In the past there were four Clans- Wind, River, Thunder, and Shadow. Today they are spoken of in legend. Stories of great cats who lived in those Clans are still told to kits in the nursery.
Over time cats had split off from the four great Clans and went off on their own. Just a few here and there, usually cats with more of a free spirit. Occasionally these warriors decided to start their own Clans in a range of places. Two identical twin sisters of WindClan left one day long after the rein of Onestar, both with separate motivations. One sister, Rainspot, sought leadership and the other, Whitecloud, sought freedom, neither of which were available to the twins in WindClan. They traveled long and far together when one day they came to a dump. They had been to dumps in the past; they made great places to rest as food (be it mice or birds) was abundant. But this one was different. There was strange slush everywhere. When the sisters tasted it, it was foul. There was no water so it was their only choice of drink. The twins decided not to stay long in this place; there was something...toxic about it. They soon found that the animals who lived at the dump were odd as well, often sporting strange mutations. Frightened, the sisters left. Many moons later when they finally discovered a pleasant place to live, Rainspot and Whitecloud began developing oddities. Rainspot found she could move water at will, hear from far, far away, and that her claws had become harder and sharper. Whitecloud developed the ability to call small prey animals to her and move extremely quick.
The sisters settled down in their new place- a beautiful forested area near a wide lake- and eventually Rainspot suggested they form a Clan. After all, she'd always wanted to be a leader. Whitecloud said she would help her sister only if she promised to allow her to be deputy, and that they work together to make the rules. Neither sister had especially cared for some of the policies back in WindClan. It was agreed and the two began searching for cats to fill their new Clan. They also started to develop their new rules. It was soon discovered that the two sisters had rather different views on how they wanted to run the new Clan and they soon were constantly bickering. The strays and housecasts they had recruited were led back and forth, one way then the other. Whitecloud's rules or Rainspots? Eventually, when the Clan had enough cats to support it, Whitecloud rounded up a few of her supporters in the dead of night and departed. She led them away from the lake, to a more open area that reminded her of the home they had so long ago left. Whitecloud declared her and the cats who followed her a separate Clan from Rainspot's. She began calling herself Whitestar and set up her own rules. In turn, Rainspot took the name Rainstar and developed her Clan to her standards. The two sister Clans grew and prospered.
Eventually both of the she-cats found mates and had kits. Their kittens proved to have similar mutations as they did and then some they did not. For instance, several of Whitestar's children had two tails. A handful of Rainstar's had fur that, when bristled, was sharp as a porcupine's quills. From then on you could tell a cat was descended from the two leaders if they had strange mutations or powers.
Rainstar's Clan by the lake became known as "RockyClan" in respect to the rocky beach of the lake close to camp. Whitestar's Clan was named "CloudClan" because, while they lived on the outskirts of the forest, most of their territory was a wide field open to the sky.
Now we are many generations into the future, when both Clans are well-off. Over time their resentment for eachother has fluctuated, rising and falling. Currently the two are particularly angry at eachother after a group of RockyClan cats bullied a CloudClan apprentice into swimming across the stream that separates the two Clans. The apprentice drowned.
