Story: the walls were closing in on guinevere.
she hadn't meant to do it, she didn't mean to, it was one simple mistake and now everything was ruined.
she stared at the fishtank. the walls of the tank were dark green and murky, and the water was grayer than a winter night. at the top of the tank a few small fish were floating. eve pulled herself away, furious and devastated. she had agreed to do one job--housesit for her neighbors for a week, and she'd killed all their fish.
her neighbors would be furious. they would look at her with disgust and never speak to her again. they would tell all the other neighbors how awful she was and then everyone would hate her and there was absolutely no way out of it. she had ruined her only chance at making friends with any of her neighbors and now she would have no friends and she would be lonely and sad and hated all by herself and--
she realized she wasn't breathing.
exasperated and exhausted, she took and deep breath and slid down the wall, crying. she had no idea what to do and waited solemnly for her seemingly inevitable doom.
until, that is, she saw a flash of orange.
at first, it made her more miserable. she thought it was another dead one floating up to fish heaven at the top of the tank, and she felt so revolted she nearly threw up right there.
until she realized he was swimming. swimming! he was alive! guinevere wasn't completely out of options!
except that she had no idea what to do with the fish. if he stayed in the tank, he would die. it was filthy in there and she had no idea what she was doing.
so, she did the best she could--she grabbed the fish net, scooped him out, and put him in a small glass, filled with water.
she watched him explore his new environment as she got grounded again. she dropped a few pebbles in the glass to make it more homey. "it's gonna be okay, little buddy. we'll make it through this. i won't let you die. just keep swimming."
