MOVED!

"Don't Let the Howls Stop."

The wolf of the month is the Ethiopian Wolf, the only true wolf of Africa. They are at very high risk of dying out currently, as thei population drops more everyday. So please spare a little time to look out for this beauty that not many know exists. They need your help! There are some new stamps featuring this cutie, so be sure to pick one up on your way out! Both are made by me! c:

~

The wolf. When some people here this word, they think of a terrible, ferocious beast that will devour a human in a minute. But others, when hearing this word, think of a being totally different. A beautiful, intelligent creature with sleek fur and gentle eyes. The real personality of a wolf.

The truth is, wolves want very little to do with humans. After all, is it the wolves that come into our homes and
shoot us for sport? No. These stunning animals are just trying to live their lives. It is the people who are causing so many problems for them. I, for one, am totally against hunting, and I know many people on CS agree with me. And I think it's time we did something about it. If you want to support wolves that need your help, keep reading. Because together, we can make a difference.

Basic Wolf Facts

Postby Liru Kaulitz » Sat Jun 18, 2011 7:42 am

Puppy-hood
When wolf pups are born, they are blind and deaf, but still have a keen sense of smell. Usually, four to six pups are born in one litter. When they're born, the whole pack cares for them. They live inside a den, which can be a hole in the ground or a small cave. Sometimes, a wolf might use an old, abandoned den that used to belong to another animal. The wolf pack defends the pups by watching after them all of the time. Some of their many enemies include eagles, bears, coyotes, and many other creatures.

The pups' mother is the alpha female, since she is the only one in the pack who can give birth to any pups. When they first come out, their mother will fetal sac on the pup's head, allowing the pup to breathe. Then, she licks them dry and encourages them to nurse. Instinctively, the wolf pups will nuzzle into their mother's warm underbelly fur and try to find a teat. The milk their mother produces is watery, and contains important antibodies. While they nurse, the mother wolf will clean her pups, licking them on their belly and in their genital areas. This helps them to produce waste, which their mother licks up to keep the den clean and smell-free.

In 10-13 days, pups open their eyes. After 3 weeks, the pups' get their milk teeth, and begin to explore the den. In 4-5 weeks, they begin to have short trips from the den, and begin to eat meat. Then, at 6 weeks, they can travel a mile from the den with an adult wolf. In 12 weeks, the pups begin to come on pack hunts. Then from 15-28 weeks, their milk teeth are replaced. Finally, from 7-8 months old, they can hunt with the pack.

Diet
Wolves generally hunt hoofed animals, including elk, caribou, bison, moose, deer, and more. Since these animals are usually pretty big, wolves hunt together. But even together, it's hard to bring one of these animals down. That's why they prey on the weak, sick, or elderly members of a herd. Wolves can catch healthy animals as well, if they can catch it. They need to eat 10 pounds of meat a day.

If food is scarce, wolves will eat mice, rabbits, squirrels, and other rodents. Beavers also play an important role in a wolf's diet. Some wolves' have a diet consisting of 60% beaver. If a food doesn't agree with a wolf, it may eat grass to purge their digestive system. Wolves also may eat berries or fruits as a minor part of their diets. Sometimes, wolves are spotted catching fish as well. They sure do vary their food choices!

Communication
Wolves communicate in many different ways. Like humans, they use facial expressions to show feelings. For example, a wolf might show happiness by opening their mouth and letting their tongue hang loosely with their ears forward. When threatened, a wolf will wrinkle its nose, curl their lip, bare their teeth, open their mouth, and erect their ears. An anxious wolf may flatten its ears or draw its lips far back, then whine. Alpha wolves usually use body postures to communicate with their pack. Some dominate postures include tail partly erect, walking with head held high, and eyes looking directly at other wolves. Subordinate postures may include lowering tails, a lowering body position, and exposing their throats. They might also take small steps toward the alpha, peel back their lips, or fold back their ears.

Wolves also communicate by scent. Wolves "mark" their territory by urinating on the borders. This tells other wolves that the territory belongs to them. Wolves also use scents to locate food, pack members, and intruders.

And of course, wolves communicate by howling. Wolves howl at any time in the day, not just on the full moon. But some people think wolves are more active on that night because of the extra light the full moon provides. Wolf packs howl together sometimes. Howls start out as a sharp bark, then a low howl, that become louder and louder as other wolves start to join in. Most people believe that wolves howl for certain reasons. Some may include: to tell other wolves where in the territory they are, to find a mate, after playing or social events, to call for help, after waking up, to reassemble the pack, at the presence of an intruder, and when they are stressed out or disturbed.

Gray wolves may be okay, but wolves like red wolves and Ethiopian wolves are in danger as well. So are Mexican wolves. This thread isn't just about gray wolves.

That's fine, they aren't one of the most endangered wolves, I could see why you'd say that :)

And ~Rosewolf~, welcome to the supporters!

my favorite wolf is the maned wolf. If I had to stick in the wolf family. Though if we were talking the canine family I would say coyotes

My favorite wolf is the Mexican Wolf. They're just so beautiful to me. And I'm really sad because they're so close to being extinct. I heard they aren't even in the wild anymore: only in captivity. :( I really want to help them.
