This is my entry for indi626. I hope you like! But before that, I wanted to write a short story about him.
I-...Is this life?
I guess it's my life. And all those who dwell here. Only as we know it though. To the outside realm we're no more than a fairy tale. Only a whisp of imaginary life with no real meaning. But I want to feel meaning. But what could a piteous messenger do?
Warm crisp winds blew past my face. The Summer blew in rapidly as spring faded away. Summer heat crippled the flowers, hunching them over with drought. I just stood there and watched the world unfold around me. Endless valleys streched out forever with dark green grasses of many species.
This wouldn't last though.
I don't belong to this world. If I was caught, Themus would have more than just something to say about that. I swallowed and lift my legs effortlessly along through the grass. A scroll strapped to my neck swung side to side as I looked around for the cottage.
"Leave it on the doorstep and come straight back."He told me as he patted my jaw, "Don't linger there." I recalled the words so clearly for some reason. I suppose it's because it's exactly what I didn't want to remember. I would give anything to just run away and forget those words hanging on my life. Just to be normal...
No, I should be happy. I was abandoned as a foal; just laying there, starving. Then Themus came. He huddled my weak frame to his chest and petted my ears. He said "You'll do great things.", or something like that. Then again I'm sure any horse would kill to be an angel's messenger. But what they don't realize is that if they don't like it, they can't turn back. You just feel obliged to keep working. After all, you don't want to dissapoint an angel.
A small shabby cottage caught my eye and distracted my train of thought. The grass and ivy climbing up the wall hid it. In the back layed a homemade fence made from tall sticks and tied together with wire. I stopped dead. The world grew so quiet I could hear the crisp tone of the fire at my feet. So quiet, I could hear my ears prick up, and my jaw open.
An Ivory beauty stood tall behind the fence eating a mouthful of grass. Oh, she even made eating look beautiful.
I shook my head violently. No, I just have to drop this off and leave. I can't be distracted by this mare. I began walking again towards the doorstep, my foot fall being silent as humanly possible.
But one more look can't hurt.
No! Gosh dang it advert your eyes! My feet stomped wildly for a minute then I stopped again. Out of the corner of my eyes I saw the mares eyes prick up.
I stood dead still for a moment, my front feet in mid stomp. My breathing shallowed as I tried to hold my breath. Her ears went back down and I breathed out. Quietly I walked to the doorstep and leaned my head down, letting the script slide off my neck and onto the stone. It made a small thud as it landed and I checked again to make sure the mare didn't hear it. She just kept eating grass as usual.
Silently I turned around and walked away. warm wind still buffeting my mane as I looked for the way I came. I barely took five step when my heart stopped. Behind me came the sweetest voice. "Oh hello. Who might you be?" I stopped dead and didn't turn around. As much as i wanted to talk to her, I couldn't. I broke into a sprint and dashed away. I heard her call behind me. "Hey! Please wait! Where are you going?" she pleaded. But I just kept running.
Themus will be so mad.
