hey, all!
this is the brand-new thread for synesthesia. (woot woot!)
the old topic was actually in the 18+ forums, but people younger than 18 know what this is, so it's in general now. although, if you think it should be in a different forum, please vote above!
TheWhiteQueen created the original thread, found here. it hadn't reached a particularly high page count, but TheWhiteQueen hasn't been on in two years, and the thread needed to be updated.
so here I am.
my goal is to make this thread colorful, vibrant, updated, and user-friendly, and to make Synthetes on CS an overall welcoming community. If you have any ideas while V.2 is still new, please, feel free to post them! I would love to have input from other users.
sorry I haven't been able to make it beautiful yet, but I promise it will be completed soon!

I also have something which is sort of like a physical synesthesia (mental synesthesia is when the nerves that keep your senses straight overlap, causing people to hear or taste things when they see or read something, etc.). Whenever I put my left hand in running water, I hear and feel a rapid fluttering in my right ear. I think some of my nerves dealing with physical touch must have crossed to cause that.

it depends on the person c:
is it genetic?
yes, although specific types often differ between family members, and it can skip people in line. So you could have it, and your dad's mother (your grandmother) could have it, but your dad doesn't have to have it. it could go either way.
can you 'catch' or 'get' it?
nope.
is it common?
more than 50% of the population has a very mild version of syn, which basically is the understanding of different sounding syllables. basically, there is a test: there are two shapes. a spiky shape and a shape with rounder curves. which one would you name Kiki, and which would you name Bubba? Most of the population would name the spiky shape Kiki, and the curvy one Bubba, simply because of how the letters feel and sound compared to the shapes. More intense types of synesthesia are much less common.

most likely, yes. synthetes don't have any control over what words smell/taste/feel like.

it depends on the person, but usually no, especially for people with more pronounced syn.
can it help with studying?

do symbols and punctuation also have colors, smells, etc?

what about words in different languages?
they may be very similar or polar opposites to that same word in the synthete's native language: it all just depends on how the word sounds and looks!
what happens when you hear a word that's an onomatopoeia versus the actual sound?

do you see it or sense it?
many people just 'know' or 'sense' it. However, people with more extreme synesthesia have been known to 'project', which is seeing the color or movement out in front of them.
