Lorcan was not expected to live. He was born early and his dam was warned not to get attached to him. He was much smaller than he ought to have been, his tail was an odd stunted little thing, and much more damning than that, he was born without his back right leg. A three-legged foal would have been of little use and had little chance in any herd, but within the Gahana Jund who focused so much on the beats, the rhythms of their dances.. It would be kinder for him to slip away silently in the night, to let his dam move on and try again.
But Lorcan did not go silently, in fact he did not go at all. He was a determined little beast from the very start. He may not have been born whole, but none could argue that the little colt didn't posses an absolutely ferocious lust for life. He ran and capered like any colt, though he was much more awkward and landed on his face more than a few time. He tried to dance, but there were very few who would spend their time on the strange little lad. Until he met
Inbal. The older mare, then a dancer, was initially amused by Lorcan and his antics, and let him follow and try to mimic her. As time passed however, her amusement faded, to be replaced by respect as she watched his unswerving dedication and determination even as other herd members, harassed, belittled or ignored him.
"Fah! Show me again Inbal, I almost had it that time!" Lorcan pleaded as he rose from the ground, shaking the dust out of his coat.
"Is this what you really want to do?" The question had been wearing on Inbal. The truth was that Lorcan had become passable as a dancer, in his own way with his own style, but while it was her passion, and she was certain she would soon be selected as a ceremonial dancer, she wasn't sure that it was his. Sometimes she thought he did it only to spend time with her, because who else would bother?
"What? I mean if you've another step to show me instead..""No, I mean all of this, dancing. Is this what you want? If you could be anything.""Well I can't be anything, can I?" He asked wryly, turning to expose his missing leg.
"If I could.. I'd be a warrior!""Dancing is much harder than fighting, if you can dance you can fight. Lorcan, this is your life. If you want to be a warrior than be a warrior. You only get one chance at this you know.""Inbal I.. Look at me. Even if I had all four legs I'm a runt. They'll never let me be a warrior.""Let you? Lorcan no one lets us have what we want. Do you think they'll let me be ceremonial dancer? I'm going to work and take it, I'll make it mine, because it is what I want more than anything else.""I.. Maybe you're right, maybe I can do it!""It will be like dancing, make your weaknesses your strengths. So you're small, they won't be used to biting and striking so far down. You don't move the way anyone else does, it will be harder to predict where you'll be. It will be hard, but it this is what you want, you can do it, you can take it and make it yours."So began what Lorcan thinks of as the start of his real life. It wasn't easy. He was ridiculed and roughed up by his own herd before he ever saw the enemy, but he threw himself into it with all of his being. It wasn't easy, he has scars enough to attest to that, but the ridicule has stopped, and he has more friends and allies now than just Inbal. Lorcan loves every moment of his life.
He'd come a long way for one who wasn't supposed to live to start with.

"Lor!"That one grunted exclamation from
Bhima was all it took. The larger mare was up on her hind legs, striking at a Fung Sotw Jok stallion. The
opposing warrior was fairly evenly matched with Bhima, but being male he had extra weight and muscle on her. He too was up on his hind legs, striking back and bugling his challenge. Focused on his opponent he failed to note the small stallion who acted immediately.
Lorcan through himself in under the flailing hooves, crashing chest first into the opposing stallions underbelly. Not ready for this at all Tahkeome was thrown off balance, and with a scream he went over backwards. Immediately Bhima was on him, hooves striking down. The wild bay stallion, wounded, though not mortally, just managed to scramble to his feet and wheel away with the help of
one of his fellows who came in to help, likely a mid-ranker rather than true warrior by their reticence to engage fully.

"Hahaha, did you see 'is stupid face? Aaaaaye, that's one stallion what won't forget that for a goodly long time!""Yeah, we got him good, he never saw us coming!""You mean he never saw you coming, he saw me just fine, he just didn't reckon onna mare kickin' 'is tail.""Mare and midget, saving the day!""Aaaaye, you got that! Healers weren't half snappy today were they?""You'd think they'd like seeing us, we're not half as whiny as most of their patients.""'S 'on account of us 'avin' so much practise hey?"In Bhima, Lorcan found a fellow warrior who accepted him for exactly what he was. He never backed down and he would fight even ridiculous odds right at her side, and this was all that mattered to her. The healers complained sometimes that they were a bad influence on each other, but no one could argue that they weren't effective together. Each scar they earned, they earned proudly and worse as a badge to show the rest of the herd exactly what they'd done, what they'd borne and survived to protect and defend the rest.
