Hi there! My name is smellbig wayhaught and welcome to the new CS Book Club! A while back someone I was trading with asked for book recommendations to go along with the trade. This got me thinking - what if there was a place where the bibliophiles of CS could share the books they liked, leave reviews, and discuss the newest publications? Hence the creation of this, the CS Book Club!

In the book club, members can share anything and everything related to poetry and prose. Come and join the fun! Please note - whenever you're speaking about a book, make sure to include the author's name so that everyone can know which book you're talking about!

This month's theme: Fantasy
Discuss your favorite fantasy books and get recommendations from others!

Recommendation of the Month

Postby wayhaught » Tue May 07, 2019 9:54 am

June's recommendation, coming from xBunx is the Elementals series by Brigid Kemmerer.

Genre: Fantasy, YA fiction, Action, Mystery, Romance
Stars: ★★★★☆
xBunx review:
The Elementals is about 4 brothers blessed (or should I say cursed?) with the power of the four elements, fire (Gabriel), water (Chris), air (Nick), earth (Michael). Everybody is somehow close to an element, however all 4 brothers are exactly on the point of a pentagram (star showing all 4 elements including spirit). This gives them immense control over their element due to how close they are. However, their parents were killed, and with Guides, people with special control over every element trying to kill them each brother has an obstacle each need to overcome.
I really like this series due to the close attention to detail and immersing story lines. When Brigid writes each book from a different point of view it gives you a sense of closeness with each brother (And Hunter, a "guide") and it is easy to relate and sympathise with them.
There is a nice dose of romance ;3, but also mystery and the series will have you upside down because it can get real intense.

I would recommend this book to... If you're a big fan of elemental books or magic in general. Overall I reccommend it to YA readers, or anyone who enjoys action, thriller, mystery or romance.
Anything else?: The books in order are: Storm (Chris; Water), Spark (Gabriel; Fire), Spirit (Hunter, All Elements), Secret (Nick, Air), Sacrifice (Michael, Earth) And if you do read it, what's your favourite book? Personally mine is Spark~

Ooo I've been wanting a CS book club!! <3

I want to join the book club!
Username: Pyjaks
Pronouns: She/her
Your favorite book and/or author: Okay I have,, a ton. But if I had to pick just one all time favorite it'd be Red Country by Joe Abercrombie
Why is this your favorite?: Its incredibly written, heart wrenchingly tragic and hilarious at the same time, and the perfect culmination to one of my absolute favorite characters in fiction (I won't say who cos that in itself is a spoiler if you haven't read Joe Abercrombies books)
What genres do you like?: 95% of what I read nowadays is adult fantasy. I sometimes like YA fantasy and contemporary
Fun fact about you: I'm a big dork and reading is pretty much my only hobby (is that sad? kinda lmao)
Anything else?: Nope!!

You should start with his First Law trilogy! The first book is The Blade Itself. If you finish the trilogy you can read the standalones set in the same world, they go Best Served Cold -> The Heroes -> Red Country. And this September a sequel to the first trilogy is coming out :D

I will say though his writing isn't for everyone, it reminds me a lot of the ASOIAF books. Abercrombie books are very graphic, explicit and oftentimes depressing. His whole thing is being super "grimdark" so just be weary if you don't like that kinda thing. If you like YA he also has a YA trilogy but I didn't like it personally (only read the first book). I heard good things from others though!

and thank you for accepting me!! <3
