i watched kung fu panda 4 and it's rekindled my love for animal designs! however, when it comes to drawing/designing them, i fall a little short. i decided to make this art contest as a way to A) get a few new character designs and B) see artists' art :)

the rules
1. don't steal art, and if using bases, make sure you have permission please! tess's rules apply.
2. reference sheets (nothing crazy needed) are cool, but not required!
3. not necessarily a rule but don't stress yourself out
4. digital art and oekaki are preferred, but if you do traditional, please make sure the picture is easily visible when taking a picture! whatever medium you use will not affect the way i judge the design itself!
5. if you don't win, you're free to keep your design, but i want to keep the top 3 places' designs! since it's a character design competition, i will probably ask to keep some of the entries even if they don't place in the top 3. if that is the case, we can work something out! i'm not in a position to offer usd, and i don't have a bunch of c$ to offer, hence why this is a pets-only competition. so, since the stakes are lower, don't feel obligated to put tons and tons of effort in. the design > the detail!
6. have fun and use this opportunity to experiment with styles! this is an oc comp, but it's also a chance to do new art and show your stuff.

likes
- d&d classes (druid, monk, bard, etc!)
- "unconventional" animal species ("exotic" mammals, underwater animals, et cetera. sort of like how kung fu panda has all sorts of animals)
- cool accessories
- magic! bonus if it pertains to their character
- melee weapons like staffs, clubs, axes, swords, etc
- artificers......
- cute head accessories like goggles or stuff
- steampunk, cyberpunk, medieval, really just any theme lol idk have those examples

dislikes
- i tend not to go for more "anthro" designs? like, i'm fine with upright standing animals like seven bear or these two but traditional anthro style isn't the vibe for this one (unless you can make a case that the kfp animals are anthro, which is valid i suppose)
- eyestrain color palettes
- simple in the sense that the design isn't very thought out? i'm enthusiastic about concepts (obviously) but if you give me "jimbob whose only personality trait is that he's a bear" then i might not love it as much as "jimbob, who's like, totally a bear, but he thinks he's a cat because he was raised by housecats and not the other way around because there's a size difference there but he just thinks he's a big cat"
- mythical/fantasy animals (love them, but not the vibe)
- human/humanoid for the sake of this comp
- plain dog/cat breeds (**NOW I AM OKAY WITH CATS ESPECIALLY, BUT I WOULD PREFER THAT THEY ARE DIFFERENT THAN JUST THE "this is quite obviously a cat." BREEDS? I WOULD AGAIN PREFER NOT-DOMESTIC ANIMALS BUT THE RIGHT ONE COULD MAKE AN EXCEPTION HERE.)
anyways, i know it's kinda low stakes because the prizes aren't as rare as i'd like them to be, but i also don't want anyone to think i'm asking for a shaded, rendered, polished, cried over, realistic to the point of reaching into my computer and petting its soft head fullbody for pixels in the shape of a pet. i think there's a lot of room for people to have fun, and no one is obligated to participate in an art competition :) ok. enough yapping. have fun. ⋆.ೃ࿔*:･
