they spoke about it in the news as an event that was sensationalized; it wouldn't happen,
pokemon were already so ingrained in society that losing them made no sense. then the
threat became more severe, more plausible. scientists noted a drop in the pokemon, an
d trainers began to see even less of them on their journeys. as promised, this continued
to happen until the numbers severely dwindled, no longer able to be excused by any hoax
or over-exaggeration. this is what led to the experiments that broke the natural order.

scientists were tasked with changing nature. pokemon were disappearing, removed from
a society that had built itself on the created codependency. they took the genetic materia
ls of pokemon in order to form the new ones - modified to withstand the world and benef
it society more than their origin ever could. by the time that the science had caught up t
o nature, most of the natural pokemon had vanished, leaving only traces of their genetic
material through the simulacrum creatures that now roamed society.

when the pokemon are no longer wanted, they are left behind.
the wilds, now primarily empty of the original pokemon, were
the perfect dumping grounds for 'defective' or unwanted creat
ures. although frowned upon, there were always ways to circu
mvent the systems to release them. however, this had disastr
ous effects on the natural world, what was left, as the origin
pokemon fought against the modified, stronger version to att
empt to keep the land. in the end, reports showed that the su
bjects caught were often modified in some aspect, leaving ne
arly no remaining origin pokemon to be found in the wilds, eit
her hidden or dead by this point. the released, genetically alte
red pokemon, stronger than the origin pokemon, began to shi
ft to the wilds to survive further, and each iteration of them b
ecame more feral and strong as time continued. the tall grass
was now, truly, full of dangerous wild pokemon with a hard bite.

they created a new system of management for the aggressive pokemon.
ECLIPSE (eradication and compliance leveling, internal pokemon security)
, who took on the task of dealing with dangerous and violent wild poke-
mon outside of the cities. this was by any means necessary, whether tha
t be completely removing the pokemon from living or forcing compliance
via other means. students were given various options for fields, ranging
from the elite ECLIPSE members to the regular, common trainer. as outc
ry against the dangerous pokemon began to rise, so did the rate of mem
bership of the ECLIPSE group. now known as one of the most important
groups of society, the ECLIPSE have various ways to receive new modifi
ed pokemon for their own journeys, and are often seen with the best.

the more traditional style sees youngsters going out to become trainers
or coordinators. the battles are tougher, the trials all the harder. there
are far more dangers in the world now, and getting a partner isn't the f
reebie that it used to be. scrap pokemon, also known as the 'defective'
pokemon, are typically given to these trainers.

“… and lately, the school board’s seen a lack of… enthusiasm from the students about just what they’re planning to do in life, and so they devised a new plan this year for helping them figure out what exactly they want to do. I don’t really get how this is supposed to help, but, well, I’m just a teacher, so.” He closes the book on the desk before stepping over to tap the display board, where a slideshow pops up abruptly. With a sigh, the teacher begins to drone on, droll.

“So, they’re calling it the ARC program. Stands for ‘Assuming Responsibility with Confidence’, as in – yeah, your chosen job.” The slides continue to click on and on, seemingly endless and full of more information than would be cared about. The teacher certainly didn’t seem to care. “Basically, each class is given specific locations and ‘jobs’ that they have to complete at these places. You’ll be accompanied by a chaperone who is certified in taking care of you guys and any Pokemon that may show up, but the job will rely on you guys working together as a group. This kind of stuff will range from the odd job here and there to full on specialty jobs in which a specialist will be there to show you the ropes. This is in hopes that in your last year here, you’ll get some idea of what you want to do.”

The slide stops moving, and the teacher moves back behind the desk, a muttered, “probably”, being overheard in the silence. So much for faith.

“So, figuring that this starts tomorrow, I already have your first assignment here and ready. Please be sure to pass the papers on, only take one copy each. This details what, exactly, you guys are going to be doing and where you’re going. Remember, headcount gets taken every day, so no ditching or someone will assume you’re dead.” He passes a stack of papers to the student closest to him, but otherwise pays it no heed.

“To summarize, everyone in this class will be headed to—” there’s a pause as he looks down at the paper, himself, apparently not entirely memorized on the details. “—to Terravain Forest. Apparently there’s been a slight inconvenience in the typical main road, so they’re asking for some help in getting it cleared up to resume the usual route-happenings.” Boring.

He sighs once more, waves his hand in a gesture towards the class. “For the rest of the class period, make sure to figure out what exactly is the best way to combat this with your peers. Keep discussions on topic, and no leaving class early. Tonight, make sure you get everything packed up for tomorrow that’s on the back of this list.” And with that, the teacher pulled out his Pokegear, proceeding to go about his own business as students began to shuffle around in the classroom.

XXXMabel sat in her desk, thwacking her pencil against the open page of her notebook, but listening intently to the teacher's explanation of the new ARC program. If the school board was worried about the student's enthusiasm for life, she wondered if they knew about this teacher's own enthusiasm for their program. His lackluster delivery and disinterested tone seemed to amplify the monotony of this school day. Mabel stole a few glances to others in the room, wondering if they shared her thoughts. If the teacher that instructs the students had doubts, it seemed inevitable, to her, that the students would harbor skepticism as well.
XXXNevertheless, Mabel listened while the teacher explained the slideshow, taking many notes the entire time, and wouldn't outwardly complain. The prospect of exploring different jobs and locations really intrigued her adventurous spirit. However, she couldn't quite hide the annoyed expression on her face. Mabel let out a quiet sigh to regain her composure and put a smile back on her face. This guy wouldn't stop her own excitement for whatever may come from this ARC program. She took the stack of papers, grabbed her own copy, and passed it to the person behind her. Her determination to make the most of the situation remained unwavering.
XXXHer mind buzzed with a mixture of excitement and a little apprehension as the teacher continued to drone on about the assignment. Thoughts of the upcoming journey to Terravain Forest fueled her optimism and her imagination at what's to come. Mabel couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to this program than the teacher let on, and she was determined as ever to uncover its hidden potential.
