I imagine the crystal growths are from a curse... and they only started gaining the blue markings/eyes after the curse. BUT it's ur character do whatever you want with them!!
They aren't just an average wolf. They're a Dire Wolf! So they're HUGE. And tall! [On a side note I've always wanted to design a Sabertooth Tiger and Dire Wolf pair since I saw somethin abt them being rivals back in the day, though who knows since they're extinct lol]
