Welcome to Advanced DCAY!



What’s Advanced DCAY?



ADCAY is an elaboration of the Draw the Character Above You thread, and while it follows the same idea, it is for artists with more experience who are looking to get art close to their skill level in return. This is not meant to exclude artists or to make artists feel bad about their work. Rather, it’s like a massive art trade for artists who put a lot of effort into their work and want the same amount of effort in return.

ADCAY based participation on how much time and effort you put into your art, how much you study anatomy, and knowledge of colour theory. It follows the same idea as the Advanced Oekaki.

How Can I Join?



PLEASE do not just start posting your form. Instead, you must PM zelos, sheena, and hevoyic (all three, not one or the other) with the following form and ADCAY staff will go over your application and let you know if you are accepted or not. Include “ADCAY” in the title.

Do not post if you have not been accepted. Your post will be skipped if you do.

If you are confused, here is what your PM should look like.

Remember, art will not be based on whether it is “good” or “bad.” Staff will look at how you pay attention to anatomy, colour usage, neatness, and effort. Remember, effort is key here!

If you are not accepted initially, don’t feel bad or take it personally! If you request it, you can ask staff to provide critique on how you can improve, and they will let you know! You can always apply again down the road if you feel you have improved!


Note that if you have warnings on/have been banned from DCAY you will not be allowed to participate.

1. In order to participate in ADCAY, you must also partcipate in DCAY, to keep things fair for everyone. For every two claims you take here, you must take a claim on DCAY. It does not matter if they are at the same time, just make sure you are still able to meet the deadlines. This rule is subject to be adjusted as needed.

2. You must finish your own claim before posting again.

3. Your reference that you provide must be clear, legible, and a fullbody. References should also be digital so that correct colours can be retrieved. NSFW references are not allowed, even if the “naughty bits” are censored with a black bar or something similar.

4. You have 14 days to complete your art- no exceptions! It's your responsibility to not claim unless you know you'll be able to complete your art! If we feel it is necessary, this deadline may be tweaked since more work should be going into these claims.

5. Requesting gift art is fine, but you or your friend must own the character that you request art for. (No tryout). If you are requesting gift art, you must add who owns the character to your form.

6. Art must be 300x300 pixels or over, unless you are a pixel artist; then it must be 60x60 pixels or over. The exception to this rule is if the person before you specifically requests dA-sized avatars (which are 50x50).

7. Seeing as this is “Advanced DCAY,” your finished piece should have effort and detail put into it. While a fullbody is recommended, busts are okay, too, under a few conditions. They must be from the neck/shoulders up, not just a shot of the face (unless the user requests an avatar like that). While fullbodies are not required to be shaded, headshots are. Please see the examples after Rule #14 if you are confused.

8. To prevent spam, only claim another post once two forms are posted after you.

9. All art is to be made on unique lines. This means no tracing, bases, etc, even if the base/lineart was created by you.

10. Do not mark this thread. Use the bookmark feature if you need to.

12. While quick-claiming is fine, you must have your reference up within 10 minutes of your post. Other users have the right to skip your claim if you do not get your character's reference up in time!

13. All art pieces must have a clear, solid lineart (unless your piece is lineless/painted, in which case it must still be neat) and MUST be coloured in completely. i.e. the colouring should not be sloppy or go outside the lines. Sketchy art is not allowed.

14. You must post a minimum of TWO characters, though more is recommended. It is also encouraged that your characters are a variety of species, so that the thread doesn’t stop for three days straight, though this is not a requirement.



Examples of "High-Effort" Busts

It has a very distinct style to it that adds to its appeal.
The lines are clean and it includes shading/highlights as
well. In addition, there is more to it than just the char-
acter; leaves and flowers were added as well.

sorry.) Note the clean lines and the detail added to the
fur, as well as the effort put into shading. This was a
piece that took well over three hours.

Both the shading and lines are textured and sty-
lised, but in a way that is visually appealing. This piece
has a "soft" and cohesive look overall, and the eyes pro-
vide an attractice focal point. Compare it with the 3rd
piece on the right, as it is the same character.
Examples of "Low-Effort" Busts


By zelos
This piece is very small, just over the minimum
limit. It is also very simple, with little to no detail added
to the lines. While there is shading, it is little more than
a gradient. This piece probably took an hour.

There isn't actually anything wrong with this piece
other than the fact that it is literally just a headshot. A
bust for ADCAY should consist of the neck/shoulders as
well, not just the face UNLESS a user specifically requ-
ests an icon like that.

There is no shading to this piece, the stripes are
unfocused and messy, and the markings on the muzzle
should probably be smooth as they don't flow well.
Given that it is a transparent bust, it also shouldn't
end quite so abruptly. A bust should more or less be
"floating" unless there is a background to make it look
like a scene.
