As a health class assignment, students are required to take care of a baby simulator for 3 weeks. The teacher doesn’t give the students a choice of partners, instead pairing them up at random. Much to Muse A’s dismay, they’re matched up with Muse B, someone they absolutely can’t stand. Muse B isn’t pleased about it either, since they feel the same way about Muse A. Every decision they make as fake parents is a struggle from the very beginning, particularly scheduling who takes care of the baby when and for how long. Muse A and Muse B are forced to compromise and spend time together with the baby for the sake of the project, which requires cooperative decision-making and documentation of their progress. Over the course of the project, Muse A and Muse B start to realize that their partner isn’t as horrible as they once thought. They’re actually kind of fun to be around, even given the circumstances.

walking down the crumbling sidewalk of her street, sydney thought to herself what a wreck her surroundings were, and how they almost reflected what she felt inside. you see, her parents were in the middle of a nasty divorce, complete with legal issues, fighting every night and day, and the whole nine. her car, a beautiful black convertible, got totaled in an accident which was her fault for texting her boyfriend whilst he was flinging excuses left & right about why he was with another girl that one night. her 15 year old sister was pregnant with a druggie deadbeat's baby, and she was convinced it was meant to be and god is the one that made her a mom. oh honey, the redhead thought to herself, god wouldn't touch you with a ten foot pole.

reaching the intersection in the center of town, sydney jammed one hand into the crosswalk button while clutching her last pack of cigarettes in the other. she had told herself no more after this one -- too expensive and bad for you anyway. she looked behind herself, paranoid, because you never know what could happen around these parts, young women looking like herself were an easy target. you know, mental breakdowns make for a cluttered brain, and cluttered brains typically carry large amounts of narcotics and cash in their pockets. she felt in her heart it was time to leave -- to where, don't know. but this place wasn't home to her anymore, and honestly anything would be better than this wannabe suburban trash palace.

eventually the last 2001 volkswagen left the intersection and pulled into the grocery store, and it was her turn to cross. looking both ways, of course, because you never know who wants to beat the light and be the first one into the crappy diner or drugstore. sydney waltzed into the diner, just looking for a coffee to start her day. she figured that if she's giving up cigarettes, she might as well go get addicted to caffeine -- gotta have something to depend on these days. she had a long day ahead of her, working half as a bartender and the other half the thirsty, desperate middle aged men's flirt for a few hours while they black out just to go home and tolerate their third wives.

"thank you," the ginger tipped and left the diner, going to sit on the bus station bench to drink it and watch as the passersby hurry past in various states of stress. funny thing is, that there weren't many homeless in this town, as the cost of living in fake-suburbia was just about as dirt cheap as it got. that, and even if there was, they'd know better not to panhandle as nobody has extra cash, it's all spent on their poison of choice. eventually amanda had finished her drink right as the bus arrived. she stepped aboard and shoved the fare into the small plastic box mounted on the dash, throwing the cup away in the garbage can anchored to the railing. she took a seat in a row of three with no one beside her, put in her earbuds and tuned out on her way into the city.

Muse A is an employee in a small coffee shop. The shop is personable, and the employees know the regulars well, and would often have their drinks made by the time the customers would enter the shop. Muse B is another in need of a summer job, who applies for a job at the shop. When Muse B is hired, Muse A is tasked with training them in. After a few shifts alone together, Muse A and Muse B bond significantly during training. Muse B is clever and figures things out quickly, and Muse A is gentle and patient, making Muse B drinks and giving them advice. Even after the training shifts are finished, Muse A and Muse B have several shifts together, and tend to work the same hours. Since both are some of the few employees who are willing to work closes, they both find themselves in an empty shop, talking and cleaning to keep themselves busy. In time, a romantic bond forms, but company policy bans a relationship between employees spending time together outside of work or forming a romantic relationship. Will they risk their jobs to be together? Sneaking kisses in the parking lot after closing and trying to suppress their feelings when other employees are around? Or will there be lingering feelings left unacted upon?
