n inr/commando corps military sniper isidora yáñez. the youngest of th
ree children, roland was born shortly before his father was thrown into
a turbulent public scandal and massive legal troubles due to his proble
matic career and vituperative reputation. as one of the most acclaimed
and august directors in the rising entertainment industry, sigmund's fall
from grace was heavily blazoned. his relationship with his long-term gir
lfriend and mother of his children ended as a result of his transgression
s, and he moved out of the household when his children were young XV
II. roland endured a lonely and very much restricted childhood. his mot
her was overprotective and controlling and allowed her children little f
reedom over concerns of their safety and well-being when she was not
around. roland had few friends growing up and was not allowed to hang
out with other children unsupervised, be it at sleepovers or simply goin
g to the local mall to wander around. he spent a majority of his time al
one on his mother's estate with his siblings and apart from going to sch

forced to act mature beyond his years and delve into past-times that a

relationship with his mother - even from a young age - was
strained and impersonal. often busy with her demanding ca
reer, she had little time for her children and was constantly
critical, demanding and aloof towards them. the yáñez chil
dren most often found themselves under the care of family
friends or their paternal aunt meralith berling, the wife of
the frigid and harsh thomos berling who has held the title
of warden over the country's most notorious prison, cidma
mine, for decades XX. when roland was twelve years old,
his father made a reappearance in his children's lives in w
hat appeared to be an effort to establish a bond with the
m and mend their relationships. unsurprisingly, he proved
to be a poor father figure. he was much more concerned
about competing with isidora for their children's affection
s and as such, he did not bother himself with proper disci
pline, guidance and structure. he enabled bad behavior a
nd even encouraged it in an effort to win favor XXI. sigmu
nd exposed his children to the underworld of new hollywo
od's disgraced and tarnished celebrities, an action that lat
er led to his sons developing dangerous habits that contin
ued to affect them into adulthood. due to his father's infl
uence, roland began to do poorly in school. his delinquen
cy led him to be expelled from catholic school where he p
roceeded to fail a grade in public school. his unstable and
wild nature further strained he and his mother's relations
hip although like always, his father's influence did nothing
but make roland feel resentful towards his mother for wha
t he believed was her choosing her career/reputation over
her family. this belief grew stronger the longer roland suff
ered without outside intervention XXII. by the time roland
graduated high school, his father was no longer in his life d
ue to frequent arguments between the two and the fact bo
th were spiraling in their party monster lifestyles. with no
clear direction in life, roland decided to follow his older b
rother, leon, into the army XXIII. his first two years in the
army were, unsurprisingly, chaotic and much of a blur.

were victims of an ambush led by the leader of the notorious skinner gang, skull face.
leon died in the attack; roland survived albeit with grievous injuries. their negligence
to properly adhere to local travel warnings as well as his brother's neglect to properl
y update and service his armor suit ultimately led to these series of tragic events XX
V. following his brother's death, roland was granted medical leave and returned to h
is family's estate for extended at-home medical care. it took him over six months to r
eturn to a healthy and relatively stable physical state, a process that both his mother
and sister aided him with. upon returning to the military, roland took a different rout
e underneath the guidance of his mother; he was accepted into the united states arm
y sniper course. his mother used her influence to help him get in by expunging the cri
minal record he garnered during his teenage years, essentially transforming him into
the ideal candidate despite his poor mental state at the time. despite their rocky rel
ationship, his mother went out of her way to care for him following leon's death, a s
ign of her own crumbling mental health as her family continued to drift apart XXVI. f
ollowing his graduation from sniper school, roland was sorted into the 1034 tactical r
econnaissance field and marksmen scout sniper platoon. headed by arturo haithe, an
old colleague of his mother's, the 1034 sniper platoon served not only the inr but the
commando corps. the platoon's purpose was to provide detailed surveillance from a c
oncealed position and, if necessary, to reduce the enemy's combat ability by neutrali
zing high-value targets and demoralizing the enemy by intervening in their battle str
ategies. in other cases, the platoon would be assigned to gather enemy intel by acce
ssing dangerous points considered unreachable by ordinary soldiers. their platoon - a
long with many others - was the backbone of grounded military forces XXVII. roland
had a difficult time adjusting to his new life in a sniper platoon. quick to fall back in

to old habits, his relationship with his mother and sister fell
apart as a result. unable to process what happened to his b
rother as well as the trauma of his childhood, he suffered i
n his early twenties as a result. he and his head lieutenant
were quick to get off on the wrong foot due to roland's neg
ligence and indifference towards their line of work. around
this time, roland would meet his long-term girlfriend jazmí
n seco XXVIII. roland's self-destructive behaviors began to c
ease as he grew older and gradually got himself back on tra
ck with the help of others. the scathing reality of his caree
r did not become any less difficult to face, though. frequen
tly sent into bandit-infested areas like the blood zone to el
iminate enemy targets, roland and his fellow teammates w
ere often subjected to endure long and strenuous weeks in
order to find their targets in areas where law and order ha
s died. the brutality and violence enacted upon the surrou
nding settlers and landscape by bandits in these areas had
heavy effects on the soldiers forced to look upon it. over t
he years, roland has lost many comrades to wasteland viol
ence as well as the battles going on inside these soldiers' h
eads because of their line of work. attempts made by their
superiors and the military to guarantee the safety of sniper
platoons quickly grew ineffective once bandit groups such
as wulfgang began to realize that it was sniper platoons t
aking out their high ranks. within time, bandits in large a
nd organized gangs began to track and go after platoons.
their goal was not to capture but to kill XXIX. these effo
rts eventually came to head when roland's first lieutenant
was murdered by a trio of rogue bandits in october of 243

was a newborn after stumbling upon her in a poache

XXXVI. upon later joining the rebellion, valentina will
become a resource scout by helping the rebels retrieve
valuable data, supplies and resources from not only co
nclave shipments but wastelander towns and supply dr
ops. her lengthy experience hunting and scavenging th
e wasteland will be a tremendous help with her duties,
as she already has the base knowledge of how to scout
and discover resources that are not readily available to
the wandering eye. joining the rebellion will be a huge
turning point in valentina's life. it will give her a new s
ense of purpose and direction, and show her what her
true destiny is: helping other people. the rebellion wil
l be a perfect outlet for valentina by granting her a wa
y to contribute to a cause greater than herself, and ho
nor the memories of her parents' and extended kin who
died as a result of the conclave's carelessness. this cha
nge will be apparent even before she and her cousin re
ach the badlands, though for she will not hinder in their
journey to deliver the tape to the rebels, even with con
clave dogs hot on their heels. what starts as initial wari
ness and caution of the future will morph into a strong s
ense of direction and dedication, as valentina soon grow
s well-aware of how desirable the stolen tape is to the g
overnment. she will become determined to deliver the t
ape, no matter what obstacles pop up along the way.

superficiality can only go so far. deep down, kai is brimming with insecurities,
jealousy and instability. having grown up in a household where his opinions an
d voice were promptly shut down, kai struggles to express himself fluidly and

s unconventional behaviors can easily unnerve strangers. kai is not only imper
sonal upon first encounters but awkward. born and raised in a harsh family, k
ai grapples to express himself. he is a creative person but his ingenious ideas
are often shut down by his parents. truthfully, his parents are the root of why
kai acts the way he does and why he not only struggles to express and assert
himself but why he has such issues maintaining long-term relationships and s
parking lasting friendships. kai lacks the proper communication skills to expl
ain why he feels the way he does and what he thinks about certain matters.
he swallows his emotions and troubles until they reach a boiling point.

anis family is anything but a symbol of what a picturesque household i

his brother's advice. their quarrels eventually come to a head when kai's sister-
in-law and niece are killed by gunfire in an attack initiated by a wastelander cr
azed with android hysteria. it is an indirect consequence of kai's rising careless
ness and hubris. his brother cuts off contact with him not long afterwards. thei
r relationship never goes back to the way it was for mateo is captured and mur
dered by the rebellion after requesting to be relocated to a different sector. hi
s death directly correlates with a massive attack launched by a network of rebe
l extremists that is meant to target high-profile conclave officials. over three h
undred are killed in the span of a few weeks, executed by rebel radicals such a
s captain declan waters. it is the largest attack initiated by the rebellion again
st the conclave since the massacre of fort snow XXIII. kai's rise to power does n
ot stop with mateo's death. within time, congressional authorizations and exec
utive action declare adub as the central powerhouse over military action invol
ving the investigations into enemy treason. this involves the usage of inquisitor
s, as well as expanding adub's ranks and resources. following a surge of inter
est in the branch, the number of commissioned officers are increased, with the
branch going from just one acting general to five . kairos is promoted to one of
these positions XXIV. kai's exploits and ventures as an acting general will be fel
t by the wasteland and its inhabitants for years to come. prior to his promotio
n, kai's original ideologies and viewpoints towards the wasteland and its popul
ation (most of which consisted of the basis that wastelanders were not inhere
ntly subpar and simply needed to be introduced to technology in a appropriat
e manner in order to achieve the desired society) were beginning to slowly cr
umble. after his brother's demise, though, his mental and physical health plum

essed with finding his brother's killers as well as garnering as
much control as he can over operation bloodbird, kai fails to
notice the signs of growing corruption, bribery, violence and
self-serving being committed by his fellow comrades and sub
ordinates. truthfully, though, he is just as guilty as the rest o
f them. kai's obsession with the rebellion goes beyond just fi
nding the rebels who killed his brother. he wants total contro
l and autonomy over operation bloodbird as a whole; become
s known for targeting faultless wasteland citizens in order to
draw rebels out of their hiding spaces XXV. kai's deluisonal
ventures out in the wasteland eventually land kairos into f
alling victim to a rebel trap. he miraculously survives the en
counter but suffers near-fatal third degree burns. following
extensive medical treatment, kai acquires a new set of arm
or to help lessen the severity of his wounds and shield his v
ulnerability. his armor is an intricate suit consisting of a nec
k gaiter, a voice processor, a mechanical ventilator, an armo
red breastplate and durable multi-ply fabrics to cover his bu
rns. there are lens in his helmet's eye-sockets that calibrate
and accent colors to accommodate his damaged eyesight an
d enhance his field of view; his helmet also helps pump air
into his sensitive lungs. there are various tech models on h
is suit to regulate his vital system. he weighs over three hu
ndred pounds and stands a little over seven feet tall when
he is in the suit XXVI. kai's mental stability continues to pl

justice for kai's actions, and their feud will be one of a
complicated and grief-stricken nature, as philip will ult
imately be forced to put down his only surviving brothe
r who he failed to protect and properly nourish a relati
onship with as a youth. the only time he and kai will e
ver properly bond and see eye-to-eye for a time is afte
r mateo's death, when both of them try desperately to
locate their brother's remains without any success XXV
III. following kai's ascension in the military, his skills wh
en it comes to properly wielding a plasma sword will o
nly grow greater with time. eventually, he will be able
to deflect not only other plasma swords but bullets an
d various shrapnel ammo with ease, making him a dead
ly opponent to face in the open battlefield. his mechan
ical suit will only increase his efficiency, too. with incre
ased strength, perception and stature, kai will grow to
be a menacing force of strength, an opponent one wou
ld not be too keen to reckon with XXIX. when out of h
is suit, kai will don a silver mask to hide his injuries f
rom public view. originally, he does this to not frighten
those around him but this will eventually shift into kai
not wanting others to realize the extent of his weakne
sses, as he will grow distrustful of those around him.

rooms depicting upsetting childhood memories and ev

s or even the cemetery that mateo and his family are
buried in. over time, the dream begins to shift and ch
ange where his brother's appearance - youthful and he
althy in the beginning - start to reflect the injuries he
bore during his final days and in some memory sequen
ces, kai begins to take the place of his father, signalin
g that kai is going to take his father's place & will con
tinue to fuel their family's generational trauma XXVII.
kai's unhinged behavior and actions will not go withou
t consequences. following the not-so-discreet murder
of xander loukanis and the disappearance of ishaan p
arekh, kai becomes a target of the fbi led by his olde
r brother, philip loukanis. his brother will grow deter
mined to bring kai to justice for the suffering he's bro
ught onto the wasteland as well as crimes he's comm
itted against conclave officials. boldly enough, he wi
ll execute the war crimes act, a law that has not bee
