Oekaki Rules and Information

All rules regarding forum conduct, child-friendly content, and art use/creation also apply to the Oekaki, but there are also some specific rules that apply only to the Oekaki forums.

Oekaki Rules

Keep comments polite, helpful, and relevant to the artwork. Do not start discussions or debates. Critique is allowed if requested by the artist but insults are not welcome.
Make an effort to post your drawing in the correct board. Continued intentional misuse of the forum categories may result in disciplinary action. You can view descriptions of what each board is for in the forum index.
Don't spam the Oekaki. Your drawing should show intention and a modest amount of effort. We do not allow random scribbles, simple shapes, or empty/solid color canvases, nor should you post advertisements for trades, streams, or other threads. Covered drawings must still follow the oekaki rules and have art visible, even if they are WIPs.
Don't create Oekaki topics just to share art you've created elsewhere. Art drawn in another program should be posted in the appropriate board (example: non-Oekaki adoptable characters go in User-made Adoptables).
Don't make Oekaki drawings with just words or puzzles written on them. The Oekaki is for sharing artwork, not for displaying a written message or playing a forum game.
If using an editable you must follow the artist's rules. This may include leaving a signature/watermark layer on the final image, or may prevent you from selling colored-in versions as adoptables.
Don't post blank canvases in the contests board. Contests may be posted there only if you provide a recognizable lineart or relevant background for contestants to use in their entries. If you don't need people to edit something in particular, go to the Regular Art Competitions Board to create your topic. You can still make a rule that your contestants make their entries in the Oekaki boards if you prefer it that way. For more specific rules about contests please view this thread.
Specific rules apply to the the Adoptable boards on the Oekaki:
- The Oekaki is for making and sharing art in the Oekaki program. If you’d like to use another program to create your adoptables, please post them in user-made adopts or character design shops. “Cover adoptables” are not permitted, except for “milestone” adoptables in which case the cover must still follow Oekaki rules.
- You may sell Oekaki art/adoptables for CS pets/items/C$, allowed offsite currency, and dA points/real currency. Keep in mind that CS staff are unable to assist with transactions gone wrong involving other site currency or real currency.
  - Any real currency discussion must occur offsite; please link to where you can be contacted. Do not discuss real currency transactions on CS.
- Post your adoptables in the correct board. If you want to create just a few adopts, use the Adoptables 1: Independent/One-Off board. If you want to create a closed species, community, and intend to make many adoptables, use the Adoptables 2: Closed Species/Communities board.
- Follow the rules outlined by the adopt creator(s). Many species owners have their own rules that you must follow in order to successfully participate in their species, so be sure to read their rules before posting. CS staff may enforce a thread owner’s rules if necessary. Note that species rules may not circumvent our official site rules.
- All Adoptable Oekaki submissions must be judged no later than 1 month after their end date. Staff may intervene if the user fails to select a winner after 1 month. Failure to judge a contest after being reminded may result in a board warning.
- Users are bound to the species rules published at the time that the user receives the adopt. If a species owner adds a new rule, they cannot punish players for breaking the rule before it was added. This includes revoking or rehoming adopts. Updated adoptable rules apply only to adopts made after the rule was published.
- Paid-entry raffles are not permitted. You may not charge users for the chance to win something.
- Competitions with entries requiring artistic/creative effort must end with a winner. The promised prize (in this case the character design) must be awarded at the end of the contest to an entrant, so be sure you want to give the character away. You may only change your mind if there are no forms that meet the competition requirement.
- If you want to transfer your species to another player, then you will need to notify CS staff beforehand. More information on transferring thread ownership can be found here.

Woah??? I wasn't actually expecting that sketch to help THIS much.... Wait like what 😭

I also used to make the ear start from wayy to high, now I know it sorta starts at the curve for the eyes. I also just thought that if I tried to do all the curves that the skull has or like to show where the muzzle started it'd turn into a mess but this.. this actually helped a WHOLLEEEE lot. i haven't forgotten about this base i made, i'm gonna finish it eventually lol. but for now this is a redesign of her! does anybody have name ideas? all i know is that she's a crystal pony x kirin. because of her mixed heritage, her horn is disfigured and she struggles to control her magic like other unicorns. she can handle smaller spells and likes performing little tricks, but anything more complicated than teleportation is pretty unstable - despite this, though, she does have a surplus of magic. it's quite frustrating for her.

she's also, like, a REALLY distant cousin of cadance, hence the similar-ish colours. like they're so distantly related that she doesn't even know it. she's just a common pony, which leads me to my next question: what do you guys think her actual talent should be ? 😭😭 i like her design i just don't know what to do with her!!

i realise how edgy and vent-y this looks, but it's really not. i was just thinking of all of the people that have inspired me in my art journey and how they are all gone or rarely post.

i'm gonna namedrop here out of respect because i think it's important to acknowledge my roots. idk if any of these guys will see this but you all really inspired me when i was starting out. <3

rebel, ranger, charli, kami, acro, kay, and pickles all inspired me SO much. some of you guys are still a bit active, most of you aren't. i'm happy for them that they've moved on to greener pastures but it also hurts because i don't know if any of 'em are still artists. faent (ranger) especially inspired me, he's the reason i started drawing eyebrows on my horses xD i love looking at all of my old friends' art and comparing our pieces. if you look closely, you'll notice some similarities. some of them are coincidences, some may not be. idk. i really looked up to all of these people and i just got a bit sentimental all of a sudden. i highly recommend anyone following me to check out their stuff. kay still posts every so often so i totally think you guys should follow her :)

I recognize all of those legends and I'm honored to be among them but yeah, you figure they got busy but you hope they're doing well and kept doing what they loved. I know that's the case for me at least :3 but even though we haven't seen a few of them in a while, I'm glad to have all those happy memories of interactions and the art they've left here as a light on this website. -v-

oh man, both of those names sound perfect for her!! i totally get your confliction x) honestly i find that using both names while writing bios for my ocs helps me figure out which one works better, if you get what i mean! i could absolutely see both of those names working for her though so it's really hard ;0; i love your art too, it's SO cute!!

OMG SO CUTE!!!?? I love her colors so much and your style is adorable!! And for the name, if you're looking for something more "magical" sounding, I personally think Sugar Peach might be a better fit. They both fit her so well, don't get me wrong, but Sugar Peach kind of makes me think of "Sugar Plum", and that puts a sparkly, fairy-esque image in my head. If that makes any sense? Again, both sound super nice and that's just my opinion ^^

If you're an artist, PLEASE HELP ME

any tips you have for Farel/Anthro or even Humanoid for that matter I would GREATLY appreciate them ^^

I'm trying to be able to draw Anthos and animals facing forward but for some odd reason it's a really huge challenge for me. I typically only draw humans so I'm trying to really focus on animals right now. And I feel very limited not being able to draw Anthros and stuff soo I'm trying my best to learn

Main Struggles:

1. Fluff/Fur & Hair on Farels
Any time I draw fur it either looks absolutely terrible and doesn't even look like fur or just like- a spikey... Idek. I've tried to learn fur so many times but it never really works out for me. I don't even know what I'm doing wrong so, if anyone has any tips or knows whats going on I'd appreciate it ^^

On that same note, Hair on Ferals are just- yeah like that's why I can't draw Horses. It just looks so incredibly odd and doesn't really fit. Showing the hair flow to the other side or how it goes over the ears and how it's attached to the head. I can't get any of it.

2. Front Facing
I'd like to think I'm at least decent at drawing animals from a side view, but when it comes to their face (or even their body for that matter) from a front view it- just never works out.I don't understand how to draw the muzzle from a front view, and even if it's like slightly slanted I still don't understand how to show the depth where it's not just a flat face. Down at the bottom with the Cow, and dogs I thought that they actually looked okay and it showed the depth pretty well. But as soon as I removed the guidelines it looked like an absolute mess.

3. Bald Head
A lot of times my creatures look very... Odd? Because I can't draw fur. But this is just...weird.

I don't think it's due to a lack of fur since you know...Animals normally don't have fur there but for some reason it just looks peculiar. Maybe I'm not making the ear big enough? I'm not sure.

Proportions
When drawing guide lines it's really annoying because I always have to go back in and fix it or redo it. I always make the head much too big and the body too long. Is this something I can measure to make sure that they're the right proportions or is this something I just have to learn how to control and get used to over time?

I made a quick sketch on what I normally focus when drawing front view ferals/anthros

it's also a matter of getting used to it, learning and improving as you draw more and more. seeing irl references of bone structures are always helpful too! I would say fur doesn't matter, it's more of the definition of bones and fat in a body.
It also depends on what species you're drawing! For example, here is a front view of a shark anthro I did!

Oh thanks a lot ^^ This is super helpful actually. Irl pictures can be super helpful but to be honest I get lost a lot when looking at realistic images. But I've been practicing a lot of that too. (it always turns out terribly tho 😭) So, if I understand correctly, I need to pay more attention to the overall shape of the face and where the bones are located. The mouth was also a bit of a hardship but hopefully it will come along at least better once I get the rest of that down :3
