlike his predecessor, he is afraid, and
questioning as to whether the tribe will be able to talk their way out of war.
