I hope this is right. (hiragana)

(It's supposed to say, I'm a cat... or something like that.

I've been learning for a few months now w/ a professional teacher.

The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

? I thought "I am a cat" would be
私は猫です。
Also こんにちは!始めまして、みんなさん。私は日本語を本当に話したい。I've only been self taught so far, using the internet and various smaller sources, but I've become very wary of the internet ever since this guy from Japan said that some website just completely taught me an incorrect conjugation once. :/ So I sort of stopped there. I'd really like to start again with some more sound resources though. I'm considering getting a book or textbook of some sort. What do you guys think, is that a good idea or should I save my money and if so what's a good reliable website?
(Whoo, sorry for that long introduction!)

私は猫 and 私は猫です are both correct! The first is more informal because it drops the です
話 However, is not the は character you're looking for.
Both can be pronounced "ha" but the first one is the kanji related to "speech"
The second is the sentence topic making particle C:

As for learning from books, I highly recommend Genki I & II to start with!
Buy the textbook and the workbook! They come with CD's for listening exercises
The setup is really easy to understand and the way they structure it makes a lot of sense!

If you're looking for more advanced studying, there is Tobira, which is just an intense ordeal

    Hello!
I'm trying to learn Japanese, and it's a slow road when you're a self taught person XD
I have a pretty good natural grasp of languages, but I've had to drop anything I knew from other languages I know, such as English and Spanish.
My current vice is memorizing the kana, but I've got the IME installed which makes it super easy to type!
I think what will be most beneficial is interacting with other people who speak the language, so expect to see me around!
    I'm kinda a language nerd.
plus also forgive me if i get stuff wrong

マドリンさん初めまして!I have a few revisions for your sentence, if you're interested!

Ohayou gozaimasu is actually written おはようございます- pay attention to the "hayo" instead of "haio" spelling C:
and also the "za ざ" instead of "sa さ"
The "wa" particle is also actually written with the "ha" character は
これ "kore" means "this," it would be more natural to say "watashi" 「わたし(私)」in this case owo/
And then lastly your name Madelyn (sorry for spelling) should be written in katakana as a foreign word: マドリン
So all together: おはようございます!!!私はマドリンです。
