Hopefully this isn't a dumb question but is there any way to send people messages??

yep! all you have to do is go to the profile of whoever you want to message, just under their avatar, there should be a section called ''contact [whoever's profile it is]'', under it there's a little button that says ''send private message'', just click that and then you're all set.

You just needed your first post approved. Which has just happened. You should be able to send PMs and trade messages now (:
