So You Can Draw Wolves

Postby Klaora » Fri Jul 15, 2011 6:30 am

Yay, fun with opacity~

Alright, let me start of with a disclaimer that I'm not aiming this at anyone in particular, but rather the community as a whole.

So you can draw wolves.
I was hoping not to resort to snarky comments with a poorly drawn example, but I feel this needs to be said. It's not that I have anything against wolves or against you guys drawing wolves, just that I feel that they are FAR too common of a subject.
Often times, I find an amazing artist on here whose work I absolutely adore. I'll go to check out the rest of their gallery and, lo and behold, pages upon pages upon pages of nothing bot wolves, dogs, and canines.
This has also happened with cats and horses as well.
It's fine to like an animal and it's fine to have specialties~ But having a variety in your gallery is going to make you that much better. Don't limit yourself to drawing one thing or in one particular art style. Expand! Try new things, new ways to color, new ways to draw~ There's a big world out there and even larger is your imagination and interpretation of it. Use it~

Who cares about popularity? Draw for you. Draw things you would never draw. Learn, get better.
I look up to a lot of you as artist, but I really feel like you are limiting yourselves. Maybe it's because you lack confidence in other areas, maybe it's because wolves and horses get comments while other critters and objects don't. Whatever your reasoning, I want to see more variety. When that happens, I shall respect you even more as an artist.

I yearn for the day no canines, equines, or felines make it to the featured. :3 It's up to you guys to make that change.

People draw what they love, and for me that happens to be wolves.

Yet you draw a picture of a wolf. Way to be slightly hipocritical.

But you're a wonderful artist, and yes, you do have a point.

My point. You missed it. XD
I don't draw wolves that often, so I expanded my horizons to draw something in a way I never have done before.
But thank you nonetheless. I wasn't trying to be terribly antagonizing, but rather get a point across.

@Cougar: That's fine~ Don't let me tell you what to do. Though, looking through your gallery, I do think some of your non-canine work has a lot more feeling put into it and are stronger pieces. Either way, draw what you like, but don't limit yourself. ^^

Eh, I'm justa s bad. All I ever draw is dragons. >.> I can and do draw other stuff I just like dragon more. I've drawn other animals; cats, canines, horse once or twice, random things. 'Course my gallery doesn't have much beucase I just started drawing in the oekaki. I agree with you, wolves are getting tiring but there isn't much we can do about it. People will draw what they want. I've only been drawing dragon so much 'cuase I wanted to get better at doing them on the computer and my poor cat-dog-bird-horse drawing skills probably need more practice on paper before I go showing the world how bad I am at drawing them.

You have a nice, mixed gallery. Should I start complaining you about only dragon animals with 4 legs? (kidding, kidding, don't bite my head off please)

@noleah: Knowing the issue is the first step to winning the battle. :P
It's probably just me making a fuss over nothing, but it does make me very happy whenever I see a variety in the boards and galleries.
Practice is a good way to get better, but don't forget to take breaks, else you end up making repeated mistakes without taking a step back from it. :3

Honestly, I think it's better to post things that you know aren't very good with the intention of getting as much feedback and critique as possible. I imagine other people will point out some things you never thought of and will help out a lot. (General you, not you. :P )

Thank you, though I, too, feel like I'm limiting myself to forest creatures and the like. ^^; This was as much for me as it was everyone else, to be honest. Sometimes it's easier to make a point to yourself when you tell everyone, though.
(Ducks don't have four legs. >.> )

And, also a bit off topic, but your dragons are really adorable. :D
Thank you very much for your input and opinion. <3

@Klaora: Yea, I probably should post them either way especially since no one I know can draw and therefor are very unhelpful in telling me how to fix them. I just find that most of my drawing are halfway between really bad and awesome. So I don't get many comments. It seems that everyone who is really bad says they are bad and then people tell them they are good and they get comments. And the people that are really good get millions of comments for obvious reasons. I'll try, but I'm afarid I probably won't get much feed back. >.>

And yes I know ducks have 2 feet (unless it was mutated and hiding the extra feet underwater). It was just the rest of your gallery. Not everyone you look at is going to have only wolves, they probably have one or two random things too. And thanks about the dragons, I like how you can draw a cartoon-style with the bold lines, I can't pull that off nearly and well. Or is it good? Eh, I was need good at grammer. I like your dragon too. So far I have been unable to do scales and make it look good.

They aren't telling you what to draw. Where in there does it say 'You have to stop drawing what you like' or 'Only draw birds'. It doesn't say that anywhere, they are only suggesting you draw other things.
