I look at Danny, and lower my knife, slipping it back into my belt. I advance slowly, preparing to summon fire. "Danny, I'm going to try and help you," I say, trying to show no fear.

My breathing hitches at the snarl, but I keep going, my hands out in front of me as slivers of smoke begin to dance and writhe away from my palms, the beginnings of flame showing under the surface of my skin.
