wOw, that would be devastating... But I like Manuel; his character seems very sharp and defined, even in a short one-shot. c:
I'm so sad for him, though... Poor guy... <3

also yaay I'm so glad someone's still doing this haha ;p

thank you for your comment! yeah manuel sees things very black/white and so i thought it'd be the most interesting to test him like this.
and yes, i haven't given up quite yet! i'm hoping one day i'll finish all 100 but until then i have short-sighted goals. (almost at 20% completion!)
Ah, well good for you! c:

Wow, that was really dark...

But I must admit, it was certainly thought-provoking. c:

      story time!
so, i posted prompt #86 and i thought it was one of my best-written one-shots
only to have it taken down because it was inappropriate
(my fault, really, but i'm still salty about it)
and because i was so frustrated by it
(and because i lost the piece of writing that i was so proud of)
i stopped writing for a while
and also it made me realise that i'm super old
in terms of the content of my stories
but i think i've gotten over it for the most part (i think)
and i'm determined to finish this blasted contest
even if it's the last thing i do
      right then -
      on we go.

"D O N ' T S H O O T !"
────────────────────────────────────────────────────

of fates we cannot escape // characters: richard powell, felix kahn // words: 748

Running. Always running. Just the two of them - ready to take on the world and anyone who

An employer and his shield; a soldier and a criminal; two brothers in arms.

Felix had lost count of the days they'd been travelling together, dashing across geographical borders and disguising as people who didn't exist.

And they were back - back where it had all started. A bad idea, if anyone were to ask him - but no one did. And he wasn't there to give his opinion. He was there to guard and protect, to throw a few punches and pull a few triggers.

A sliver of light fell onto the filthy carpeted ground. "Are you crazy?" he hissed. He was on his feet in a flash, pacing across the room to the window. "Are you trying to get us killed?"

Richard just shrugged nonchalantly. "Sorry." He closed the curtain and plunged the dingy motel room into darkness.

He made a move to walk away, but Felix grabbed his arm. "You're acting strange."

        "Am I?"

"Why did you want to come back here?"

Richard looked away. "There are things I have to settle."

        Felix's eyes narrowed. "What things?"

Richard shook his head. "I can't say."

        "Richard-"

"I don't pay you to ask questions. It's none of your concern."

"It is when it puts your life in danger!" Felix frowned deeply. "What are you not telling me?"

        He was met with silence.

"Forget it." Felix scoffed. "Perhaps I was mistaken when I thought we were friends."

        Richard sighed.

A chasm formed, deep and wide, between the two. The cramped room seemed so much larger, and the silence so much louder. Unsaid words echoed within the four walls, like whispers from the ghosts that followed them.

        Seconds passed. Minutes.

        Indecision.

        Fear.

        Confusion.

"Felix, I think you should know-"

        "Shut up."

        "I know you're angry, but-"

"Shut. Up." Felix frowned. "I'm trying to listen."

        "To what?"

"I hear footsteps. Heavy boots climbing up the back stairs." He stood up. "We've been found."

Panic came onto Richard's face. "Oh." He paused. He sighed. "Felix-"

"Later!" Felix hissed with such ferocity that Richard didn't dare argue.

The bodyguard was like a machine, loading guns and arming himself with various weapons. Richard had never noticed it before, the way Felix moved so methodically yet gracefully, the determination burning in his icy eyes, the murmurs he uttered under his breath as he prepared for battle.

Their eyes met. "What are you doing? Pack your things and get ready to jump!"

Richard didn't move. "Felix, I'm sorry."

Felix brushed it aside. "Yes, yes, you're sorry, I'm sorry. We can resolve our friendship later, now you need to leave! If the police arrive and you-"

        "I called them here."

A pause. "What?" The word came out of Felix like an explosion, a blast fuelled by betrayal and anger and confusion and panic.

The door slammed off its hinges. "Freeze!"

Felix acted on instinct. A gun appeared in his hand. A blast echoed through the room.

One of the policemen clutched his leg in pain.

"DON'T SHOOT!" Richard yelled loudly, darting between Felix and the police. His arms were thrown into the air.

"What are you doing?" Felix was shouting now. There was fear in his voice, and desperation.

Richard glanced back with a sorrowful smile. "The right thing."

        "But-"

But Richard was gone. He was dragged out roughly, stumbling and grunting the whole way out.

Felix watched in horror. But there was no time to lose. His brain demanded he choose: fight or flight?

He stared at the remaining policemen in the room. Then he turned, and jumped out of the window.

He heard shouting from behind him, and he fired his gun blindly at the men chasing him. His heart was beating rapidly in his chest - the only proof that it hadn't been wrenched out when they took Richard.

He darted behind a fence. No one was following him. They weren't there for him anyway.

Felix peered through a hole in the fence. He caught a glimpse of Richard's curly locks and dark skin. He was there there, half a dozen policemen flanking him - so close, yet so far. They pushed him against the wall, cuffed him and shoved him into their car.

And just like that, Richard was gone.

It was only when the sirens had faded away did Felix realise that there were tears streaming down his cheeks.

What good was a bodyguard with no one to protect? What good was a friend with no one to care for?

What good was he without Richard by his side?

Ooh! Will we get some backstory for these two? It sounds like they've been through a lot together!

It sucks you had to remove your first-draft, though :I Did you at least have it saved elsewhere?

i don't have anything planned at the moment,

no, unfortunately i didn't! i don't save any of these one-shots because i just assume that the thread will be a storage for my writing. but i think i'm over it now, and i'm trying to look forward.
