indent<3Rather than the marvellous ceremony that many trainees envision when tasked to leave the walls this affair was one with a much more solemn atmosphere. There weren’t any balloons, or confetti – no loved ones were allowed to wave goodbye.There was no glory bestowed upon those who leave, no-no, glory was only given to those who return. If they even return at all. The chance of all of them surviving this assignment was slim, far slimmer than anyone cared to admit. But that hardly mattered. The most important thing was to complete the mission, at any cost. That’s what they were trained to do.

indent<3Tomoaki let his mind wander, hardly paying attention to the brief that was being given to the team. The commander that was giving the brief couldn’t have made it any more boring; droning on and on about the honour that came with being a soldier, as well as the sort of monstrosities that they should expect to face outside the walls. All the trainees – now technically soldiers – already knew this spiel from their days in training, but none had the authority to interrupt.

indent<3“Now then,” the commander paused her pacing, stopping to stand in front of the soldiers. She was one of the few instructors who were tasked with training new recruits, making her a somewhat familiar face to those who stood before her. Tomoaki couldn’t be bothered to remember her name, though, only recognizing her as the drill sergeant who was in charge whenever they were in the barracks. “You have all been briefed on what the goal of this mission is, but allow me to clarify the finer details.

indent<3“Working together as the Elpida Unit all of you will travel northward towards the coastal area that was once Imabetsu. From there you will travel through the underwater Seikan Tunnel to cross over to Hokkaido, where you will then set up a temporary checkpoint so that the Matatabi Corps can work to set up a more permanent base of operations at a later date. Each of you have already been equipped with supply bags. Each one contains basic survival tools like a compass, a firestarter, a map, and a flashlight: as well as a long-distance walkie talkie, a radio to contact home-base to alert them of your progress, and provisions that should last you until you reach Hokkaido. There are plenty of towns along the way, though, so scavenging for extra supplies is encouraged. With all that being said, it’s about time for you to set off. Goodluck out there, soldiers.”

indent<3The commander gave the squad one last salute, the behemoth gates behind her opening perfectly in time with her gesture. Mimicking her salute, as was expected of them, Tomoaki began the march out into the desolate streets, watching his teammates do the same. Whereas the city within the walls was relatively well-maintained, the same could not be said for the outer structures. All around them were crumbling buildings, each one having some form of greenery growing between the bricks. Store signs were hanging limply from their posts, shards of glass from broken windows littered the streets -- It was surreal to think that once upon a time this place was once a bustling street where people could spend their afternoons shopping.

indent<3Behind them the gates closed with a loud ’clunk!’, the reality of it all finally setting in. Tomoaki was really out here in the wastelands with a group of people he hardly knew, and he was just supposed to, what? To trust them with his life? He only really knew these people from their months in training together, but he hardly knew them. Tomoaki let out a heavy sigh, running a hand through his hair with slight annoyance. As much as he would love to walk off and disappear to fend for himself, he knew that -- even with his skills -- he couldn’t possibly hope to survive on his own out here.

indent<3It was a shame, really, but what could he do? He might as well accept it for what it is and move on. Letting the thought sink to the back of his mind Tomoaki gave his teammates a quick look over, scoffing at the sight. It wasn’t malicious, rather it was a sort of short-lived laugh at what he saw; everyone here was memorable for one reason or another, and it raised some questions in Tomoaki. Could that have been why this group of people were assembled as a unit? Because they were all a bunch of oddities?

indent<3Ah well, it didn’t really matter anyways. Tomoaki knew at least a few of their names and that was good enough for him.

indent<3Not interested in starting a conversation, Tomaki continued walking at a steady pace; keeping mindful of his surroundings in case of any threats. There shouldn’t be, though, since the daily patrols are quick to dispatch any anomalies that wander too close to the walls. But once they get a bit further out... Well, anything could happen then. For now they’ve got a grace period of sorts, and Tomoaki intends to enjoy it in silence for as long as he can.
