Sleepily, Pyrite blinked open his eyes in his soft bead of blankets. Stretching luxuriously, he got to his paws and padded calmly around his house, searching for food. Upon seeing one of his owners, he dashed over, mewing loudly. His owner patted his head, and opened a can of wet food for the tom. Thankfully, Pyrite ate before shimming our the cat door and strolling through his yard.

River walked slowly down the street, giving only brief glances to the houses lining the block, none really catching his attention. He couldn't smell any food waste that the humans let out that were any good (all that stuff would be readily available at night, not so early) and he didn't know the housecats along this block--although he never had made a point to get to know any housecats in the first place. Living with humans, doing their bidding, and being a soft, warm little plaything had never appealed to him, nor could he see the appeal in eating the dry mess that most housecats were fed. Of course, most of the housecats he had met insisted that their way of life was easier, not to mention safer, and he rarely ever got in a word otherwise.
River hesitated, before launching himself onto the top of the fences. It was safer to walk along the fences than on the sidewalk, although it did increase the chances of a housecat approaching him. He gambled on the fact that no one knew him along this block and probably wouldn't bother with him at all.

With a start, Pyrite turned his head up to the fence outlining the other yards. A thin yet fluffy brown tabby now sat on to of the fence. Cautiously, he walked forward. It appeared that this cat had no collar, suggesting he was a stray, and strays could be dangerous.

River glanced down as he scented a new cat--a housecat, by the smell of him. He was an orange and white tabby, and well fed--as far as housecats went. Caution was written all over his face and River twitched his whiskers, amused.
He was possibly the least dangerous cat out there, but he was still impressed by the fact that this cat had enough sense to be cautious--many housecats he knew simply strolled up and started chatting to anyone like they were the best of buds. He tolerated it, but some other cats didn't.
He gave the ton a small dip of his head, indicating that he wasn't any threat and that he was just passing through. Sometimes even that small movement lead to a spat in the alleys, especially with territorial cats, but he figured the small assurance was safe enough with the housecat.

Pyrite contined to move forward, tail twitching curiously. ”Who are you...?” he asked, walking right up to fence, but not climbing up it. He didn’t want to be attack or seem threatening. This cat appeared to be okay, but one could never be too sure.

River fought the urge to roll his eyes as the housecat addressed him. He should have known. When was the last time he had gotten past a housecat without being questioned to the point where it was near interrogation?
But the tom did ask, and it would be impolite not to reply, "River," he said, taking a closer look at the housecat. He didn't seem like as much an idiot as some other cats he had come across,
nor did he seem like a threat.

Pyrite nodded slowly at the tom’s answer. He didn’t seem too pleased to be asked, but Pyrite felt as if it was his right to know. River was on his territory. ”I am Pyrite, and what are you doing here...?” his eyes narrowed slightly as he observed the stray.
