Re: Fish Lovers 3.0 [new poll]

Hi! I'm not sure if I want to become a member of this thread yet, but I have a concern I need help with. So, tonight when I came back in my room and looked at my fish tank, I saw my female ghost shrimp eating the male. They had already been fed so I was confused. I googled why she may have done that and if it was normal. I didn't get any clear answers to my question so I decided to ask it here. Is that normal behavior? The internet said that shrimp don't usually kill each other and eat them, so I thought it must have been my betta(white opal male, adorable and rather feisty) who killed him. I am still confused about it though. My fish seemed a bit anxious when I moved him to a new tank and added in the shrimp a week later. He had lived with the shrimp in another tank, but I moved him to a bigger one cuz his life seemed a little boring to me, and I thought he could use some new space along with more of it. He seemed happy until the shrimp were added. He would always chase after them and get all puffed up when they came out into the little clearing I have for him. My mom suggested moving the plants a bit so he had more spaces to hide. I did and he seemed fine so I don't know how he could have died. I know that my shrimp were fully fed, as they usually eat the fish food that falls to the bottom of the tank and the algae and such, and I don't think she might have mated and then eaten him as she just had some shrimp babies a few days after I got her(only a week or two ago). Anyone have any idea why she might have done this? Also, any advice on how to take care of baby ghost shrimp? I have about ten of them in the tank they were born in(before I moved the shrimp and betta), but I had to move their parents out because they were getting aggressive. They seem really happy after I got them a new heater and change water out every other day. They swim around a lot and have plenty to eat, but I've never raised any creature before(except an invasive aquatic snail type that my sister didn't buy when she added a plant to her tank, but they kind of took care of themselves) and this is my first fish and shrimp. Thanks for any help or redirection I get! <3

Hi guys owo
I know this thread isn't very... busy rn, but I was wondering if anyone could answer my question.
My fish used to be gold and white, then slowly turned mostly white and a little gold. I moved him into a bigger tank, gave him more light, and he is on the same diet he was when he was gold. I've had him for 5-6 years, he started turning white about a 1-2 years ago, and throughout tank cleanings he's just stayed white, no signs of infections or illness. Could it be genetics?

Assuming this is a Goldfish. Goldfish can change colour throughout their life. As long as the water quality is good and he isn’t showing signs of disease, I would expect this just to be normal colour change. White Goldfish can go orange or orange and white. Black goldfish can go gold. Gold ones can go white. Red ones can also end up red and white.

How many gallons is your tank?: twenty nine,
Number and Type of fish in tank: five + a snail ( moor goldfish, two orandas, iridescent shark, & a pleco )

Did you cycle it?: just did a water change,
If possible what are the ammonia nitrite and nitrate levels?: n / a, i ordered more test strips but they could take a week to arrive, < / 3
Does it have a heater? yes,
If it has a thermometer, what is the water temperature? seventy seven F
What is the issue or question?: i'm having a hard time seeing if it is ich they're having, the moor has acquired faint white spotting, and maybe one of the orandas,, the moor has been laying at the bottom for a few days, but has maintained their appetite,, would it be okay to treat for ick even if it is not ich, or would this affect them,? image
      Any other information?: n / a , thank you, < 3

If you have any photos, please post them. Photos help a lot for diagnosis.

I would treat for ick but it may also be velvet disease since the spots are so small/faint and there's a lot. I'd incourage possibly treating for that first as it can cause lethargy and ultimately death as it suffocates the fish.

I'd suggest turning off the lights for a few days and start treating with ParaGuard. I had an issue with velvet before on goldfish and turning off the lights and having tank heat elevated (for me it was just leaving fans off as my internal house temp is already hot) by the slightest worked wonders. I treated for roughly 2 weeks to be safe. I'd suggest keeping an extra close eye on your fish if you do treat with ParaGuard as the tank seems a little small for all of them and they could get super stressed out. The reason for lights out is because velvet is a photosynthetic parasite - I hope this helps and that your fish get better!

How many fish tanks do you have: Five.
I have an 8ft, three 3fts and a 4ft. I also work at a fish shop so I spend my day looking after over a hundred tanks housing marines and freshwater fish.
Types of fish that you have: My three 3fts are home to my Fancy Goldfish, including a one eyed rescue from work and a fish that was dumped at the shop. My 8ft is home to a Ripsaw Catfish, a Gold Synodontis, a Rusty Pleco, a couple of Humbug Catfish and another Synodontis, which I don't recall the species of, as well as a approximately 20 year old Tinfoil Barb and a trio of Filament Barbs. There is also a trio of adopted Zebra Loach. The 4ft is currently empty, but I'm planning to house a Chrysicthys ornatus that lost an eye to some Oscars that he jumped in with at work, a Tyre Track or Fire Eel and a Ctenopoma acutirostre.
I used to keep Siamese Fighters, both males and females. My speciality at work is with Labyrinth Fish and Fancy Goldfish.
    Your fishs' names:
How long have you had fish: I grew up with them. My Grandad kept fish and knew the owner of one of the old fish shops that used to be in town so was given a Giant Gourami one time. My Dad used to breed a variety of tropical fish and is only just now getting back into the hobby.

I work with a variety of fish including my favourites Snow Flake Eel, Mbu and Fahaka Pufferfish, Flagtails, Giraffenose Catfish and Porcupine Puffers. We occasionally have Lionfish in that are a lot of fun once they start feeding. My job is dealing with fish related problems, be it with the tank or fish sickness, so feel free to shoot me a message if you ever need a hand with anything.

    An update after two years.

I still work at the Aquatics Shop and I still specialise in Labyrinth Fish and Fancy Goldfish.
Our tanks have downsized to the 8ft and a 4ft as well as a pond. The pond is home to a few Gudgeon, four Wakin and a handle of a comet Goldfish in a mix of varieties. The 4ft tank is now home to our surviving Fancy Goldfish, predominantly now made up of stunted rescues that customers have brought back to the shop [the shop is not allowed to take Goldfish due to the KHV virus, so if they refuse to leave with the fish my coworkers would euthanise them if I don't take them]. The 8ft tank is currently home to the Ripsaw Catfish and Gold Synodontis, but we need to rescape it so they'll be getting an update soon. Once the 8ft is finished, we will be looking for a Giant Red Tail Gourami and some other tank mates that I'm open to suggestions for.

If I had a tank as large as the one you are working on, I would for sure have at least 1 arowana. Ever since I discovered them, they have been a dream fish of mine
