River jerked slightly as a cat landed in front of him. It took him a moment to recognize him as the housecat from a few days ago. He forced himself to relax, loosening his muscles.
"What are you doing here?" he asked, blinking at the housecat.

Pyrite smiled lightly at River. ”I...went looking for you.” he purred nervously. He tom would of course be unhappy to see him, Pyrite was a house cat and he was a street cat.

"Why?" River asked, flinching at the harshness of his tone. He shook his head slightly, "Sorry," he said, trying to force his voice from the snappish grate he was accustomed to, "It's been a hard couple of days," he sighed slightly and tilted his head, "Why did you want to find me?" he asked, hoping that his voice sounded softer than his first demand for an answer.

Pyrite’s ears flattened against his head at the sharpness of his tone, but he quickly relaxed. ”No cat has talked to me for weeks. I wanted to say hi again.” he mewed sadly. It was true, not even the house cats he’d known forever talked to him anymore.

"Oh," River said, blinking at the housecat, "Er, I'm not sure if I'm the best..." River broke off, remembering that he still had to traverse through the housecat's yard if he wanted to get anywhere decent. He could be friendly, right? Sure, he had never really tried before--perhaps that was why most cats didn't like him.
"Well," River said with a small laugh, "Hello."

Pyrite smiled, before hanging his head. ”Sorry,” he said, tail curling around his paws. ”I understand why you don’t want me here.” He mewed apologetically. This was River’s territory and life, and he shouldn’t be bugging in.

"It's alright," River said, his tail twitching slightly. He definitely was not good at this, "I'm sorry I'm not the best conversationalist--I hope I'm not coming off as irritated or anything--it's not anything you've done I'm just..." River trailed off, wondering how to phrase it the best, "Other cats just don't talk to me often."

The house cat smiled. ”Sounds like we’re in the same boat.” he said. ”So...where do you live? My brother once saw a stray living in a big pipe when we were kittens.” He closed his eyes, thoughts resting on those good moths when he and his siblings were altogether.

River raised his eyebrows, an amused smile crossing his face and his whiskers twitching, "I see," he said. He actually knew the stray--Brady--if he remembered correctly. Brady was a friendly enough cat and he was rarely seen outside a small radius from his pipe. His haunts never took him that close to Brady's pipe, so he rarely ever saw him.
"I have a covered crate in the alley down a few," River said, wrinkling his nose as he remembered that the crate was now damp and would remain so for the next few days, "It's not too bad--if it doesn't rain."

Pyrite cocked his head to the side. He couldn’t imagine not living in his safe, warm house. ”It rained last night, does that mean you can’t stay there?” he asked curiously.
