Tapping my foot impatiently, I glanced up at the bright lights gleaming overhead. I listened to the hushed murmurs of the crowd squeezing into the tiny space. Finally, the teacher stepped up. “Attention! Class! Quiet down!” He hissed, the green veins around his eye pumping with adrenaline. “Now, please stay quiet as Zó̱o takes the stage,” he grumbled, stepping into the gaggle of children. We watched as a male, tall and awkward, took the place of Dáskalos. He had a huge creature-- a bird, perhaps (judging by the wings and squawking of the large creature) perched on his arm, on top of a glove. Without anything more to say, her immediately threw questions at us. “Does anyone know what this animal is?” He asked, looking around. Only one person raised their hand. Obviously, she was called on. “Poulí tou Theoú!” She exclaimed. “Correct! The God Enérgeia takes the form of a poulí tou Theoú.” Zó̱o said.
I looked up into the bird’s eyes. The crystal blue eyes of the ugly creature’s eyes showed pain and misery. It was quite obvious that she didn’t want to be here. It’s huge wings were unnaturally pressed against her chest. Her tail of fire was clinging to Zó̱o’s glove. Her creamy eyes weren’t locked on anything. She’s… blind? I assumed. She was jumpy, and scars covered her body. I couldn’t help but feel sympathy for her. I jumped as someone beside me tapped my arm. I glanced their way, and saw him pointing to Zó̱o. “Ms. Igéti̱s? Any day now.” He scolded. I hadn’t a clue where he’d gotten my name, but it didn’t matter. “Pardon me?” I muttered. “I said: Would you mind getting me its cage?” He growled, jolting the bird. It squawked, trying aimlessly to flap it’s wings, but failed terribly. I nodded, hands clenched in fists of rage. I shouldered my way up to the front of the crowd, and grabbed the cramped metal cage. Zó̱o shoved the unattractive bird into the cage. He pushed the bird against my chest. His open eye glared into mine as a smirk crossed his face. He knew I wanted to scream and yell at him, but no. I don’t know what would happen, but sure wouldn’t find out. “Come. Let me show you were we keep the animals.’’ I rolled my eyes. “Whatever.” I growled, stepping away as he touched my long, frizzy hair.
I slowly followed Zó̱o down the stairs. I could hear the rustle of chains and quiet, frantic whispers for help. I immediately regretted the moment I ever agreed to come. I peered down, almost dropping the cage. There were people in shackles, sobbing. They glanced up at me. I held back vomit seeing that both of their eyes were open. It was revolting. The people looked so familiar. I realized with a sickening jolt that I knew each and every one of these people. I held the bird’s cage close to my chest.
“Now,” Zó̱o began, “it‘s your choice. Either you save yourself, or these people.” I stared up, eyes wide. “Wh-what?” I stammered. He just smiled. “We live in a free country!” I objected. It was stupid, I know, but it was the only thing that I could think of. “Yes. One where if you break the law your devoured. And did you really think anything was truly free? Nothing is free. Not even freedom.”
Bluh. Wanted to get that out of my system. Sorry for being so... lengthy for an oekaki, but eh... Whatever. So, I might make a story/comic/role-play about these odd characters of mine. Yay~ I might add more shading, detail, a background and whatnot.
