100% Chinese here. I'm probably the weirdo here because I actually pretty much speak Mandarin fluently, can type, and read adult-ish level novels (not that I want to). But I was never formally taught (okay, when I was 5, I went to a Mando school taught by Canto teachers. Let's just say I never went back, mostly due to the traditional characters). The strangest part about me is that I can't write. My parent's call it chicken scratch - aka 狗爬(字) - not sure how formal that is though.

For those wanting to learn Chinese, please know that it is a pretty hard language. Your four tones describe entirely different things, one of which could potentially be offensive (thinkin' of many here xD). Pronunciation is key (I never learned "Chinese Grammar", I just use my knowledge from daily converse and Chinese subtitles), and practice makes perfect. Finally, I do suggest speaking the language out loud, especially to a parent/friend that knows the language. Learning it over the internet is often challenging

    歡迎所有的新成員!
    我同意,中文是個相當難學的語言。 但如果你嘗試學中文實際上其實是很容易的,我只是在說好講而已。 xD

for those who don't understand/read chinese:

welcome all the new members here!
I agree, chinese is a hard language to learn. but if you try it can actually be pretty easy to learn, i'm just talking about speaking chinese not writing or reading. xD

您好!(Google Translate ahaha)
I'm 100% Chinese and yet I cannot write/speak Mandarin Chinese. I can speak Cantonese, since my family is from the Guangdong province so I'd just like some help with learning the basics of how to write it. I mean, of course it's going to be hard since I've never learned Mandarin and most of the time Google Translate uses Mandarin. As a child, I've kinda been enthusiastic to learn since I thought it was a really cool concept, but over the years I've kinda stopped practicing and the extent of my Chinese writing is the numbers from 1-10 (and even I don't remember all of it), my Chinese name, and 'up' and 'down'. I could really use some help on reviewing and learning some basic things. Thank you!

edit; I've actually been to Hong Kong 3 times and my family and I are planning to go a 4th time soon, as my mom is from Hong Kong. I've been to the mainland the 2nd time I went. Just wanted to share that xD

您好!
The thing that really irks me about Cantonese is that there isn't a "proper" written form for it. The written form of the way it's spoken is filled with so many English letters in replacement of those non-existent characters it's almost comical! (Eg. "快d啦“)

The thing about Chinese is that it uses characters, and there isn't an alphabet for it. If you don't practice or use it much, you're bound to forget! The best way to review and learn the language is to keep speaking, keep reading and writing it; we're all happy to help should you want any!

As someone who lives in Hong Kong: what do you think of Hong Kong? :3

    谢谢您。

I mostly read Children books, which are the easiest :)

And I'm lucky because I have quite a few Chinese friends willing to help me out.

    @momoi

I think Cantonese is really difficult! I often go to HongKong for sport competitions and I find it very hard to understand people there, where I live the locals are very patient and kind, and always willing to help me when I can't talk all that well.

I think it is a lot like Svel said, you need to practise every day speaking, reading and writing. But I am sure many people here would like to help you improve :)

Cantonese is definitely harder to pick up than Mandarin. There around 9 sounds in Cantonese, as opposed to the 4 sounds in Mandarin. Luckily, English is also one of the official languages in Hong Kong, so if you're struggling with cantonese, and you're in Hong Kong, that could work as well!
