Maybe you could stuff a kong with a combination of things he likes and can eat.

Some essential oils are toxic to dogs if ingested, I would be very careful.

^ I second what Imzadi83 said, essential oils are very potent!
Also dogs have much more sensitive noses than we do, so even if you think it smells nice it could be way too strong for your dog.

Essential oils on dogs do not help them relax in fact it may irritate their skin or cause them to get sick. if they lick it. A dog may like the smell of our feet but do not put essential oils on your pets it might do more harm than good. Especially if you've never put oils on your pet better to be safe than have to take your pet to a vet for a skin rash.

It comes up so fast, I know it's like getting hit by a truck. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to talk about it. Enjoy Spike while you have him, he doesn't know what's going on and can still enjoy life.

dont give up,....it sound bad ...bad does not need to be so bad...get a second vet or go to clinic for full check... look for a vet or clinic who knows and works with this, or natural medication....maybe they ca help bether than a normal vet...or it is not so bad, or with the right treatment he could live some more years...
....and even when really not...just be with your dog, he needs you and your familys love now even more then ever, try a harness that does not touch the throat not collar..
wish you good luck, hope you tell how i goes!

Thank you guys for the replies. <3 The news was really just so sudden and hard to cope with in the moment. Had a couple days to let it soak in and I'm feeling more positive knowing what the plans are for his treatment.

Spike went in to see a specialist and had his first round of chemotherapy this afternoon. Luckily this shouldn't make him feel very sick, buuut he cannot perform as a detection dog anymore. He's still going to work on "light duty", but he is no longer allowed to go out and officially complete vehicle searches and such. I'm just glad it isn't a situation where he is suddenly not able to do anything after six years of working every single day lol
I have been told that he won't be retired until after he completes his treatment. Super thankful for this because we don't need to pay for any of his medical bills while he is owned by the government and they are taking the best care of our boy possible. <3 This is really so nice of the agency to do, especially considering they won't be able to get another day of work out of him.

im not sure what recipe you could use..., but there are some recipe you could try an make your dog something yourself, maybe a cake or some nice different dog cupcake for diabetic dog, but something that the other can eat too...i always bake a healthy carrot or apple or whatever cake that out two dogs can eat together...something that even my family could eat.... ;) with one cake we even did this it was so nice (this was without meat or such...with fruit and carrot^^)

That is really great, im happy for you that he gets treatment now, there is a big hope with this, and that you dont have to carry the medical bill as he is still active on duty working dog :D

but maybe he can stay as teacher after the treatment or for shows...and work more like this...
...not sure about breeding, it would maybe depend on if the puppys can get this too.

Good luck, hope you tell how it goes! all will go well now, i wish you this :)

    hey guys!

any tips on how to keep your small dog from jumping up and down, especially since he's 9 years old?

and any tips on stopping them from licking their paws? he would often lick his two front paws and they would become very wet,
    moreover he has long hair

    thank you in advance!

When he jumps up, I'm guessing you're not completely ignoring him? Even if its a 'no' or 'stop', that may be encouraging him. When he jumps, COMPLETELY ignore him, no looking,
touching, speaking, not even a nudge away if he gets annoying. Simple move away and start doing something else and eventually he will learn that jumping up gets him nowhere.

As for the paw licking, that's normal, there really isn't a way to stop them from grooming. If their paws are just getting wet from licking that's fine,
if its like compulsive licking and he has balding spots and such, then its a problem.

I just bought some nice trimming shears, and I cannot WAIT to get my hands on Geyser. I need to make him all pretty for our first AKC show together. His ears are atrocious and the tuck area needs a lot of work. I'm going to groom him like the borzoi with a few minor changes (lack of double coat and back fur) so this should be easy-peasy!
I'm so excited lol

Anyone have favorite brushes/scissors/dremels/etc. that they would reccomend? Im totally digging this self-grooming thing
