Crowflight used to belong to a clan, far away from the forest, named Thornclan. There they trained hard, becoming strong, ruthless warriors and hunters. Crowflight's mother was a white cat, while his father was black (with a reddish-brown tint). His sister was born in the same litter as him, a white cat named Whitefeather.
As an apprentice, Crowflight strived for the approval of his father, without success. He would fail to live up to Hawkwing's expectations time and time again, and was scolded repeatedly for being weak, ignorant. Once he was out hunting with his sister, and he and her split up for just a moment. He found her, lying beneath a tree, having fallen. She was had broken a few bones, and took a while to recover. Crowflight was scolded for his stupidity by his father. The young black cat, hurt and dissappointed in himself, could only say "I'm sorry..." to his father's scolding. Hawking answered, "I'm sorry too. Sorry you were ever born." That was the first time Crowflight started to realize how cruel and full of hate his father was.
In a few moons, he caught his father in the forest with his apprentice, the deputy's son. He had killed the young cat, and was standing over the dead body. Crowflight at first was shocked, but then he understood. His father was trying to become the new deputy! He was attacking his son, in hopes to weaken the deputy, so that he could take him down easier. Crowflight snuck away, but not before he saw another one of the clan's apprentices. She had seen the killing.
"Maybe if I kill her.... Just maybe, then he'll love me..." The male thought desperately, and so that was what he did. Swiftly, he killed the apprentice, making just enough noise to startle his father. When Hawkwing found out what he had done, however, he was not grateful, he was mad again! He hissed, and said that Crowflight was always getting in the way, and then he told him to go back to camp. Ashamed, the black male padded sadly back to camp, feeling remorse for killing the young she-cat.
Soon after that, the deputy went missing; but Hawkwing was not allowed to get the rank of deputy, as he had a family, and in their clan only cats with no young kits or mates could be deputy.
It was a few moons after that incident, that Crowflight heard something in the bushes. He had just gotten his warrior name, and was sitting vigil. When he followed the sound (past a thunderpath, and to the edge of a Ravine), he found his father, standing over two bodies. They were Dovepool and Whitefeahter, his mother and sister!
That night, Crowflight and Hawkwing fought on the thunderpath. The young cat killed his father, but was hit by one of the twoleg's monsters. He awoke in a strange building, very white and clean, with a twoleg standing over him. With much difficulty, he escaped the twoleg nest (titled 'E-M-E-R-G-E-N-C-Y V-E-T'). He came upon a pool of water, and only then did he see that one of his eyes was sewn over. He figured the monster did it to him. It was then that he decided he'd never return to his old clan, and start again somewhere new... But the past could not be erased, and he could not forget the monster his father was, and the monster he had developed into.
