Nope, they're just cute little collectible items that you can use in dress-ups if you'd like.
They are, however, based off existing pet designs! So for every animal egg there exists an actual pet that looks like it c:

hmm another question--

all the pets that we can buy with token eggs....
are they like many pets here, where they may grow into different variations? or will each one produce the same grown up pet??

Right now all the token pets that are available are fully grown, but we do sometimes get growing pets from token trade-ins as well.^^
You can easily check if a pet grows or not by going on its profile; if the "growth" stat says "full-grown" then the pet won't change.

Currently every token trade-in gives you the exact pet you see on the event page, but we also often get "mystery boxes" from which you can get multiple possible outcomes.
If you want to get a good example of what the prize pool for an easter event may look like once everything is released, feel free to scroll through the first post on last year's thread.

Does anyone know what the banner limit usually is around, I can't remember.. And the easter events, does they usually go on for like two weeks? Can't remember anything anymore it seems like..

Nobody's hit it yet, but it's been raised from 200, so it's possible it's at 250.
The last gift is posted on Easter (the 1st this year) and then we usually get a couple of days to keep hunting and then some more days to trade in any tokens (:
