I saw a video called "What we saw." in part of that video, the cameraman shows a sign, bent and broken, and then slowly pans to the twin towers, on fire, smoking, obstructed from view by a mountain of debris. That image stuck in my mind until I was compelled to draw it. Albeit a little differently. The twin towers are farther off.
I tried to go for a dream-like effect on the background. The sign is really the only "real" thing, the one thing you can hold on to for sanity. i.e., Whoever is standing in front of the sign is having trouble grasping reality. So they focus on the one constant: a road sign.
This is all a dream. Nothing but a dream. Two mighty buildings shattered, thousands of lives gone in a heartbeat. Nothing makes sense, your mind is whirling. You turn, a large green sign catching your eye. U-turn, World Trade Center. You focus on that, trying to keep your thoughts under control. It's all gone... the world trader center is all gone...
What really sticks in my mind about 9/11 is this: People are still dying from 9/11 today. Cancers, lung disease, respiratory problems... The rescuers and survivors of the attack inhaled highly toxic air swimming with dust, causing them illness. Hundreds more people are part of the casualty of the 3,000 some people.
Flight 93, a brave group who died disrupting a flight that was headed toward the capital. They were going to die anyway, and instead of trying to save themselves, they died with honor. With the phrase: "Let's Roll."
