It has been nearly a century and a half since the first werewolves came to settle on the shores of Harvest Lake. Nestled in a remote mountain valley and enshrouded by rich pine woods, it seemed a perfect place for their kind. In fact, there were several packs who came to stake their claim to this wealthy land, carving out territories for themselves alongside the lake. For many years, they fought one another ferociously, but eventually terms were settled upon. Six packs used to roam these woods, marking the edges of their territories with splashes of dye on the trunks of trees.

But things changed. The six who had once established themselves slowly began to dwindle. First it was the Yellow Eyes, plagued by sickness and finished off by a hard winter. Then it was the Blue Lake, their territory slowly constricted to nothing as they struggled to stand up to their neighbors. Then the Green Bough, killed off by infighting that tore them in two. After them, the White Peak, who left for a new home after years of human tourists encroaching on their camp.

Then there were two: Red Pine, nestled on the northeast shores, and Black Sky, positioned across from them on the southwest side. And then, about a year and a half ago, there was one. The Red Pine pack, following the way of the White Peak, packed up and left in search of a new place to settle, hoping to leave only one thing behind for the Black Sky - a peaceful life.

But it was not to last. The Red Pine pack has returned, and they have changed. Their leadership is new, and their mentality seems to have done a complete 180. They've reclaimed their old camp and pushed their borders as far up against the Black Sky pack as they can, forcing the other pack into suddenly having to fight once more. The onslaught remains relentless, akin to an all-out war between the two factions, the likes of which have not been seen in the valley in a great many years. A question looms large over the heads of every pack member: is there only room for one?

Since their exodus over a year and half ago, many things have changed for the Red Pine pack. A difficult journey harried them, and they failed to find a new permanent settlement within the expected amount of time. The pack soon began running low on prepared supplies, in addition to having picked up several outsiders, and were left scrounging at many points. A general sentiment of anger at their leadership arose, with the majority now either questioning or outright disagreeing with the decision to leave. Eventually, the former leader of the Red Pine pack was deposed by force, the new leader ousting the council members and appointing new ones favorable to himself. Some pack members fled, but most stayed, ready and wanting to return to their homeland. The pack has now been resettled for about a month, fixing up their former camp and staking their territory as close to the Black Sky's as possible.

The Black Sky pack currently faces a crisis worse than they have in many people's lifetimes. The results of the Red Pine's failed migration have proven to be about as bad for their neighbors as imaginable. In the absence of any other established packs, the Black Sky relenting on guarding their lands and shifted most of their focus to having hunters to cover their new, larger territory. They have not had designated 'patrollers' nor a captain since shortly after the Red Pine left - until, that is, very recently, when they have suddenly had a need for them again. Unease is palpable among the pack members, who are unsure of how to confront the abrupt aggression from another pack. Many fear the Red Pine means to destroy them entirely, whereas others are willing to accept it is only temporary. However, tensions remain incredibly high even within their own ranks.

    𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐒 𝐂𝐋𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓
🐺 malered pine leaderlocation: red pine camptags: --
    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
A pair of seething eyes - one dark brown and one a murky, marble-like blue - scanned the cluster of cabins that sat huddled together near the northeast shore of Harvest Lake. Paris was sitting on the porch of his lodge, a relatively small shelter positioned at the very edge of the camp. It had been about a month since they'd finally arrived here, back at this place so many of them had called home. For Paris, it had been the first time he'd ever seen the place. More than a year and six months of disrepair in the rural woods had laid it low, leaving all the buildings fairly battered, but it was much better than being on the run all the time. The land around it was rich, relatively secluded, all but a perfect place for their kind. Their previous leader was a fool to have left it behind - what did he stand to gain? Some misguided sense of moral pleasure for deferring to his neighbors? To make a martyr of himself and his entire pack?

It didn't matter anymore. His folly had caught up to him. Paris did not carry any such sense of purposeless honor. He watched his pack silently; it was late in the morning and many of them had woken up already, with the usual patrol sent out at the first sight of dawn. The Black Sky seemed to be deliberately trying to avoid letting their patrols encounter Red Pine's, possibly because Paris' patrollers had orders to attack them on sight wherever it was feasible. Red Pine's hunters had been working harder than usual as well, since winter was fast approaching and they had very little time to stock up reserves before the season of scarcity descended upon them. They were hard workers, though; Paris admired the dedication and determination of this pack he had claimed for himself. They had seen how inhospitable the outside world was, and it had steeled their determination. For Paris, that determination had come as soon as he'd heard the strange pack speak of their homeland. They had almost all remembered it fondly, stirring Paris immediately to formulate an idea. An opportunity so good it felt untrue.

But all too attainable - as proven by the fact that they were here now, and Paris was with them, at the helm of their journey. Magnificent. However, he couldn't spend all day sitting around rolling the idea over in his head. Paris rose to his feet, in one swift, sleek motion, stepping out from the shaded porch of the lodge and down into the light underneath the gray sky. A cold breeze skidded over the forest floor, ruffling the boughs of the dark trees that encircled the camp. They were near the shores of the lake, a single pier jutting out over its surface from the outermost edge of the camp.

Paris cut a strong silhouette; his outfits were typically all black, much more elegant than the average. The generally rustic lifestyle of a werewolf pack was not something he had previously sought out, and there were many things he already missed about being able to move freely on his own, including among humans. His previous way of life had distinctly made him an outsider among the Red Pine Pack at first, though he had done everything in his power to demonstrate that such was a misconception. He was not an intruder, a usurper, he was a leader who had united a pack and saved them from suffering.

Paris strode languidly through the center of the camp, not heading anywhere in particular, just silently surveying. This hour was a fairly calm, neutral time of day, but it was still important he keep his finger pressed to the pulse of his pack. That was where his predecessor had failed, and where he was most determined to succeed.

    ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
It was a cool, crisp morning - warm for the season, even, although it was not likely to get much warmer even as the day went on. Adam's fleece-lined leather jacket was a little warm, even unzipped. The sky above was like a vast, silvery ocean, a sheet of pale clouds covering the sun and sky with a foreboding totality. It was the kind of weather that welcomed snow, although the heavy snows had not quite fallen upon the valley just yet. A few taunting flurries here and there, but not the kind of snow which piled up into stoic banks and weighed down the boughs of the evergreen trees that blanketed the hills. It was always a difficult season - not only was prey scarce, but the snow often coated the roads and it could take a long time for these rural backroads to be cleared, and even then they remained icy and treacherous. Voyages into town for supplies they couldn't get naturally took twice as long and were sometimes not even feasible. To top it off, it wasn't uncommon for their camps to lose power during snowstorms, which could remain out for days at a time this far out in the hills. They could survive, though; they were a hardy bunch.

The Black Sky camp was not pushed up to the very edge of the lake as some of the other packs' had been, but looking out through the trees, it was not hard to glimpse its flat surface, a flat dull blue reflecting the gray expanse of the sky. And beyond that the placid stretch of the lake, a backdrop of misty blue-green mountains, and thin wisps of smoke rising from the camp across the lake. It had been a little over a month, but it still felt strange to see signs of life over there. Unreal, almost, like the opposite shore was another world he was merely viewing through a veil. Staring across the water was a habit Adam had developed, something which distracted him from his work, and all it served to do was make him uneasy. Supposedly right now he was cutting wood - a fairly tedious task, usually reserved for trainees or off-duty medics, but Adam was feeling restless. He needed something to occupy his mind, to keep his muscles moving.

Adam tore his gaze away, trying to forget about the threat that lingered on the other side of the lake, always waiting, closing in like a bear trap, trying to slowly suffocate his pack out of their own territory. A sharp crack cut the relatively quiet air as he split a readied round of wood, with swift and precise efficiency. A bit cathartic. Adam couldn't be on patrol at all times; he didn't have the ultimate say in regards to the schedules, anyway - that was deferred mostly to Anastasia, under Dokja's guidance of course. The enemy's patrols were quite hostile and intrusive, and Adam's patrollers had suffered plenty of wounds in the weeks since they'd had to hastily re-form their ranks. If it were up to him, he would be pushing back against them much harder, fighting fire with fire.

The axe splintered the half-round fiercely, leaving a gouge in the tree stump beneath it. A noise like a growl came from the back of Adam's throat at the effort. Alright, that was enough. They had plenty of wood for now, and the action was now serving only to rile him up. He took a deep breath, shaking off the growl of his wolf in the back of his head, and threw the last few splints of wood onto the woodpile, resting the sharpened axe against the wall of the cabin. He would do better to find something more placid to do, perhaps.

The average height and slender beauty of a female hummed as she looked around. They were back home, finally back home. This made the redhead happy, and she played with her hair. The brown ends, part of the reason behind her name, stood out. Forest green eyes of the creamy skinned one glanced to their alpha. She was wearing a green shirt and tan pants today.

She'd rather be in a skirt and blouse...but that wasn't always practical. Humming quietly, she continued to watch their alpha. She was waiting for some sort of signal from him. She then realized she should probably set out to patrol. Shaking her head, she turned away. Turning into the red, brown, and white form, she looked towards the lake a moment. Shaking her head, she began to walk. Not that she'd say it, but Black Sky wasn't really a threat; Red Pine were the ones pushing at them.

Harui Ruko- m- 24 y- Black Sky hunter- homo; Logan and alpha but...who knows how that would go- SO open- would have to adopt- Koto x Hana: older siblings, litter-mates, younger siblings; aunts and uncles, cousins- Tags: open

The sweet and gentle but stubborn and hard headed pretty Japanese male was up that day. Brown eyes gazed around a moment. The black haired one then shook his head. He brushed at straight hair just past the shoulders. He fixed his part, since he had that instead of bangs. Now that he was all neat and such, he felt ready to go out. He quickly dressed in a blue shirt and some pants. It was autumn, so it wasn't exactly always the warmest of course, so he had a flannel as well.

It was a blue crop top, actually, so the flannel would probably come in handy. He headed out, taking note of one of his pack mates (Adam). He seemed to be chopping wood. The hunter didn't think he should bother him, so he moved on. He figured maybe he should go hunting, as he was a hunter. He didn't know what any of the others were doing, not seeing them yet. He turned into the pretty, smaller and slender wolf. The white toed, black furred golden eyed wolf then took off.

    𝐌𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐎𝐑𝐘 𝐂𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐘
23 , she/her , red pine hunter , loc; red pine camp , mentions; paris , tags; hazel
The season of autumn had always been one of Mal’s most favourite times of the year. By the time November rolled around, the air thickened, and Earth’s breath was chilly, but it was refreshing. She liked how she didn’t feel like she was going to melt to the forest floor within three seconds of stepping outside, yet wasn’t shivering to the bone within that same amount of time. She also liked that there wasn’t a lot of rain this time around; back home, it never seemed to stop. Home. The Red Pine pack was her home, really. Mal found comfort in the pack within days of settling in, even though she and her parents knew they weren’t exactly warmly welcomed when they first arrived. She had Paris Clément to thank for letting them in, in the first place. He was extremely intimidating, and yet, she felt naturally drawn to him; a father figure of some sorts, she seemed to view him as, even though they’d only ever really shared a few words between one another. Or, it was more like, Mal talked, and he nodded her off. That never seemed to discourage her, for ways even Mal herself couldn’t truly understand.

She could say she was oblivious in more ways than one, but even she felt the slight tension that rose and fell amongst the members from time to time. Mal was no expert on the history of the pack, as she had come in after they had resurfaced. It seemed like a sensitive topic to speak of, which she felt was fair; they’d left their beloved home, after all. It seemed like there hadn’t been a happy ending, given their return, but that didn’t stop her curiosity from bubbling every time she considered what exactly had gone down. It seemed certain days hit home harder than others, and that was when she was most determined to cheer her peers up. It never worked, or if it did, she never caught on.

She couldn’t help but feel it was best that she hadn’t experienced everything before their return to the forest. Mal liked to think her positive vibes did some good. Or, she just annoyed people. Again, if that was the case, she did a rather good job of disregarding it.

Now, Mal was ready to get on with her day. As someone who oddly found joy in colour-coding her outfits depending on the time of year, she was happy to go with a pair of burnt orange flare pants – it matched the remaining leaves on the nearby trees perfectly. The second her fingers curled around a plain white shirt, Mal knew she’d made a mistake, for she always found a way to get a white shirt dirty, but that didn’t stop her from slipping it on anyway. Slipping a heather-grey trench coat on overtop, she departed from her room with a skip in her step. She was always embarrassingly hungry in the mornings, yet never seemed to have the right appetite to eat a proper meal. Therefore, Mal grabbed an apple off the counter, gave it a quick rinsing, and continued her way along. She supposed finding Horace was the best thing to do, or even Gordon if Horace wasn’t easy to track down, but that didn’t stop her from leaving her cabin upon setting eyes on someone familiar. Mal liked to tell herself she was friends with most of her packmates in one way or another, and her relationship with Hazel Kearsey was no different. It was an odd friendship, the type where Mal basically just followed her around, but even if Hazel didn’t suspect it, Mal had her back. Always.

“Hazel, Hazel,” she called out in a sing-song voice as she pushed the door open. The tone was audibly that of sarcasm; Mal had never been a chipper morning person. “Good morning, my dear sweet friend. Don’t you look like you’re having the time of your life! What'cha up to?”

The early morning breeze always acted as a form of comfort for Draco. The way it snaked in, out, and around the thin arches of the tree branches; how it embedded its many secrets into the roots of one’s hair and the pores of their skin; its ability to wrap itself around an individual until its cold touch dissolved into that of consolation; all of it made him feel tied down to his surroundings, as if it was a gentle reminder that he was still alive and thriving in the real world. Sometimes, it barely felt like it. Right now was one of those times.

It wasn’t uncommon to catch Draco sneaking out of the camp before the sun itself had risen to begin its day. He didn’t dislike his packmates or the place he called home, but he often felt claustrophobic and tied down when surrounded by so many people. It was why he so often visited the skinny river near one of the borders of their camp. There was something about watching the water trickle by, sometimes by its lonesome, sometimes carrying a gift from Mother Nature, that soothed him. Draco knew all-too-well that for hours, he could easily remain by the river’s edge and watch the gentle flow, if it weren’t for his piling responsibilities back in camp. Dokja was a strong leader, a good leader, despite his youthful age, and Draco respected him for keeping things in check the way he did. That didn’t mean Draco and the rest had nothing to do, though, and the Patroller knew that he’d have to return shortly.

He supposed the main reason he’d stuck around the water’s edge for as long as he did that morning was because he was half hoping to spot someone who’d developed into a familiar face. He knew her as Summer, but that was almost all he knew of her. They didn’t speak much; Draco suspected their roles within their separate packs had much to do with that. Her presence reminded him of a fawn, the way she darted out of the shadows for merely a few heartbeats before leaping off towards the rays of sunlight. He didn’t know why he liked seeing her, especially since nothing ever happened. It just seemed nice to see someone so far out here who respected his boundaries, he supposed.

With a sigh, Draco snapped out of his thoughts and stood, scooping up his leather jacket that he’d tossed on the moss a little while ago. Shrugging it on, he turned in the direction of their main camp, allowing his wolf to push forward to grant him extra speed as he rushed back towards the pack. The fresh air was delightfully tasty, and he felt brighter and more alert by the time he neared the cabins. Back in human form, Draco ruffled out his wind-blown hair, then immediately started up towards the first familiar face he could find. Dokja.

“Morning,” he called out in a somewhat gruff tone, sticking his hands in the pockets of his jacket and sending Dokja a small nod of greeting. Even to this day, Draco never really knew if he was supposed to greet him as Dokja or as Alpha. “What’s the plan for today?”

It hadn’t taken Keegan long to get up and out of bed that morning. For whatever reason, she had had a horrible sleep, tossing and turning until the sun made its first appearance of the day, but that didn’t stop her from getting up before she had the chance to even consider falling back asleep. Her hair was a mess, with bits sticking out like the half-dying brambles near camp, and she had no choice but to braid it back to avoid looking like she’d just walked through a tornado. She left the comforts of her room with little hesitation, head up high as she strolled down to the front of the house. Never one for breakfast, Keegan barely blinked an eye at the kitchen as she passed it, continuing about as if she was on a mission.

Within seconds, she found herself glancing around the centre of the camp, hands planted firmly on her hips. She was the newest addition to the official hunting group, having graduated from her role as trainee a little over a year ago, and while she felt she’d made enough friends within her group, she still spent a lot of time with someone else: Noa Wakefield. Keegan absolutely adored her; despite only being a few years older than the girl, Keegan still felt a desire to treat her as though Noa was her younger sister. She had figured out almost immediately that Luke wasn't overly fond of it, but after sending enough kisses, thumbs up, or double-handed waves in the patroller’s direction, Keegan learned to tune it out. She also knew she had an easier time doing that than Noa herself did, which she supposed was understandable, given how much of a mother figure Luke portrayed herself to be. The icy blue-eyed stare was certainly something Keegan could always feel on the back of her neck, but Noa’s innocent laugh and bright smile were enough to cancel out Luke’s ogling.

“Noa!” she called out once she was able to successfully pinpoint the trainee, pushing her way towards her friend. Surely her calling would bring out the sister soon enough, but that didn't stop Keegan, not even for a second. “Hi, darling, how’d you sleep?” Keegan knew very well that she was a completely different person around her friends than she was to the rest of the pack, and she was most delighted keeping it that way. Being open and considerate was hard, and she certainly didn’t need to gift everyone with that. Not everyone deserved it, in her opinion.

          ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
xxxxA lithe young woman with long, snow-blonde hair had awoken before the sun had risen as per usual. In fact, since the wandering red pine pack had lingered their way back into their previous territory, Summer had little time to even think about sleep to begin with. Nights were far too long now and the glowing ball of sunlight just seemed to sneak its way into her bedroom far after she had left the cabin. Everything was so different since they came back, with the new leader that had taken over almost too easily and whispered her father's death sentence through war with the black sky pack, being the very last stones that came crashing down onto the head of the girl and sinking the notes of happiness within her. Still, she managed to hold an innocent smile on her face and hide behind walls so very high when around her very own pack.

xxxx Summer had been sitting on the porch outside of a small, wooden cabin attached to a little greenhouse-like shed which was lined with plastic tarps to keep what herbs they had left out of November’s cold. She was dressed in a thick, dark navy oversized sweatshirt, one with sleeves so large that she had to roll up, a white t-shirt underneath that's collar peaked from her neck, simple black leggings, and a pair of short, creamy-beige boots. Laying on a towel beside her were a few freshly picked herbs and items in which she’d found earlier in the morning. Her dark brown eyes scanned them over carefully as she sipped hot, Flowering tea and jotted down a couple messily written notes in her notebook. Only once did Summer’s gaze of shadowy brown flicker upwards as the scent of Paris drew closer to the center of the camp and made a slight chill run down her spine.

            ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
xxxxxAva stretched out in the obnoxiously bright red blanket of her bed, dotted with plastic pearl beads and fringe, in which she forced her parents to buy when they had gone on a trip to the town long ago. It was her favorite and nobody was going to tell her otherwise, not even her sister, Charlie. At this time, the sunlight's warm rays were bursting through the rust colored curtains of her room, the next thing that Ava complained about when she could. For a trainee, perhaps she was just a little bit spoiled. only a little bit, right? Finally, after several minutes of thinking about the day in a lazily fashion, the little brunette shuffled out of her bed, slid on fluffy slippers, and opened a window in the cabin bedroom to see what the temperature was like. Her nose twitched a little, taking in the scents of many creatures and the soft wind that whistled through the trees. The girl's mis-matched eyes drifted whilst she scanned the camp and looked at the familiar faces of her family and friends before closing the window.

xxxxxNot long after, the girl sneaked out of the cabin and strolled around the camp in a lavender & white bomber jacket, pastel blue high-waisted jeans with a white turtle-neck tucked in, and white boots with a small heel that made her somewhat taller, but probably not enough to her liking. The front pieces of her hair were pinned to the back of her head with a couple of bobby-pins, just so it would stay out of her face as she walked. The girl's eyes looked around for her sister or Reave, but otherwise seemed less than interested in helping Adam with the wood or anyone else for that matter. Work certainly wasn't the young teenager's favorite thing in the world, she much preferred swimming in the summer or going to town to explore whenever possible, that which seemed far less often in late fall and freezing winter months.
