*pants* Finally finished... I kind of overdid it, but I like how it turned out. XD
Username: Muddie
Name of Fate Hound: Frosted Mint (Mint)
History: "Just try to get some sleep, pup," Frosted Mint's mother, Rushing Starlight, murmured. She rasped her tongue over her smallest pup's pelt, trying to warm it. Sparkling Raindrop, Mint's sister, had already fallen asleep, breathing heavy. Mint was having a hard time falling asleep, though. She knew this was no way for her family to live.
Right now she was cramped inside the trunk of a tree. She, Starlight, and Raindrop had squeezed through the roots of a giant oak to find a temporary den for the night. Life was very hard for the family. They were constantly traveling, trying to find a place to call their own. Other wolves owning huge stretches of territory made that job difficult. Hunting was hard, and the family didn't get much to eat. Almost everything Starlight caught she sacrificed for her pups, thus making the mother very weak.
Mint was very troubled. She hated the way she, her mother, and her sister had to live. She whimpered, squeezing her eyelids shut, willing herself to fall asleep. Mint heard Starlight sigh, and her mother caressed the pup with her long, flowing tail.
Eventually Mint was beginning to slip into unconsciousness. Straight thoughts were slipping from her mind. Suddenly, she felt her mother's body tense. Starlight's ears shot straight up, and her body shook a little.
Mint's eyes fluttered open. "Are you okay, Mo-"
"Hush," Starlight whispered urgently.
Mint obediently shut her mouth, but she looked around worriedly with wide eyes.
Soon, Mint became aware of sounds outside, eager rustling of the undergrowth. Her mother pushed the pup away and flattened heself to the ground, staring out of the gaps of the roots.
Mint couldn't control herself. "Mom, what are you doing? Are-"
Suddenly, a deafening banging noise split the air, accomponied by a human shriek. Starlight yelped as a sharp metal-like object came shooting through the trunk. She dodged out of the way, dragging Raindrop and Mint with her.
Raindrop wailed as she was shaken awake. "Why did you wake me up?" she cried. "What's going on?"
"Both of you, get outside now!" Starlight growled. She shoved the pups in front of her, squeezing out of the trunk with them.
Outside, there were five vicious-looking humans holding huge dangerous-looking tools in their hands. Mint and Raindrop gasped in unison. They had only seen a human once in their lives before, and Starlight had assured her pups humans meant nothing but trouble.
The giant creatures screamed with glee and raised their weapons.
"Both of you, run now!" Starlight screeched urgently.
Raindrop and Mint exchanged terrified glances.
"But Mom, we can't leave you!" Mint cried.
"Yeah!" Raindrop wailed, flicking her tail in restlessness.
"Go!" Starlight howled at the top of her lungs, but it was too late. One of the humans flipped a switch on its object, and a smaller object came shooting out and shot Raindrop right in the neck. Blood gushed out of Mint's sister's neck, and Raindrop let out a desperate wail of pain and fell to the ground, twitching.
"No! My pup!" Starlight howled, anguish filling her voice.
Raindrop choked, spitting out blood.
"What's happening?" Mint barked with horror.
Starlight didn't respond. Raindrop coughed and her eyelids fluttered shut.
Mint gasped. "Is she dead?"
"Run!" Starlight screamed. "Save yourself! Don't make the same mistake as her! I will not lose another pup!" With a livid snarl, she threw herself at the human who had killed Raindrop.
Starlight's claws sank into the human's chest, and she growled with fury. The human had its fatal weapon, though, and it whacked Starlight in the head with it. Starlight, dazed, swung around and blinked. The human had its hand on the same switch again.
"Go!" Starlight yowled to Mint. Mint turned tail, sobbing, and began to speed off. She heard the deathly banging sound again, but she didn't turn back.
Mint plunged into the thick foliage. Dark leaves surrounded her and blanketed her in the night. Sharp brambles poked her in the side, but she ignored them and kept running. All she could think of was her sister's bloody body, lying lifeless on the ground, and her mother jumping at the killer. She replayed the banging sound she'd heard once she'd truned around over and over again in her head.
Mint ran for hours, until the sky was beginning to grow gray. The predawn sky shed some light over the forest. Mint was too tired to go on. She stumbled to the ground and fell into sleep.
Mint awoke in a beautiful meadow, which was speckled with colorful flowers. That wasn't the best part of it, though. On the other side of the field, swiftly approaching her, was Starlight and Raindrop.
Energized, Mint ran towards them, and they all met in the middle.
"Mom! Raindrop!" Mint cried.
Starlight and Raindrop smiled, flicking their tails. Mint noticed there was not a single scratch on them from the fight that had just happened hours ago. Her mother and sister had lighter figures, and her mother looked younger than usual.
"Hello, my pup," Starlight sighed with happiness, licking Mint's head. "I'm so glad I could see you again."
Mint looked up at Starlight, eyes wide. "What is this place? What happened to you?"
"Raindrop and I both died at the hands of humans," Starlight whispered fiercely, "but I'm glad at least you were saved. This is the place where dead hounds go to live. We will only see you in dreams from now on."
Mint stared at her in sadness. "But I'll miss you! How am I supposed to live on my own?"
"You will not be left without something to brighten your life," Starlight whispered gently.
"What do you mean?" Mint inquired.
Starlight sighed and looked around the field. She walked a few feet away and picked a bright red tulip up out of the ground. Carrying the stem in her mouth, she took the flower back over to Mint and dropped it at the pup's feet.
"Take this flower," Starlight instructed.
Mint stepped forward, looking at her mother in confusion, and picked up the flower in her mouth the same way Starlight had.
"Mint, I give you a very special ability," Starlight announced. "You will have the power to control the plants around you, and you will grow flowers wherever you walk."
Mint was very curious. "Mom, I don't understand this."
"It's okay. You will be fine," Starlight promised. "Goodbye, Mint."
With that, Mint woke up, laying in a patch of weeds. She turned around, wimpering. She saw a puddle of water right next to her, and she rolled over to it to get a drink. As she bent down, she saw her reflection and gasped.
No longer was her pelt just a soft green and white, as it had been before. Now there were red dots patterned in her fur, adding a splash of color. Taking a closer look, Mint realized something. The red spots were the exact same color as the flower Starlight had given her.
Shocked, Mint stood up and backed away. Where she had walked, green stems suddenly shot up, ending with a beautiful flower at the top. Mint gasped. She turned around and walked swiftly through the forest a few pawsteps, then looked behind her. She had left a trail of flowers, in all shapes and colors.
For a moment, Mint stood still, blinking, and then she smiled and laughed. She liked this new ability! She jumped and ran in circles, creating messy patterns of flowers.
Frosted Mint didn't know how her life would be. She knew it would be hard without her mother and sister. And yet...
The sun was beginning to rise over the forest, and Mint barked and ran in delight. Flowers shot up all around her. Maybe there really would be one bright spot in her life.
