Spikelets are named for the sharp bone plates that appear on their heads, tails, backs, and even elbows. Their ancestry can be traced back to primitive dinosaurs, but through evolution they acquired mostly mammalian traits and their body structure appears to be a cross between canine and feline, with some reptilian features.
Spikelets can be any color and have any design imaginable. They have many different styles of spikes on their heads, and can have several different tail types. While head spike styles are equally variable, tail variations from the norm are more rare. Spikelets love to accessorize, and find all sorts of things to wear and decorate themselves with. If it can be found in nature, they will find a way to use it, and some even paint themselves with natural dyes made from plants and minerals.
Spikelets live for 60-70 years, mate for life, and can have litters of 1-2 kits. To protect the mother from internal damage, kits are born without spike plates, which emerge and grow over time. Rarely, Spikelets can be born with glowing eyes or markings. They can also have genetic defects including blindness, albinism, heterochromy, and others.
Spikelets live in social groups that function like tribes, containing many families, and are led by a royal family, where leadership is passed down through blood relatives. These tribes function much like medieval human societies, with similar ranks and job distribution. Spikelets have jobs that play important roles of how they act in the community. Some typical ranks or jobs are: Royalty (king, queen, prince, princess, ect.), Royal Guard, Guardsmen, Hunters, Foragers, Smiths (they make accessories and such), Generals, Soldiers, Teachers, Messengers, Entertainers, and basically anything you can think of!
