history;
kithood
morningstep was born to pinewhisker and eveningstrike. her parents only wanted one kit, so they could have a close bond with them and give them more attention than a full litter of kits. it somehow came as a shock to them when two kits were born, those kits being morningstep and her brother larkcall. morningstep was the second born of the litter, so her parents had a natural hatred for her because in their eyes, she should have never been born. it was debated among the two if they should kill off morningstep, but basic morals told them no, they shouldn't kill a helpless kit. so instead, they acted like she was never born. they favoured larkcall, the firstborn of the litter. they treated him like normal parents would treat their kit, they loved him and cherished him, all while ignoring their other kit. morningstep often played alone, batting a mossball by herself because no other kit wanted to play with her. at the time, she didn't know exactly what a 'mistake' was, but she very much felt like one. larkcall only played with his sister when told to by an elder or a sympathetic queen, because 'no kit deserved to be alone'.
apprenticeship
when the two were apprenticed, morningstep tried to strengthen her bond with larkcall. the two were siblings, so why couldn't they be friends? she tried to convince their mentors to go on patrols or train together, but they decided that it would be best if the two were separated. larkcall certainly did not want to engage with a mistake.
that was when the rumors started.
it was whispered that morningstep was unstable, that she didn't really know how to act, that she was wrong in the head and shouldn't even become a warrior. the senior warriors turned their noses up at this, pretending that they didn't hear the lies that the younger warriors, apprentices, and even kits engaged with. morningstep faced constant judgement, and cats even sometimes approached her and asked her what was wrong, and how she could fix it. no-one wanted a mentally unstable warrior.
it should have been obvious that larkcall was at the bottom of this, but morningstep refused to believe that her lovely brother would ever say such a thing. it became more apparent, however, as whenever morningstep passed larkcall and his group of friends, she would be laughed at, and many called her 'brainless'.
this was when the real abuse started.
when she was alone with her brother, which happened rarely yet very often, larkcall would circle morningstep, laughter in his tone as he mocked everything she did, from how she spoke to how she walked, how she hunted to how she fought, how she was ignored by other cats, the outcast of the clan. he lashed out at her, hatred spilling from his mouth like a waterfall. larkcall even went as far as to tell the current leader that morningstep was behind in her training, and didn't deserve to become a warrior.
adulthood
morningstep was made a warrior along with her brother, to his dismay. he used this information and turned around, telling the cats that the leader favoured morningstep, that they thought she was better than him. his followers revolted, and cornered morningstep, spitting hatred at her and cursing at her. the mob was eventually broken up by a senior warrior, but there was no sympathy in his eyes as he looked at morningstep.
the forsaken she-cat retreated to the nursery, where she would often help the queens and play with the kits. it seemed like the queens were the only ones who felt sympathy for her, so she stayed and they would listen to her. morningstep became friends with an expecting queen, frozenwhisper, but the other she-cat died when kitting. morningstep then took in her one and only kit, and named him coldkit, after his mother. though she didn't nurse the little tom, she visited him everyday, and loved him like a mother would love her own kit. he was perhaps the closest she would get to having a kit.
many thought that morningstep couldn't handle taking care of a kit, as she was too unstable to do so, but she tried to ignore them and raise the young kit to be kind and gentle.
one day, morningstep was out on patrol with larkcall. she wasn't sure how it happened, but she went anyways, hoping to talk to him and try and clear everything up. they were far into their conversation when larkcall scented a fox. the russet creature emerged, most likely insane from pain as they were bleeding from their side. in a frenzy they attacked, messy but deadly. morningstep was frozen on the spot, but larkcall leaped into action. he fought his hardest, but after a particularly hard hit from the fox, he dropped to the ground, dead. morningstep did only what she could do, and dragged his body back to camp. she tried to explain that he was killed by the fox, but nobody believed her, and they called her a murderer. they tried to kick her out of the clan, but they had no proof and she was excused from the trial.
