“They are innocent. You have no right to destroy innocent humans.”
I say to myself, teeth clenched, trying with all my willpower to keep the demon
inside of me from coming out.
“But I will, Rashmi. You can’t stop me.” Deep laughter reverberated in my skull,
and I knew there was nothing I could do.
Demonic laughter. That was the last thing I heard before blacking out.
When I regained control, I knew exactly what had happened. The demon was silent
as I wrapped bandages around my neck, hiding the demon’s eye.
I slowly made my way back to the village, as the demon had left me in the cave
I called home, which was a good ways out from it. I could hear the villagers screaming
and crying out. What had the demon done? Warm air and ashes blew around me
as I drew closer. I cautiously entered the clearing and the devastation before my
eyes was heartbreaking. Almost everything was destroyed, some buildings still on
fire. A few human children spotted me as I walked closer. They hesitated for
only a second, then turned and fled. They knew who I was, what
I--the demon--had done.

I collapsed, falling in a heap on the ground. The one place I had loved,
that I had vowed to protect, was completely destroyed. There was no
way I could repair the broken ties to the villagers. No way to repay
them for the damage that the demon had caused.
As I laid motionless on the ground, I made a promise to myself to
never love anything ever again. Lest I seek to destroy the things
I love, then there was no point in loving them. The demon knew
my weakness, I could feel it.
And the first step to my promise was to get up and leave the
humans to their pain. To leave those I love, to suffer in something
I had caused. There was no point blaming the demon anymore,
this disaster was my fault.
So I left.
